Why is the Thai Baht strengthening against the GBP and how can I optimize my currency exchange for a visit to Thailand?

Been waiting for the GBP to improve against the Thai Baht,not happening it continues to spiral downwards.

So I've bit the bullet and transferred at 43.1+for my upcoming visit in two weeks.

Should have done it weeks ago at 47+, hindsight is a great thing.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation revolves around the recent strengthening of the Thai Baht against the British Pound (GBP) and other currencies, resulting in frustration for expats and tourists who are witnessing a decline in their purchasing power. Many users express regret over not exchanging currency sooner, as rates have fallen significantly since the summer. Factors discussed include the strong position of the Baht in relation to other currencies, potential government interventions due to impacts on exports, and advice on when and how to exchange money for better rates. Participants also share their personal experiences and observations in navigating currency exchanges and the implications of the current economic situation.

Yes it seems once they sorted a permanent and favourable government the baht strengthened, but look at the £ against Euro and dollar, the £ is strong, just the baht is stronger.

Its never a biggy when its just holiday spends, try working on £100k transfer, that 1bt movement wipes £2,000 off your savings 😱 - that shit hurts.

But then you didn't hear me complaining when i brought £100k into the country in
******
at 70bt average, then taking it all out again in 2016 at 50bt average 🤣🤣🙊

Goes down pretty much every year between September and October, probably a bad time to buy currency. Yeah, no conspiracy, world's not coming to an end, the republicans and the democrats didn't do it

The Baht is getting stronger. I do not know the cause and do not like that. Went to the bank this morning and this month's deposit is 7,000 baht less than last month's.

Freaking baht is killing me.

What I consider is that my money is better off in Australia because interest rates are still well over 4%. I might not get the best exchange rate on the baht right now, but I couldn't earn 4%+ in Thai banks.

either that or the Thai Bhat increased in value you need to triangulate it against a basket of currencies Europ is poorly governed The US presidential election and the war in Ukraine all impacting. Depends on what side of the fence you are . Same goes for the cost of fuel. Europe/UK can expect further decline in value what is so special about the pound. UK no longer the financial dynamo it was
Ken *****
It was 73 , when I was over, in 2004.

Ten years later, down to high forties.

It won’t go through the roof. It’s our currency that is so weak.

Nothing to do with the thai system.

Which is separated from household, and buisness.

Different system .

I remember that time well - a sign that there was trouble was that the Thai banks were holding onto payments made from other countries and taking much longer than usual to release any incoming funds!

Yep. When I got here 2 months ago the $100 USD exchanged at over $3650. When I got $100 in Baht yesterday it was $3220, and that was at SuperRich. That almost $15 per $100! It’s making me rethink the Retirement Visa for now…imagine transferring 800,000 Baht now and getting your a$$ kicked on that exchange, only for the USD to rebound when you eventually withdraw it. So you get hit both ways. 🤬

P.S. That $15 per $100 doesn’t even take in to account getting money out of an ATM here. Then add another almost $7 for the ATM fee plus whatever your bank charges, which is ANOTHER 1-2%! Altogether around a 25% decline!! So aggravating.

And yes, I know about Wise, Revolut, Fidelity and Charles Schwab…I was just using simple scenarios.
Ricky ******
It was 38 in 2018. I always think 43 is fine, any higher is a bonus.
Susan ****
Unless you are buying a property or making a big purchase £10,000 or more, the exchange rate is an irrelevance because Thailand is cheap anyway.

I always convert money when the exchange rates are good. I converted a few thousand at 46.58. I'm quids in, in theory.

But on the amount I spend in Thailand it's not much.

Oh and for you lot complaining about Brexit, sterling is heading for $1.45, €1.30 within a year and is already super strong against currencies as diverse as the Aussie$, Mexican Peso and Norwegian Krone.

Nothing to do with Brexit. Simply to do with base rates in each country and their future prospects.

Thailand is currently a WEF/BIS/UN testbed. Once the white-elephant of all white-elephants (Thailand’s digital currency 10,000bt giveaway) repercussions start coming home to roost and Thailand finds it didn't increase GDP or GNP from throwing lubricant on an already amply lubricated economic engine, but only naively (or knowingly) created a massive financial deficit which will require squeezing every drop of direct and indirect tax from both domestic and foreign investors, entrepreneurs and innovators, the KEE will really hit the electric LOM. Too late to take steps to recover. Then the money men (be they Chinese, Caucasian or Middle Eastern WEF puppets) will step in and dictate/dominate Thailand's governing even more than they've done thus far through bribery, blackmail and corruption. Swings and roundabouts. Thailand's doing what Ireland did for the EU filthy lucre and will crash and burn as surely as Ireland is doing. Mark my words.
Steve **********
Read the article, yes needs to be up at 37+ ish.

I recall when I moved here it was about 45 / USD

But a year or so ago was 28 ?
Steve **********
Was at bkk bank this morning, board was 31.73, didn't look if buy or sell.
Tony *********
It's killing everyone in UK, USA and Europe at the moment.

I have read many articles about it. It started falling sharply end of July mostly on market talk. Eventually got a lot worse because the Fed reduced interest rates by a full half of 1%.

