Why Thailand Is Tightening Visa Rules

Many people are asking why Thailand reduced the tourist visa stay from 60 days to 30 days, and why the government is now reviewing almost every type of visa. The reason is simple: too many low-quality tourists are coming and causing problems in the country. Tourists with no respect, bad behavior, criminal actions, and no manners often create trouble.

This also includes the DTV visa. It became one of the most attractive long-term visas because of the low cost, but unfortunately it also attracted many people with bad attitudes and no ethics.

My personal experience:

Last week, I went to enjoy Havana Bar in Sukhumvit with 4 friends. We ordered one bottle of whisky, so we got a sofa table and a big bucket of ice.

Around midnight, two European couples came into the bar. They only paid the entrance fee, which included some beers. Very quickly, their beers were finished, but they kept dancing and enjoying themselves.

About one hour later, one of the men suddenly came to my table and tried to take ice from our bucket with his hand. Imagine that — directly trying to take someone else’s ice without even asking first. Maybe he was thirsty but did not have money to buy a bottle of water for 80 THB, and he also did not have the manners to ask politely. Honestly, as a European tourist in a bar, not even being able to buy mineral water is embarrassing.

I immediately said:

“What are you doing bro?”

Then his girlfriend stopped him before he touched the ice and apologized to us.

I only replied:

“Get out of here if you don’t have money. Shame on you.”

You see the quality of tourists like this?

And this is only one example among many cases of low-quality tourists coming to Thailand.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but I support Thailand making tourist rules stricter, so we don’t keep meeting losers who come here only to create problems.

Thank you.
Answer summary
Thailand is tightening its visa rules, particularly reducing the tourist visa stay from 60 days to 30 days. The main concern is that low-quality tourists are causing problems in the country, exhibiting disrespectful behavior, and creating disturbances. The discussion indicates that stricter visa rules aim to deter undesirable tourism, as seen through personal anecdotes of bad behavior in bars. However, many commentators argue that the length of the visa alone does not solve the issue of poor behavior among tourists, suggesting that enforcing existing laws and improving overall tourist quality is key.

You started this with "Still don’t see how reducing the 60 to 30 days is going to improve the quality of tourists".

By now I think you don't want to see.

Anyone with any sense can see that vacationers spend more on average than people who stay longer, and that the average vacationer stays no more than 3 weeks, anywhere in the world. Therefore, it makes no sense to have a visa-free period longer than 30 days.

All people staying longer than 30 days need extension or visa and thus can be screened, filtering out the ones you don't like.

Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Ian *******
When they want ONLY tourists spending a lot they indeed should close cheap hotels.

But nobody is saying there is no room for other tourists.

Thailand like all countries like to know who visits them and wanyt to know some background.

That is the reason visas excist, the longer people want to stay, the more you like to know about them.

For security of a country visa exempt just is a risk, therefore you want to grant that only to people spending a short holiday, because of lower risk, higher spending and more likely not want to buy a visa for a short time.

People staying for one or two months can of course also be high quality tourists, but in that case they would not have a problem to prepare their journey and apply for a visa.

You don't need statistics at all to understand that most people spending their holiday stay less than 4 weeks.

In most countries they don't have more days off from work.

It are just the statistics Thai authorities use, and it makes sense.

Somebody spending his holiday money for 2 weeks in a luxurous resorts spends more than somebody who does not even have the money to buy an appropriate visa, or for some reasons does not want to be checked for the visa.

Besides they have figures of 2 years ago from the situation they now will return to.

Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Ian *******
Yes, the group tourists spending money in more expensive hotels, enjouing their holiday normally stay far less than 30 days.

People staying over 30 days, not wanting to buy the appropriate visa for some reason is not the group they want.
Ian ********
Ian ********
@Luit ****************
So the group you don’t want only comes for 30 days or gets another 30 day extension. How does that filter any group.Terrible logic.😨if Thailand wants to improve they need to look inwards and not outwards. Otherwise it’s the usual “flip flop” decision making.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Ian *******
Reducing certainly can be a way to have better quality on average when you can filter out the group you don't want.

We have to see if it is working, but in fact they will return to the situation from just 2 years ago.

So when they think 2 years ago was better, this is the correct move.

You seem to suffer from the same delusions as the government. Reducing the amount of time a bad visitor spends in the country doesn't change their behavior. 30 days is still a long time to create mischief and display bad behavior.

