If its a bona fide course you should be entitled to one. Try asking your school if they can support you.

We have a lot of students on Ed visas. I assumed they were on much the same deal as Non-imm, but I bow to your superior knowledge,

You SHOULD be able to get it at the airport no problem,but do you need the aggravation of the chance that something goes wrong? Get it at immigration in advacne and next year stump up the 3,800 for a multiple entry visa and then you dont need a re-entry permit.
