Dear all,

Want to ask you about Thai visa conversion. My wife is joining me as dependent, so she got visa type O, and stay-permit 2 years. Now she is about to get a local job. Do we need to cancel current visa, and apply a work permit, or can convert current stay permit type O to work permit type B... Anyone knowing this, kindly advise. Just for us not go waste time making a new one. Thanks a lot.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on whether their wife can convert her Non-O visa (issued as a dependent) into a Non-B work visa now that she plans to work in Thailand. They are unsure if she needs to cancel her current visa to apply for a work permit or if a conversion is possible.

You might be staying on extension from Non-immigrant B visa and having Work Permit. Then your wife is staying on extension from Non_Immigrant O (dependent/spouse of foreigner who is working legally in Thailand) and she cannot have work permit.

Still there might be a slim chance to be able if your employer and her new employer work together on her visa/extension well and accordingly though I don't think she can change Non-O to Non-B inside country. But maybe some experts here like

or
@Rob***
would be able to confirm..

Once she get her visa/extension of Non-B with help of her new employer, then she can hold her own work permit.

You are confusing with two total different things. To Stay inside Thailand you need a Visa. To work inside of Thailand you also need a work permit. The company applies for the work permit for het at the MInistry of Labor.

Her current stay she got from Immigration Office can not be changed into a booklet from Minsitry of Labor. Two total different Ministries, you can not exchange papers from one to the other. But I try to understand what you like to do. Ask her soon to be employer and your wife to visit the Ministry of Labor to start the proces for application of the Work Permit, they will check her passport and let you know if they allow her stay inside Thailand to apply for a Work Permit or that she has to get a new Non Immigrant B visa.

Thank Robert. Her case is here:

- I’m working in Thailand with work permit

- She is staying here as dependent, with multiple entry stay permit. No work permit.

Can she convert current stay permit to work permit, without traveling out to apply from outside.
