The discussion focuses on the recent increase in the British Pound (GBP) against the Thai Baht (THB), with participants expressing optimism about the favorable exchange rate for UK expats living in Thailand. However, the conversation also touches on historical exchange rate trends, potential tax implications for expats, and broader economic contexts such as Brexit's impact on the UK economy and trade. Various suggestions for investment opportunities such as Thai gold and tech stocks were mentioned, reflecting concerns about economic stability and future financial strategies for expatriates.

That's not the only thing growing against the Thai

Ok here’s the facts , throughout most of modern times that we all remember the GBP V THB rate was
Before the 1992 ERM crisis about 44-46 , 1993-1997 ( first half ) 37-41 , 1997(second half ) -2016 between 92 slowly back to about 55, the insanity of Brexit 2016-2023 37-42 , finally after years of suffering since Brexit it’s dragged itself up to 46.75 this morning . So historically about the average but hardly soaring . At 46 Thailand is cheap but not that cheap
have you not seen UK 2016-2024? The current grown up governemnt with a huge majority is the consequence of on so many levels of failure including Brexit of last 8 years. £1 on
*****
/16 was 52.50 baht. By 1st of July 2016 fell to 45.0 baht with a later further corection to 35 baht. Pound therefore still did not recover compared to Baht exchange pre-brexit. Hardly a recovery. Same trend against € and US$ over last 8 years since Brexit.
exchange rate does help exporters but admin burden more than cancels out the benefit of no longer being in the single market. And since we are in a Thai expats group the drop in exchange rate was devastating for quite a few on non-o pension visa.
but those same expats not bothered by the 20thb drop from 75 to 52 from 2007 to 2011 which had nothing to do with Brexit ? Funny that, i bet those grumbling are remainers ?

*Edit: lol @ the absolute state of the replies already rolling in here 😂
Throughout the years of being helplessly depressed in the post-2016 era watching my country shit its pants and turn itself into a clown car, I *never* thought I'd see the x rate over 45 again. The UK's economy is still ~5% smaller because of Brexit, and we continue to hemorrhage about £40 billion a year in lost trade-- it will take years to recover from what those idiots did-- but having a serious PM and cabinet for the first time in almost a decade and not having to watch those retarded adult toddlers vandalise my country is the most positive thing to happen for a long time.
The political game now will be to slowly forge back pragmatic ties with our nearest neighbours while not actually mentioning anything beginning with Eur.. or Brex... in case the hordes of slavering fucking window-lickers that still think, in 2024, that Brexit has been a net positive, rise out of their box again and start screeching... god forbid
you clowns wouldn't know what "democracy" is if it took you up the arse, you absolute melt. Brexit was the least democratic thing to happen to the UK in modern history. It was a fucking *short circuiting* of democracy. Go and cry elsewhere
#most democratic thing to happen, most. You clearly dont understand the concept of democracy. I guess your uni lecturers told you something different and you believed it. You dont understand the simplist of terms
You are completely missing that Britain was a net contributor to EU, as the rest of the formerly wealthy north-western europe. Whereas the east and south are mostly net beneficiaries, year after year. EU is socialism across borders and has never been a good idea for any well developed nation, from an economical standpoint. And how much did open borders costs you in welfare to immigrants? And why would you let a french suit decide the laws in your country? EU was only a good idea for the poor.
I think the Danes are still too naive to make that move, unfortunately. I don't know why anyone ever thought this was a good idea. Maybe I'm just selfish but I don't like paying 75% in combined taxes and VAT and work till 70, to pay for Spaniards having fiesta every day, siesta 50 times a year and retire when they are 65. But their plan worked. We are now mentioned as states in Europe, rather than nations. Just like United states of America. When I mentioned that was the agenda, in the 90's, I was just a tinfoil hat.
They also claimed it was a security issue. Bigger is safer. Right. Now we are all in a proxy war with Russia.
