TLDR : Answer Summary
An American citizen can stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa if entering via land or air. This can be extended for an additional 30 days at immigration. Alternatively, applying for an eVisa before traveling allows for a 60-day stay without needing an extension. It is advised to secure proof of onward travel when entering without a visa, as airlines may require this for boarding.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

Visit the visapages on the website of the Thai Embassy in your country, for further information.

BE AWARE: there could be additional costs when he wants to fly to Thailand without a visa. The airline could refuse boarding if he does not have a proof of onward travel out of Thailand within the 30 days he will get stamped in. If you have a 60-days tourist visa, the airline normally doesn't want to see a proof

Look on the website or the embassy website.

An extension in Thailand costs 1900 baht and you'll spend 4-6 hours traveling to the office and applying.

The visa costs less than this.

If he applies for a tourist visa online through the evisa system he can get 60 days when he arrives.

If he doesn't apply for the visa he'll get 30 days and can apply for a 30 day extension at immigration.

It's faster, cheaper and much easier to just get the visa before coming.
