How does immigration verify marriage for visa extensions in Thailand?

Food for thought, perhaps!

I could have got an extension based on marriage but I opted for retirement.

I know with the marriage one, Immigration can visit and talk to the neighbours!

Now I have lived in my current place for 6 months,

I have never seen my neighbours and to my knowledge, they have never seen me!

How would that work with Immigration had I applied for an extension based on marriage?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the verification process involved when applying for a visa extension based on marriage in Thailand. Several users share their experiences, indicating that immigration may visit the applicant's residence and speak to neighbors or a local witness, although the extent of the visit can vary. Some opted for retirement visas instead, citing them as less troublesome. There are mixed experiences regarding immigration visits, with some reporting personal visits while others had minimal interaction.

I assume visits are dependent on your office as I got a personal visit from immigration 1 month after I got my initial non imm O based on being over 50, not a marriage one.

what about agencies fixing a 'retirement extension' for

baht ?

There must be something wrong with you if you've never seen your neighbours and they"ve never seen you

In my case they visited my house, while at the same time checking my neighbour's burmese maid. Simple 5 minutes, no problem, since then i have switched to retirement based on monthly pension as it is much easier.

In my case they requested a witness to be present (work colleague of my wife), not a neighbor. In any case the retirement option is less hassle, I guess.

I have Extension of Stay based on marriage for many years. Never had Immigration on visit, they sent local police. They filled out a report, had a chat, some pictures and off they went. They never talked to neighbors.

Believe me the neighbors have seen you. However, if O Visa for over age 50 (Retirement) works for you - keep doing it.

- I was only writing about how the Thai Immigration and Consular Services see it. They are only concerned about the applicant being over age 50.. The source of money could be Investment Dividends, a Trust Fund or most any source including a Pension.

I understand that.

But the job I did in the uk allowed me to retire at 50 and take a company pension

I never used my income as proof!

It was easier just to put the money in the bank

I hate paperwork

Darren Brogan - In the arena of Visas in Thailand the term 'Retirement' is more of a nickname and has no direct relationship to your pension or Western County Retirement Status. The several visas often referred to as 'Retirement' Visas are actually only referring to being age 50 or over. Whether you are on retirement status in your home country means nothing. Thus someone under age 50 will need to use another status that allows long stay in Thailand - if that is their goal.

I got married before I was 50

But I couldn’t finish my job and get my company pension before 50

Well.. the financial requisite is smaller with the marriage extension, but they do have to check somehow that it is not just a proforma marriage. Hence why they visit and all that. Its hard to be proforma over 50 years old ;)

Just a thought!!

maybe they make the marriage option harder..

More money in Thai banks is, perhaps, better for the country?

Yes. I get a retirement rather than a marriage because it is simpler. It was the same when I applied for a house book. I had to get papers signed by the village head man and 2 others from the village who needed to swear on paper that I was "a good man". I laughed for about a week but I did buy my villager friends a beer or two as thanks, afterwards.

And yes the retirement extension was more simple

I have only ever heard my neighbours, I live in a condo, one of them never seems to leave and I think the other condo is short term rental

In my case, we lived in a rented house before, but were planning to move to my wife's house in her family's village after the marriage. The immigration did not care about the rented house, even though we lived there by the time of application for the extension, they wanted to come visit in the village where we would live after, I had only been there on visits before.

We served them lunch there and they wanted to see the village headman. He had to sign some papers. They took some photos of us in front of the house. Took about one hour in all, with no problems. They were nice and friendly the whole time.
