TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on the recent increase in the British Pound (GBP) against the Thai Baht (THB), with participants expressing optimism about the favorable exchange rate for UK expats living in Thailand. However, the conversation also touches on historical exchange rate trends, potential tax implications for expats, and broader economic contexts such as Brexit's impact on the UK economy and trade. Various suggestions for investment opportunities such as Thai gold and tech stocks were mentioned, reflecting concerns about economic stability and future financial strategies for expatriates.

That's not the only thing growing against the Thai
Harry *********
Ok here’s the facts , throughout most of modern times that we all remember the GBP V THB rate was

Before the 1992 ERM crisis about 44-46 , 1993-1997 ( first half ) 37-41 , 1997(second half ) -2016 between 92 slowly back to about 55, the insanity of Brexit 2016-2023 37-42 , finally after years of suffering since Brexit it’s dragged itself up to 46.75 this morning . So historically about the average but hardly soaring . At 46 Thailand is cheap but not that cheap

/16 was 52.50 baht. By 1st of July 2016 fell to 45.0 baht with a later further corection to 35 baht. Pound therefore still did not recover compared to Baht exchange pre-brexit. Hardly a recovery. Same trend against € and US$ over last 8 years since Brexit.
David ***********
@Rok *******
then youd agree that helps our export market ?
Rok ********
@David **********
exchange rate does help exporters but admin burden more than cancels out the benefit of no longer being in the single market. And since we are in a Thai expats group the drop in exchange rate was devastating for quite a few on non-o pension visa.

*Edit: lol @ the absolute state of the replies already rolling in here 😂

Throughout the years of being helplessly depressed in the post-2016 era watching my country shit its pants and turn itself into a clown car, I *never* thought I'd see the x rate over 45 again. The UK's economy is still ~5% smaller because of Brexit, and we continue to hemorrhage about £40 billion a year in lost trade-- it will take years to recover from what those idiots did-- but having a serious PM and cabinet for the first time in almost a decade and not having to watch those retarded adult toddlers vandalise my country is the most positive thing to happen for a long time.

The political game now will be to slowly forge back pragmatic ties with our nearest neighbours while not actually mentioning anything beginning with Eur.. or Brex... in case the hordes of slavering fucking window-lickers that still think, in 2024, that Brexit has been a net positive, rise out of their box again and start screeching... god forbid

You are completely missing that Britain was a net contributor to EU, as the rest of the formerly wealthy north-western europe. Whereas the east and south are mostly net beneficiaries, year after year. EU is socialism across borders and has never been a good idea for any well developed nation, from an economical standpoint. And how much did open borders costs you in welfare to immigrants? And why would you let a french suit decide the laws in your country? EU was only a good idea for the poor.

I think the Danes are still too naive to make that move, unfortunately. I don't know why anyone ever thought this was a good idea. Maybe I'm just selfish but I don't like paying 75% in combined taxes and VAT and work till 70, to pay for Spaniards having fiesta every day, siesta 50 times a year and retire when they are 65. But their plan worked. We are now mentioned as states in Europe, rather than nations. Just like United states of America. When I mentioned that was the agenda, in the 90's, I was just a tinfoil hat.

They also claimed it was a security issue. Bigger is safer. Right. Now we are all in a proxy war with Russia.

Best of luck getting out of the gang! You will be in bad standing just like UK but it will be good in the long run.

All the usual lines, I see. What specifically have we been spared from as a result of not being in the EU and/or single market? Any economic downturn across the continent affects us whether or not we're in EU or not-- that's how economic contagion works, and the EU is by far our biggest trading partner and will and would have remained so under any form of Brexit you could imagine. All that's happened is there's now a bunch of extra red tape and checks and barriers impeding the flow of goods & services that just hamstrung the economy and made everyone poorer for *no fucking reason*. Get the *slightest clue* of what you're talking about before forming opinions on things ffs

Inigo *********
@Alan ********
I care about being made objectively poorer as a direct result of your reckless stupidity. Ordinary families-- families like mine-- hundreds, if not thousands of pounds a year worse off, during a cost of living crisis, ffs. That's the only real legacy of Brexit.

The hypocrisy here is unreal as well. Just imagine if this self-imposed disaster had been the result of some *lefty* policy. What would you lot be saying then? Just imagine if this had been the brainchild of Dianne Abbot. Imagine if the fucking economy was 5% smaller because she'd fucked her numbers up. lol. Would you be acting like this now? All high & mighty about morals over finances? no, you'd be aploplectic wouldn't you, you fucking retard. but because it's nationalistic right-wingers doing it while waving silly little plastic union jacks, you give them a free pass. Modern conservatives (i.e. not conservatives at all, but tub-thumping populist grifters) shouldn't be let anywhere near the reigns of power. Absolute imbeciles. @Tin *********
to be completely transparent I have zero clue about Platinum. However it’s a commodity and should be considered as such. Commodities have slightly different trading patterns. Personally I’m not a fan.

Bitcoin if by far the best asset and it’s going through mainstream adoption during this cycle. The best time to buy bitcoin was at the bottom of the bear market end 2022

I hold a significantly amount of bitcoin and expect it to do well. The chart looks amazingly good

Next is tech stocks or just an ETF tracking Nasdaq. Basically that’s it. Everything else underperforms the money debasement and you want to hold an asset that are outperforming debasement

Uranium is interesting as well due the increasing demand while simultaneously having a bit of a supply crunch. It has been doing amazing however currently in a big consolidation phase. I would wait for a bullish signal before investing
Tin **********
Per *********
@Tin *********
ETH has been this cycle biggest disappointment. Basically outperformed by all major alts this cycle. It does seem like it’s about to change.

Solana is crushing Ethereum and will continue this performance. I swapped my entire ETH position for BTC and SOL back in October and November and that was a great decision. Still hold a tiny bag but only to use as a swap coin for micro caps

Bitcoin is 70% of my entire crypto portfolie because it's the safest coin of them all. not necessarily the best performing though

Gold is the worst asset to hold. It’s been doing noting since 1960
Ash ***********
@Per ********
it's been going up for a couple of years now - £1870- ounce today
Per *********
@Ash **********
Gold has been going up in dollar value! That’s correct

But you’re forgetting the money debasement which is fluctuating between 5 and 12%

You can find more details in the money supply chart aka M2SL

If you want to monitor the real appreciation of any asset then you must divide the asset with the money debasement factor. This is the only valid benchmarking

Looking a gold it’s been the poorest performing asset for more than 50 years

I’ve attached the Gold chart compensated for money debasement

EDIT!

This chart is a couple of months old hence not reflecting the most recent price action. However even the recent bullish performance is still shit 💩

That said I would be careful right now. Not because I fear a major crash or anything. But it’s been overbought and currently seems like it could drop a bit more

You can buy NVDA but don’t fomo in and buy lumps!! Use a DCA strategy

Try to understand how the markets works. Look for trends and NEVER day to day price actions. Learn about sentiment and you will thank me later. Sentiment is perhaps one of the most important signals. It require a lot of learning but it’s worth the effort

Sentiment tells you what’s going on in the market. Countertrade it and stop listening to media’s, magazines, experts, investment gurus and in particular the social media army like me 🤷‍♂️
