What should my girlfriend list as the 'place of issue' on her visa application for a Chinese passport issued in Bangkok?

Hey all, thanks in advance for the help:

"Place of Issue", when entering the passport details.

My GF has a Chinese passport, that she had issued in Bangkok when she got it renewed. So on the DTV application, she put "Bangkok" for place of issue. It states this on her passport.

She just got her application cancelled after waiting 12 days:

**

"Your visa application has been cancelled. Applicant’s passport holder and nationality provided is incorrect with passport biodata page."

**Should she just put China? Anyone have experience with this detail? I can't imagine any other entry on that page could be incorrect to cause this problem.

The cancellation didn't give any detailed explanation or a way to correct the problem, frustrating. Any help would be appreciated as we want to reapply asap.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The issue arises from the requirement to enter the correct "Place of Issue" on a visa application. Given that the girlfriend's Chinese passport was renewed in Bangkok, she initially listed Bangkok as the Place of Issue. However, many users suggest that she should state China instead, as the issuing authority of her passport remains the Chinese government. This consistency can help avoid rejection of the application, as applicants have reported issues when they mistakenly state the physical location of their passport issuance instead of their nationality or country of origin.

passports issuing authority is always in the native country. not the embassy

Send an email to the consulate/ embassy with copy of your rejected application and ask a screenshot to understand what's wrong exactly

I had my German passport issued in Hongkong. So far when asked about this in various forms I always put in Germany as place of issue and never had a problem. So I'm guessing she should have China in.

The embassy is considered sovereign soil in a foreign country. ie the Chinese embassy in Thailand is part of China, not Thailand.
Luit *****************
@Christie ******
that is absolutely not true, just look at the Geneva convention and you will see embassies are protected, but not considered as soil of the country they represent.

Even if you apply for a new passport through an embassy, the passport is actually issued by the country you are originally from. It should explicitly say in your passport.

A lot of embassy's will send back the passport to the country to be processed by their respect Foreign Affairs. Thai passport holders who renew their passports in London have to wait for passport to be sent to BKK and back again .

While not DTV, when I would apply online for a regular tourist visa, I wrote the place of issue of my passport to be the country (Brazil), not where it was issued (Chile).

however as others stated, I don't think this is the error. In the form you have to state your nationality, and it's possible you/she selected the wrong country, and it doesn't match the actual passport, so "nationality _provided_" is incorrect with passport page.

I think you can login to the website and retrieve your application details to confirm.

I was denied a couple of times (on tourist visa) for putting an extra digit on my passport number.

As others said, it's in Bangkok but it's renewed at the Embassy of China, so she renewed it on Chinese soil. Unfortunately you have to start the process again and pay again

Yeah it's a bit of a tricky question. They should put a note on that page to explain the acceptable location.

I always assumed this is asking for the Issuing Authority so Embassy of P.R.China in Thailand

Yes, it has been mentioned multiple times on here. You need to put your country.

The passport was issued in Thailand. But the issuing country was China.

I mean, how a Canadian passport be issued by a country other than Canada? So why ask the question?
Elías ********
I think she was rejected not by writing Bangkok as place of issue, but because she might have chosen Thailand as issuing country (there are two different questions).

My Costa Rica passport was issued at Seoul, Korea.

At place of issue I wrote Seoul, but at issuing country I wrote Costa Rica, and had no issues getting my DTV (online application also).

I've read here about other Chinese citizens choosing Thailand as issuing country and then getting rejected.

It should be place of issue Bangkok, issuing country China (always your own country).

@Elías *******
That is 💯 correct. Perfectly said.

all there is is "place of issue" on the online application and she put "Bangkok"

There wasn't 2 questions here on this alp (though most websites ask this for flight tickets etc)

Don't have a screenshot right now though.

Does anybody has a screenshot of the application website handy? I'm pretty sure there are two things to fill in 1) Place of issue and 2)Issue country (don't remember the exact wording).

I had mine cancelled also. It stated my surname was spelled wrong, but it wasn't. No way to appeal or anything, very frustrating.

I renewed my passport in Shanghai a few years back and on my application I wrote France as the place of issue. Cause technically consulates/embassies are part of their own countries. So she should re-apply and write China.

@Kevin ******
They represent there country, but they are not their country.
Rogerio ******
@Luit ****************
embassies are considered to be the country they represent. Regular police does not have jurisdiction inside embassy grounds.
Luit *****************
@Rogerio *****
The fact that local police is not allowed to enter an embassy does not make it another country.

Just check Geneva convention and you wil see.

"No, embassies are not sovereign territory, but they do have special protections and privileges. They are located on foreign soil and are subject to the host country's laws, but they are exempt from most local laws"

I suppose you are right.