Best of luck getting out of the gang! You will be in bad standing just like UK but it will be good in the long run.
like all fridge-temperature-IQ right wing snowflakes you resort to trolling when you realise I can debate circles around you on this subject all day long. Seen the same thing a thousand times. Once again: I've spent years doing this. I know fine well that there is an unsalvageable vacuum between the ears of every single Brexiter in existence. Every single one I've ever engaged with, in person, and in real life. Every one, without exception. United in stupidity.
whats your background Inigo ? How many FTSE businesses have you developed, how many times have you been voted in democratically etc. Or is all your info gained from Steve Bray and Femi !. Im happy to be corrected but i suspect Dyson knows a bit more than you !
is that it, then? Googled it, realised you're talking complete, demonstrable horseshit, and just quietly backing away like Homer Simpson into a hedge?
That's right, mate: we do *massively* more trade with the EU bloc than we do with the US; which is what you'd expect given the fact it's an economic super power 7 times our size, 20 miles off our coast and economic centre of gravity (the South East), as well as sharing a land border with us.
this is why I find it helps if you think of Brexiters as actual retarded children. Once you understand that's what they are, so much of what they say and think becomes understandable and predictable
notice how much you write in response to the insignificant tit-for-tat stuff, but couldn't muster a single word in response to all the actual arguments I pitched to you above ^
imagine putting up a post, getting roasted in the comments, and then just falling back to blubbering piss poor trolling because you can't think what else to say
any analysis concluding that Brexit was anything less than the biggest national embarrassment since the Suez crisis and an economic catastrophe are utterly deluded.
All the usual lines, I see. What specifically have we been spared from as a result of not being in the EU and/or single market? Any economic downturn across the continent affects us whether or not we're in EU or not-- that's how economic contagion works, and the EU is by far our biggest trading partner and will and would have remained so under any form of Brexit you could imagine. All that's happened is there's now a bunch of extra red tape and checks and barriers impeding the flow of goods & services that just hamstrung the economy and made everyone poorer for *no fucking reason*. Get the *slightest clue* of what you're talking about before forming opinions on things ffs
you talk about trade, but we all know that you don't care about trade, its only freedom of moment you care about, all the remoaners are the same, happy to sell their own country out so they can travel easily in the EU, wake up, you can still travel inside the EU that hasn't stopped, and you will find the world is a far larger than the EU
I care about being made objectively poorer as a direct result of your reckless stupidity. Ordinary families-- families like mine-- hundreds, if not thousands of pounds a year worse off, during a cost of living crisis, ffs. That's the only real legacy of Brexit.
The hypocrisy here is unreal as well. Just imagine if this self-imposed disaster had been the result of some *lefty* policy. What would you lot be saying then? Just imagine if this had been the brainchild of Dianne Abbot. Imagine if the fucking economy was 5% smaller because she'd fucked her numbers up. lol. Would you be acting like this now? All high & mighty about morals over finances? no, you'd be aploplectic wouldn't you, you fucking retard. but because it's nationalistic right-wingers doing it while waving silly little plastic union jacks, you give them a free pass. Modern conservatives (i.e. not conservatives at all, but tub-thumping populist grifters) shouldn't be let anywhere near the reigns of power. Absolute imbeciles. But please, tell me more about how it's all someone else's fault and your shitty life choices and voting record aren't to blame at all.
I think you need to get back on your meds, and nobody believes you! It's freedom of movement, why can't you just admit it and stop making a fool of yourself?
once again, notice how you don't respond directly to anything I've said and just circle back to repeating some trite narrative, like a retarded parrot, and like all Brextards ever do
it's obvious you haven't got a clue what's happening within the EU, it's not my place to educate you, as they say, “ignorance is bliss” Enjoy your blissful existence.
notice how there's actually substance and specifics in the argument I gave you-- that you could have engaged with if you were able-- while you just gesture vaguely at narratives "EU is bad; better off out" etc. Always the same. Years I've spent going round in circles with Brexiters trying to find one in 17 million that has a modicum of intellectual honesty-- the search continues.
