Is getting a visa the only way for a US passport holder to stay in Thailand longer than 30 consecutive days? I could have sworn that I read somewhere last year that Thailand had extended the maximum stay beyond 30 days.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, a US passport holder can stay longer than 30 consecutive days in Thailand through Visa Exempt Entry which allows a 45-day stamp. From October 1, 2022, until March 31, 2023, travelers are eligible for this entry, plus an additional 30-day extension for 1900 Thai Baht at a local immigration office, totaling up to 75 days. Moreover, border runs to neighboring SE Asian countries are permitted, allowing for multiple entries within the year.

Land BORDERS are open and border run to neighbor SE Asia country is possible. (Except Myanmar is CLOSED to foreigners.). Upon arrival into Thailand you will be stamped in for 45 days plus one 30 day extension of stay...

That can be done Max of 2 times per calendar year.

Can you do 2 land border crossing and the 3 air crossing? Or do they not stack?

no. I am over 50 years old though. So I know I can get a retirement visa also. They just seem like a lot more work than some of the other visas.

So a total of 75 days. With a maximum two times per year? I guess it probably doesn’t matter that much, since it looks like you can only do this for the next six months.

get the METV multiple entry tourist visa...with planning it will get you up to 9 months stay in Thailand.

50 minutes for them to publish this in the Gazette 😅 there's usually international arrivals shortly after midnight, or might be some people walking very slowly to airport immigration right now hoping for that 45

From October 1 2022 thru March 31 2023, you are eligible for the Visa Exempt Entry into Thailand . Gives you 45 days stamp plus one added 30 day extension of stay for 1900 Thai baht at local Thai immigration office = 75 days stay in Thailand
