TLDR : Answer Summary
You can enter Thailand as a U.S. citizen under the 30-day visa exemption. It is possible to extend your stay for an additional 30 days at any immigration office within Thailand. If you're visiting Thai family, you might also qualify for a further 60-day extension. It is advised to apply for a ThailandPass as well for entry.

The evisa from California’s embassy gave me a 60 day tourist visa after a three day wait. you can extend to 90 days once in Thailand

As a US citizen you can enter visa exempt. You can get a 30 day extension off that too. You could also look at getting a further 60 days based on visiting Thai family too. You will both need to apply for a ThailandPass.