Not for the first time I've noticed the similarities between Brextards/Trumpers and the unhinged campus woke-scolds on the far Left. When are you shaving one half of your head and dying your armpit hair pink?
correct. Democracy was denied. Still in the EU Single Market and under EU rule of law. Mass immigration etc etc. Brexit hasnt failed, politicians failed
give it a few weeks when the honeymoon is over . Starmer now realising how big the job is. They moaned about child allowance just for first 2 kids . But have kept it . Moaned about money being sent to help tackle illegal migrants but sent 84m yesterday etc
it’s a systematic failure that’s a catalyst to the start of more riots and civil unrest. Have you seen the latest driveway tax? It’s fucking joke surely?!! How far do they have to push us before we all blow the dust off our pitchfork’s and revolt. It won’t be long until every worker in every town in the uk can’t go to work without paying a clean air tax. Meanwhile they’re geo engineering the weather to fulfil their lie about global warming so we all capitulate and pay the piss take taxes. When will we rise against these globalists and take the power back? I used to love being English, but I’m ashamed to carry a British passport nowadays. We’re a fucking joke to the rest of the world. Great my arse!
to be completely transparent I have zero clue about Platinum. However it’s a commodity and should be considered as such. Commodities have slightly different trading patterns. Personally I’m not a fan.
Bitcoin if by far the best asset and it’s going through mainstream adoption during this cycle. The best time to buy bitcoin was at the bottom of the bear market end 2022
I hold a significantly amount of bitcoin and expect it to do well. The chart looks amazingly good
Next is tech stocks or just an ETF tracking Nasdaq. Basically that’s it. Everything else underperforms the money debasement and you want to hold an asset that are outperforming debasement
Uranium is interesting as well due the increasing demand while simultaneously having a bit of a supply crunch. It has been doing amazing however currently in a big consolidation phase. I would wait for a bullish signal before investing
ETH has been this cycle biggest disappointment. Basically outperformed by all major alts this cycle. It does seem like it’s about to change.
Solana is crushing Ethereum and will continue this performance. I swapped my entire ETH position for BTC and SOL back in October and November and that was a great decision. Still hold a tiny bag but only to use as a swap coin for micro caps
Bitcoin is 70% of my entire crypto portfolie because it's the safest coin of them all. not necessarily the best performing though
Gold has been going up in dollar value! That’s correct
But you’re forgetting the money debasement which is fluctuating between 5 and 12%
You can find more details in the money supply chart aka M2SL
If you want to monitor the real appreciation of any asset then you must divide the asset with the money debasement factor. This is the only valid benchmarking
Looking a gold it’s been the poorest performing asset for more than 50 years
I’ve attached the Gold chart compensated for money debasement
EDIT!
This chart is a couple of months old hence not reflecting the most recent price action. However even the recent bullish performance is still shit 💩
especially when on a global liquidity chart it's actually lost against even the most basic index fund. But it's nice for the math ignorant to think they are winning.
NVDA is a great stock and will without doubt continue to perform
That said I would be careful right now. Not because I fear a major crash or anything. But it’s been overbought and currently seems like it could drop a bit more
You can buy NVDA but don’t fomo in and buy lumps!! Use a DCA strategy
Try to understand how the markets works. Look for trends and NEVER day to day price actions. Learn about sentiment and you will thank me later. Sentiment is perhaps one of the most important signals. It require a lot of learning but it’s worth the effort
Sentiment tells you what’s going on in the market. Countertrade it and stop listening to media’s, magazines, experts, investment gurus and in particular the social media army like me 🤷♂️
Microsoft is a good stock. Zoom out and look at the chart. Similar to my NVDA comment…. NEVER EVER lump buy unless you’re a skilled trader. Use a DCA strategy
Don’t sleep on Microsoft. It will perform but I won’t be the fastest horse. It’s a good stock for your backbone portfolio
you need to look at the trend for the past 5 years

Wait till they print billions to give 10,000฿ away to millions of the new digital wallet program. 6 months later the conversion rate will be even more favorable.
I have read all the dual taxation agreements and the uk one as I'm British. It only gives you a tax credit in Thailand for tax payed in the uk that's all but does not cover everything and you need to show the tax uou payed as well
but it would mean the Thai economy is kaput so I'm happy with 45 baht and the thai people being able to eat and live, many are really struggling now as prices of basics go up every day, virtually. I can't figure why everything has to go up in multiples of 5 and 10 baht, a 5 baht increase on a 25 baht coffee is 20%, which is driving inflation and unaffordable to Thai's and inconvenient to Farang. According to the Thai news, rising prices are stopping tourists coming here, instead going to Cambodia and Laos. Why not put up by 1 or 2 baht if they have to ? Is it because they don't want multiple small coins in circulation? Sorry rant over.
