Why was my spousal DTV visa application cancelled due to the issuing authority of my passport being incorrect?

My spousal DTV visa was denied:

Your visa application has been cancelled. Wrong country of passport

I'm pretty sure it's because it asks issuing authority and I wrote "United States Department of State" as is on my passport and all they wanted was "United States".

It's annoying because the forms make a big deal about everything matching your passport and double check that everything on your passport is in the form exactly without any mistakes.

Anyway, I didn't know about this group until looking up this problem so at least I know where to look for issues when I apply next time. Better luck next time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their experience of having their spousal DTV visa application denied, citing 'wrong country of passport' due to the way they reported the issuing authority on their form. They expressed frustration since they followed the instructions to match their passport exactly. Comments from other users provided insights, indicating that the issuing authority should be reported as 'United States' or as it appears on the passport without discrepancies. Many users reported differing outcomes despite similar submissions, highlighting inconsistencies in the visa application process.

"Issuing Authority" for a USA passport is in fact "United States Department of State". If you entered that for issuing authority, that is not why it was rejected.

It is correct, however thailand visa office considers it incorrect. So youre wrong

nothing to do with Thailand visa office. Where did this come from? By definition a DTV application is via the MFA at embassies outside Thailand.

except you're wrong and there's lots of other people who are pointing out the same issue. Every detail between my wife's application and mine were identical except my passport. Everything else was input properly. I'm looking at the application everything is correct. Some places allow the full United States Department of State, some will only allow United States.

I'm not saying that's what they should be doing, but there isn't a way to challenge it either.

This question is a trap.

Search 🔍 “place of issue” in this group and you’ll find many posts about it. You can also search specifically for posts about the embassy you applied from

My advice to everyone is put your passport country for place of issue.

No one has been cancelled doing this.

Unfortunately they tell you to write exactly what’s in your passport, but on many occasions people did this (for this place of issue field) and got cancelled. E.g. they put “Bangkok” which was where their European passport was issued from and was in their passport - and got cancelled

Anonymous participant 809 yeah, when searching I see that now but I just filled out the form based on what they told me to do. 😅 Even then it seems like for some people it's fine for other people it's not.

i put united state and got approved

they're not trying to make money

Cancelled and denied have different connotations. Cancelled means there was something amiss with the passport information. Don't rely on the automated reader, make sure everything is exactly as written in the passport and try again

@John *********
the issue is sometimes they don't actually want you to write what's in the passport, they want the country.

so are you saying you should put US department of State? I'm trying to fill it out right now. Also when they scan my passport it says 1933 for expiration date. Instead of 2033. I corrected it when you manually type it in but will it be rejected because it says 1933.
Jay *****
Anonymous participant 730 obviously the 1933 was the result of a guess from the scanner and needs to be corrected.
John **********
Anonymous participant 730 I obviously have no idea what it says on your passport. If you correct something that should be OK, double check everything just before submitting
Mercy *********
I don't know if that's why. I also put the same thing and was approved.

not sure, our forms are identical except this (will my whole passport country / info) and this error message seems to usually about this issue. What country did you apply in? I'm seeing that Vietnam is more strict about this issue
Alex *********
Anonymous participant I'm Italian so the authority in my passport is actually "the minister of the interior ". I questioned the embassy which told me to write EXACTLY as in the passport which I did and then got approved. I capitalized the word EXACTLY as they did in my mail, hope that helps

also Vietnam?

Anonymous participant I didn't apply in Vietnam. Perhaps you should mail them first and check with them?

I just was wondering where you applied, it seems like some consulates and embassies are more lenient than others. Canada seems great, there seems to even be a slight difference between Ho Chi Minh vs Hanoi.

Anonymous participant I applied in Hanoi. It would be a stupid reason because the country is still correct. The only difference is the extra info (dept of state). Other ppl I saw that had trouble it was because there country wasn't mentioned at all in their answer bc some other countries have their passport info set up a little different. Or in the case of Americans some may have put Dept of State only or got confused and put Bangkok embassy bc they had their passport renewed there.

thanks. She filled out both our forms so there shouldn't be many differences. I don't really mind if it is this and it's the problem, but I hate am extra payment for it. We will see, maybe I won't use Vietnam next time.
Anonymous ******************
So what are you supposed to put? United States department of State? US department of State?

Anonymous participant 730 United States of America

Anonymous participant 730 I'm not sure, maybe it was another reason other people said they didn't have a problem. All my information looks correct to me

That is bizarre - I put "United States Department of State" and was approved.

Sorry that you had that issue