What makes me laugh is investors are apparently buying the baht and investing in Thai stocks when the BoT rate is still only at 2.5% half of the UK and US.

None of it makes any sense at all especially when Thailand is supposed to be full of household debt.

It's surely heading for a crash at some point especially as its making Thai exports less competitive than with their Asian neighbours.

Hopefully it will bottom out soon and start falling again 🙏🏼
David ***********
It wont improve for a while as its only just lost 3.5thb in the last 2 months annoyingly. The cheapest way i found was to take pounds with me and exchange at one of the booths in the larger shopping centres. It saves around 6% on using ATMS with uk card

@Todd ********
Super Rich today is offering 43.5 to GBP and wise is offering 43.1 after fees. I understand that wise is the most convenient if you have a Thai bank account but occasionally cash is King. The problem is I don’t think I’m allowed to bring 500k into Thailand in cash. Change it at a kiosk and then put it in the bank 😂😂😂
Todd *********

Lester *********
@Tony ********
I’m moving to Thailand this month. I take it you transfer in using wise and then withdraw cash from your Thai bank account? Is there a limit to the amount of cash you can pay in directly to the account. It’s just that Super Rich is offering 43.5 on. GBP against wise of 43.1 after fees. That’s based on rates at the time I’m posting.
Tony *********
@Lester ********
- welcome to Thailand 🇹🇭

Where are you moving to?

With regards to the receiving banks it's best to check out their websites. Most transfer monthly amounts but I did have to transfer the 800k but I think I may have done it over a few transactions I can't remember. If I doubt check the bank you are transferring to. I assume you have an account in Thailand? If not it's a real work up. Luckily I now have 2 one with Bangkok Bank and one with SCB.

I transfer from £ to Thai baht using Wise and then move that to my Bangkok Bank account. Once it's there it's easiest to either pay in cash or 'scan'...this is where the vendor produces their scan bar or QR code and you simply use the apps scan feature. I would say I probably do
*****
but anything larger it's always scan.

The Thais are very clued up in modern technology and especially payment systems they do way more than I do... I just keep it simple. It did take a short time to get used to what I was having to do because in the UK it was all with the plastic but here it's all about your phone 555.

I am not familiar with Super Rich is it an app? Yes Wise have steadily been increasing fees for a while so I'm on the lookout for a cheaper alternative.

One thing to note which is very important. Wise transfers show up as International and it's very important for the visa renewal if you are doing it bases on 65k per month or 40k per month if married to a Thai.

Oh I forgot to mention when withdrawing cash always use the apps cardless feature to avoid charges in you are out of the district that you opened your bank at. There are some weird things banks do here and that's one of them 🙄
Chris *********************
Don't use exchange booths in the upper floors ,rip off,
Lester *********
@Tony ********
Any of the exchange kiosks give better rates than the UK. I believe there is one in Suvarnabhumi is the green super rich, is showing 43.05 TT exchange is giving 43.6 in UK and 32.60 in Dollars.
Tony *********
@Lester ********
- maybe but most expats use a company like Wise that give the true market rate. It's not normally bettered.
Lester *********
@Tony ********
. Wise does have built in fees but they are small. I use both. Certain places in Thailand cash is still King

a simple google and Airbnb search will show you what you need to know about the demand there is and why short term rental prices are so high, (big) demand and (little) supply, I know it’s sad that you don’t know that fundamental concept used in business. Harry *********
@Tai *********
this is my last post . I agree with you , real estate ( a horrible American way to describe property investment but so be it ) IS a fantastic investment . If in a safe country without the massive huge oversupply we see in Thailand . I myself have many in Europe , I agree with you fantastic returns but not in Thailand .

I appreciate you are a builder and so need to pump up the market to find buyers . Like I said .. good luck . And believe me I’m neither poor nor just surviving on my pension . I have a great lifestyle funded by property abroad and never ever in oversupplied Thailand

I don’t care about Thailand, like I said Bangkok is a terrible investment which you are mostly referring to. Koh phangan on the other hand is 40% national park and almost unique in the gulf islands. what relevance has that got or not got to the fact that , long term , the GBP is very weak against the US dollar , the Swiss franc , the euro and the Thai Baht just to quote 4 ?

Historically apart from a brief period around

and since the currency destroying event of Brexit , the pound has never been weaker than it is now . Since the depths of 2019 and sept 2022 it has dragged itself off the floor and gone up a tiny bit and everybody is saying what a great rate the pound is and how strong it is . But long term that’s just not true . Get the graphs up they don’t lie , look at the pound v dollar and euro for the last 25 years and what do you see ? You think pound dollar at 1.34 and pound euro at 1.19 is great ? It’s awful just not quite as awful as it was that’s all I’m saying
Nick ************
@Harry ********
and, of course, you have forgotten all about covid and the effect that had. The UK has recovered better from being out of the EU than it would have done still a member. And of course what I said earlier is absolutely true and relevant. Brexit was the best thing that happened to the UK. Subsequent , self serving, lying, hypocritical and anti British governments have been the worst.
Harry *********
@Nick ***********
Brexiteers like you always ignore the destruction of our national currency , a price worth paying just to keep out a few foreigners from coming in ? Never mind our currency was and still is destroyed .

