TLDR : Answer Summary
An American citizen arriving in Thailand without a visa will receive a visa exemption allowing a stay of only 30 days. This can be extended for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office for a fee of 1,900 baht. There is no option to directly request a 45-day stay upon arrival, and it's advisable for the husband to apply for a 60-day tourist visa before traveling to Thailand if a longer stay is desired.

Have a look for the EVisa 90 days visiting family. I got mine online in 3 days. A little bit of data required, I used one of my wife's relatives as a reference, a scanned copy of a bank statement, and pay by Visa. Very easy to do

Ricky ********
No

He can definitely ask, but unfortunately he will only be given a 30 day visa exempt stamp upon arriving, which he can extend for another 30 days at the local immigration office where he will be staying for 1,900 baht.

You can always ask. But the answer will be no.

It's also not a very smart question.

you can always ASK for what you want .

can even ask for the sun to shine earlier .

The last thing you want to do is have a conversation with Immigration. Just my opinion. 😅

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

thaievisa.go.th

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

30 days. Ask no need, local immigration can extend 30 days. Government fee 1900 baht.

If go agency 3500-5000 to make it easy.

Or border run +- 3000 for another 30 days.

If you are legally married (and you can prove it):

30 days visa exempt

30 days tourist extension 1900b

Plus and extra

60 days Visit Thai family extension 1900b

Total 4 months.

You’ve been advised to get a tourist visa for a 45 days stay, but he’s also entitled to a 30 days visa exemption and 30 days extension as explained. Just as you are aware of this formal requirement regarding 30 days visa exemption. (*Thai embassy London)

I have traveled to Thailand six times since
*****
, I have never been asked to show proof of planned travel at port of entry, in my case BKK.

@Robert ********
And I’ve traveled 22 times since
*****
and never been asked either. It’s rarely checked at the immigration but you can risk your airline will ask for it as they can be fined and responsible for your return if formal requirements aren’t fulfilled. When people ask about visa exemption I feel it’s correct to also mention the formal requirements as we know people from time to time are denied check in and even de-boarded on a three legged flight regarding this.

I’ve never traveled here with a one way ticket. If I had a Non O visa in hand I would. On this trip my return flight was booked as far out as it could, 10 months out. I’ll move back again as needed.

@Robert ********
Ok, but this formal requirement is regarding visa exemption and an onward ticket beyond the initial 30 days.

No. If a US Citizen arrives without a visa they are stamped in for 30 days. Period end of story. They can do nothing else at the airport. There is not an immigration office at the airport. If they want more time they either arrive with a visa, or they go to their immigration office and apply for and pay for a 30 day extension. They can only apply one time for this extension.
