Can I change my wife's visa from exemption to a Non-O visa while in Thailand?

Hi everyone,

My wife is currently with me in Thailand with a visa exemption stamp. I received today my 1 year non-immigrant B visa (work permit), now we would like to change hers to a depend visa (non-immigrant O visa).

Can this be done inside the country? Or does she need to apply outside the country & re-enter on the new visa?

Anyone did this recently?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on whether their wife can change her visa status from a visa exemption stamp to a Non-Immigrant O visa (dependant visa) while still in Thailand, especially after the user's recent approval of a Non-Immigrant B visa for work. Comments suggest that they should confirm with the employer about the dependent status and consider applying for the Non-O visa from outside Thailand for potentially easier processing.

Did you get your initial 3 month Non B in country or overseas? My guess is that it’ll be way easier for her to apply for a non O overseas (less onerous on paperwork needed) and then when she has that apply for an extension to match yours.

ok clear, then a trip to KL would be easiest! FYI, I got my initial 3 months in belgium, which has now been transferred to the 1 year one.

Be aware that KL use an appointment system to both apply for the visa and collect your passport. Print out their checklist and tick off each item as you get it. You won’t get in the door without it.

ah ok. I’m not an expert on non B stuff but from what I see on this and other forums is that it’s usual to get the Non O at a nearby consulate. It may well be possible to do in country but I am not sure.

Will your employer accept her as a dependent on your visa, check with them as you will need this.
