TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to stay in Thailand for 60 days on a Visa Exempt Entry, extend for an additional 30 days, then travel to Vietnam for a week, returning to Thailand for an additional 60 days, hoping to extend again. Community comments reveal mixed experiences with this strategy, emphasizing the potential risks of being perceived as abusing the Visa Exempt Entry policy. Some advise applying for a suitable visa for longer stays and mention that the actions of Immigration Officers can vary, impacting entry decisions.
Click my name and see the post I made last night when we arrived. We are only trying to stay 90 days. It will probably work, if you don’t mind a lecture.

This year for Laos they have hardened their position, Thai immigration requires spending at least 2 days in Laos, 20,000 baht in cash, the plane ticket back to the country of origin within 2 months, they also ask for the reasons for returning to Thailand with the place where we are going to stay

Try LTR Visa if you have some little money? Otherwise screw around

Thailand sucks, everything is up to the immigration officer who faces, and judges you at that time. Rules mean nothing. There is no fucking consistency or across the board system laws in place. Just smile alot, act stupid and hand out with money. If they are not happy, offer more. Dress respectable and never get angry. Enjoy your stay !!! All true
that's why as always up to the discretion of the immigration officer

I can’t believe the comments I see on this site and it’s mainly dumb Americans who think that they are entitled. Try taking your girlfriend to your country 🤣 Every country has their rules and now that the Tai government is starting to clamp down on you cheaters, it’s, like come on nobody is going to tell me what to do. Get a life or go home to Daddy.
Vietnam is excellent You won’t have time to do a train ride from N to S or vice versa but quite enjoyed Saigon & Hoi Ann (did flight). Was my 1st choice in residing countries prior Thailand.

Thailand will soon lose its attraction soon Vietnam Laos and Malaysia will be a better option VERY SOON there was a major problem a few days ago in relation to visa free entry
immigration doesn’t scare aware ‘attraction’ as poor tourists & backpackers are of no concern.
Thailand ‘falling back’ was in jeopardy nearly 15 years ago with over commercialization but still going strong thanks to a growing expat & long stay foreign worker community. Believe all good now thats why believe the “exempt policy” can be done away with.
well I am not a person that will put up with any of the bullshit. My money each year is a significant boost to the economy but I will not be fucked around.
you can put 10 million baht into the economy this next year. They don’t care, they will still treat you as a second class citizen with more to spend. I got burnt so many times but pointless to argue, regardless how much you pay for services or products, “no refund”, “no exchange” & “no guarantee/ warranty”.
no, just saying the ‘normal’ won’t change. Same going on in adjacent countries, lao however being true to communism, run down businesses & everywhere excessively poor; Cambodia has fully adapted the US dollar so much more cost now; Vietnam also fully communist is riddled with crime & is a must to educate yourself the proper ‘Bribing’ (police, security, neighbors, new friends) way. However long stay is only per work permit.
Much more expensive (nice 1 BR apartment w/ kitchen - $2000 US) but Malaysia with a easy & long visa is best within the region if not Thailand.
I did that exact thing in 2023 and had no problems. A lot changed since then though. Best of luck mate

I am doing the same. Just extended my first 60 day last week and off to Phu Quoc for a week at the the end of this month . My flight back to the UK after I come back from phu Quoc is already booked and paid for. I will then return to Thailand to retire in December

People doing this is the reason the 60 visa exempt visa is at risk of going back to 30 days abusing the system just get correct visa for your travel plans

I can't agree,as Thailand is desperate for tourists, hence keeping it at 60 days. The figures have already declined recently, which Thailand can ill afford. Especially as tourism is their 5th biggest industry.

What visa do you suggest for a 180 day continuous stay in Thailand. I haven't seen 1 unless over 50 and wanting a retirement visa
. Absolute GARBAGE. The government are not worried about people doing 1 border run then leaving Thailand. It is the people doing it 4 times a year that they are concerned about.
This is not correct. Everything has become more strict now and people are getting questioned and even denied on their second attempt only after maximising one visa exemption.
They don't want people trying to live here long term on visa exempt/tourist entries.
If you maximize even one border run with a 60 day entry and 30 days extension, you've already spent 180 days in Thailand.
They are very likely to question you about being just a tourist at that point.
On the other hand you can enter many times a year without ever having any issues, if your travel history shows you are in Thailand for shorter periods. Not maximizing your stays and extending them.
It always depends on the Immigration Officer. There is no legal limit on the number of times that you can use the Visa Exempt Entry. However the Visa Exempt Entry is intended for tourists. Thai Immigration considers that 90 days is suitable for a vistor to stay in Thailand as a tourist. If you attempt to enter on a second Visa Exempt Entry, many Immigration officers consider that you are abusing the system and will take you aside for further questions. Depending on your answwers to these questions the officer will warn you that you will not be allowed to enter in future on the Visa Exempt or my deny you entry into Thailand. If you reseach these pages you will see that recently many have been denied entry for attempting to enter Thailand on their second Visa Exempt. If you want to stay in Thailand for more than 90 days, then to be safe, obtain a visa suited to the reason for your stay.
if I were you I would have applied for a six months multiple entries tourist visa (METV) through the Thai embassy in your area before I left. Then you’ve covered your whole stay with a visa and don’t risk to be questioned or denied your second entry.
This visa is valid for 180 days and gives you 60 days each time you enter Thailand which also can be extended with additional 30 days at your local immigration. So you’ll need one border bounce, but you have a way more safer basis for your stay which now is covered with a visa.