Other countries have much longer durations to their tourist visas because they realize the length of stay doesn't change a person's nature. Only extensive background checks and law enforcement will actually have a meaningful impact. Making all visas an application process with a rudimentary background check might help a little but at what cost to the economy and the families that survive on tourist spending? It is a tricky thing to balance.

I think the real issue isn't the visa but Thailand itself. There are tons of places where this type of behavior doesn't occur BUT Thailand has promoted it's party/bar seen for decades so now it is stuck with that reputation which draws partiers. I think the visitors that exhibit bad behavior generally start out their stay in these locations (Pattaya, Phuket, and even Hua Hin to a smaller degree) and take what they have experienced to other areas that don't want or accept that behavior.

Reform the party/prostitution/drug areas and they will attract a different type of visitor. ***Las Vegas doesn't attract the same people as Disneyland***

First mistake Its an excemption .. 2nd , its not about rich or poorer .. its about misuse of the 60 days instead of using the Visa options, where they have better control over where people are and come from. And this is the main reason : Authorities found foreigners using the extended stay to work illegally, run businesses through Thai nominees, and operate criminal networks on Thai territory. The Thai Hotels Association reported a surge in illegal short-term apartment rentals, while officials warned the scheme was being exploited to undermine national security.

So your judgement of the drunk iceman, is a only a bug inside your head .. Sir ...

I think you will find they are looking at the visas because of one type of tourist and those tourists are from a small illegal state in the middleast. These tourists are rude, obnoxious, entitled.

They turn up and try to take over wherever they go. I mean look at Koh Phangnan for an example.

I definitely have seen stuff like this where Foriegn people will come over and try to mooch off of people with a table and drinks. People who stand right on the busy street smoking a cigarette or weed, people peeing in the ocean with a restroom nearby, the list is endless but basically they have no respect for others or the country. Honestly some of them do have the money they are just douche bags and don’t care.

Is reducing the visa free limit going to actually stop them from coming though? I personally thing the laws actually being enforced would be what helps get rid of these types of people

YUZA bro. Forget about all the negative comments. I strongly agree with you. There are a lot of cheap farangs out there. It even come to a point as an Asian I look down on these farangs. My story is different but same context. Many years ago when I was still mongering in BKK, I bought a freelancer from thermal, I bring her to a club. In the club, there is this farang who kept cutting into us when we were dancing and face my girl to dance infront of me and trying to impress my girl. In many cases, such thing happened, a fight will follow. But not me. I asked him bro what are you doing? He said it is just fun. I told him you want fun, you can have her instead. I told him to empty his wallet for 6000 baht to take her. He just too ashamed that he don’t have the money and walked off. Yes, you are right. There are many people who come Thailand without money to play. For those who says taking your ice only is ok, nothing big because it wasn’t stepped on their tail. If I stepped all over them, take their drinks, try to take their girl then let’s see if these people are ok. 🙄

"High quality tourists" is the holy grail of tourism.

India too has been chasing that dream. Their visas have to be applied for ,nothing available on arrival.

The cheapest still go there however and why not?

Cheap tourists frequent cheap places and the proprietors of those establishments are happy for the custom, very happy.

What you describe is a behavioural issue and THAT is the main problem. People feel entitled to do what they want ,where they want.

Low quality tourists like you call them don't have the money to stay here 60 days. They stay 14 days and want to live their holiday at the fullest in that period of time. That's where it goes wrong. Better to cancell the visa exempt scheme totally and let everybody apply for an online visa.

Why I don’t like going to crowded popular clubs/bars wish farang. I’ve seen too many stupid fights or bad people do similar or worse as OP is describing to me. The last time I was at a popular EDM club and had a private table with my girlfriend and her friend. Some European with his lady friend forcefully tried pushing me out of the way from my seat so he could get a view of the balcony. I was in shock and said wtf are you doing and then security jumped in fast removing him. An hour later a different man just sits at my private table while my gf & her friend are at the restroom. I have a tower of Heineken and other drinks. And my patience is gone at this points I tell him he needs to leave. He has the audacity to try to argue and I tell him calmly I don’t want to hurt him and didn’t want to be arrested. A Thai lady next table over talked sense into him. I’m not saying all Thai people are angels but I only get these kind of issues with other farang. I’ve seen so many dumb fights farang vs farang being Mao mak mak. you are doing a very incorrect assessment of the situation. Middle class people(the bulk of tourism in numbers) in general became significantly poorer after covid. So it is not that Thailand is getting lower quality tourists, it is that people, even with less money, still want to see the world. On the other side of this is Thailand, with a faltering economy and even less tourists than in 2019. So Thailand is probably trying to juggle between bringing people in with some money at least, but at the same time that won't cause too much trouble.
Jody *******
Jody *******
The reason the government 'might' change the rule is about ONE thing only: distracting the public from other more serious issues which they can't or won't fix.