Covid … what only the UK get it did they ? USA not get it covid , the world not get it ? yet the GBP V USD rate hardly been lower in the whole of history . But don’t let facts get in the way of it
Nick ************
@Harry ********
to end this argument simply the main reason for most of what is going wrong in the UK right now is not because of Brexit. It is not because of covid. It is because of years of people running the country who are anti British and rotten to the core or have you not noticed the hypocrisy and corruption? And before you ask, I do support the Reform Party under Nigel Farage. He is the only hope left.

In addition, remainers like you will continue to thwart any hope of the good that should be coming from it in every way you can because you are so bitter.

I completely agree with you. It was a democratic vote to leave but anything and everything has been done by those in power to stop it happening so it will never move on until they are gone.
Markie ******
@Nick ***********
not sure if anyone stopping it as Cameron could of as it was non binding. Its over trouble is the poms either will not talk about and blame everyone instead of getting on with it. It's embarrassing
Nick ************
@Markie *****
You talk about Poms as though you mean everyone in the UK. Lots of ordinary working people have got on with it while many others have been burdened by the beauracracy surrounding every governments attempt to stay as close to the EU as possible. Then there are the others who beleive that it is Europe to blame when, in reality, the UK will always be part of Eurooe. Tge UK population is sick to the stomach if being lied to time and time again, for one side to call out the TIGER for exactly what they also do once they get voted in. No one wanted a labour government but there was no alternative. It has turned out even worse than even I could have imagined, The boats could be stopped overnight but too many people and entities are making huge amounts of money to do anything about it. Personaly I beleive that UK politicians have relied so heavily on the EU to tell them what to do that they are completely incapable of any move in the right direction. Now, they have no one to blame, as it goes tits up, but themselves.

25yrs ago ( before Briexit) the pound was 1.15 to the euro. Now it’s about 1.19.

When we FINALLY achieve complete Brexit it should strengthen even more.

yes it’s improved a little bit but over the long term it’s still awful . For years the euro was in the 1.4-1.60 range and the dollar of course mostly 1.50-2.00 over the past 20 years .. until you know what happened in 2016 .

Most currencies against baht are down. Thai Baht is very strong and a lot of talk is going on in Thailand about how it’s impacting here.
Jason ********
@Evan *******
it will impact tourism and foreign investment.

@Evan *******
Big article in Bangkok Post lobbying to get it back up to 36 or 37, many exports suffering.

But with new Coup, who knows
Ian *********
@Evan *******
how is it impacting here?

can’t export as much when your money is strong.

simple economics the Thai baht exchange rate means we are getting less baht from our home currency. At the same time a significant increase in oil prices (Isreal is now believed to be planning retaliatory action on Iran oil fields) means we will have increased fuel costs, most things in Thailand are delivered by road. So on the one hand we have less baht in our pockets and it will cost more to pay our bills. A double whammy that was the point of my comment. The exchange rate and inflation from oil will both have a similar negative impact to those of us that live here. They are mutually inclusive not exclusive events.
Don ***********
@Ian ********
That tiff is just about to kick off Iran's oil output grew from 3.66 million bpd in 2022 to 3.99 million bpd in 2023. According to the EIA, Iran holds the world's third largest proven oil reserves, as well as the world's second largest natural gas reserves.

the reason for price increases. Israel is not going to let Iran continue to fire rockets into their country. This will affect the price of oil, as their oil facilities are soft targets.

condo final stage payments reported in Bangkok times are being delayed due to increased capital costs, fuel is imported, once petrol prices are affected inflation will start to increase creating problems for those in Thailand who don’t have a lot of money. This will affect both Thais and farangs.
Iain *********
@Don **********
high Baht means petrol imports priced in US dollar cost less baht and if petrol prices are affected they will be lower.
Don ***********
@Iain ********
read the room “motorists might be heading towards higher petrol and diesel prices when they fill up the tank in a couple of weeks as oil prices surged amid rising tensions in the Middle East, a situation that could lead to the cost of everyday goods jumping.
Iain *********
@Don **********
which would be nothing to do with the value of the baht against other currencies.

And despite today's surge in $ per barrel for crude the international prices for crude today are still lower than 1 month, 3 months or a year ago.
Erik ***********
@Don **********
I don´t get it: Imported fuel must be cheaper when Baht strengthens?
Don ***********
@Erik **********
yes got that the wrong way round, it’s exports that suffer from a strong baht but watching the latest news in the Middle East I can see the price of a barrel is likely to add “fuel” to the situation. :)
Von ******
@Don **********
Saudi and US both producing MORE oil as of yesterday and the US price per barrel of crude on World Market has been heading downwards not up despite Rus/Ukraine conflict and the Israel/Palestine tiff.

Those of us who live abroad have the same issue. You never know which way it could go. However, when you need the cash you need it and there’s no way of getting around that!

I have had some great conversion rates, US Dollar, over the last couple decades to average in with the few not so great years. Exchange Rate Fluctuations are something we should factor in our decision before deciding to live overseas.
