That was in Ubon and they were checking every Farang living in the area. Mainly to make sure that you are living at your stated address.

I just did a 60 days extension and an immigration officer showed up within two weeks. Took a picture of my wife and me while holding up my passport and that was it.

In my case they requested a witness to be present (work colleague of my wife), not a neighbor. In any case the retirement option is less hassle, I guess.
