Perfectly normal. Got a similar experience at Suvarnabhumi even when entering with long term visa.

What are the steps for visa cancellation in Thailand after leaving a job?

This is a bit confusing for me, usually the WP will be cancelled on last working day at immigration. This voids your visa as well and you get a "grace stamp" of 6 to 20 days to travel out depending on the type of WP. There shouldn't be a need to cancel your visa actually as it depends on the WP.