This happens in cycles. Spend enough time in Thailand & you will see.

You were incredibly low class yourself to judge the guy reaching for your ice & speaking to him like that instead of giving him a chance to explain if it were a misunderstanding or something. Judging people on money is lowest quality behavior.

Yo, Bro! Just so you know, Thailand always had many low end foreigners living here for many years. The only change is that now the Farang lowlife is moving on to other places like Vietnam and Cambodia because they cant even afford Isaan, Therefore an increased number of Chinese and Indians without the best manners visit the country, but the amount of "bad foreigners" has not increased.

The reason they do another "sweeping crackdown" for a few weeks before everything returns to normal, is that the economy is very slow, while debt levels have risen to astronomical heights. The "elite" that has sucked this country dry for decades needs a scapegoat to blame and what comes in more handy than foreigners?

Wealth or social status does not make you a better person or a better tourist. I have known plenty of great people that struggle financially . Likewise I have know a few well off people that are complete A-Holes.The issue is not how long the visa is or the type of visa. There is no way shortening the waiver will select "better tourists". The only way the quality of tourist will improve is to deter bad behaviour. The penalties for crime by a foreigner are not severe enough to deter bad behaviour and most of the time bad behaviours is ignored and the law not enforced at all. Not that taking a piece of ice is crime, that's just poor manners. As a foreigner commit a crime, any crime, you should be locked up, deported and banned from the Kingdom for a minimum 5 years. If the penalties were a lot more harsh, you would see a lot less bad behaviour.

I’m a telecom CEO. I also have grade 8 education. I won’t buy ice if there’s a bucket beside me You’re not using- but I’d ask with a nod first. I’m also perfectly mannered at any level of intoxication, and you would all call me a low quality cheap Charlie cause I think 20 baht eggs at 7-11 are my favourite thing to eat here. And pineapple also 20 baht ….

Don’t be so quick to judge people on a 30 second interaction. I bet some people think I’m homeless in a sweaty gym shirt sitting on a curb infront of 7-11 eating my eggs. 5555

The DTV visa has turned into the “Cash Cow” of all visas

The schools get paid, the agents get paid

The embassies/consulates that review the documents will either grant the visa, deny the visa or issue a METV visa

All for the same price of ฿10k

The schools and the agent get their money before the visa is issued with no refunds

Yes I know some people do it on their own and some go the workcation route as opposed to the soft power route

But even the workcation route you still could be denied and out ฿10k

I personally don’t see the DTV going anywhere from an economic standpoint but I do see the fail rate going through the roof…but still being a cash cow that you won’t put out to pasture

YUZA I think you'll find it's mainly people who spend lots of money and get really drunk who start trouble.

Not sensible tourists who go out for one or two drinks.
DTV_Pag*******

LoyalRambutan6277 Exactly. He’s sipping on one bottle with four other people and he has the nerve to tell someone else to go away if they don’t have money 🤣

DTV_Pag_Backer you are so disrespectful. Honestly I can't believe you live in Thailand. Author thanks for the message it's true Thailand become bad because low income and or bad people start to be accepted... It's exactly like European countries or even United States of America , full of immigrants without any "savoir - vivre"

YUZA No, but they contribute to human and drug trafficking, which has a bigger overall effect on Thailand and the world.

Your theory is flawed. Poor doesn't equate to low quality, plenty people with money are rude, and where I come from, the people with the most money aren't big spenders, that's why they have so much money. Stop judging people based on income. Buying a bottle of whisky between 5 of you is pretty cheap I'd say. As a Scotsman, I'd buy 2 bottles just for myself 🙂

Difference between rich in the instance and wealthy and knowledgeable in the longer run, an example of such a perspective can be drive from Japanese investments: traditionally known to last for very long term rather than. Cowboy corporate intrusions that creates social and economic disrespect

the problem with your post is consider budget tourists with low quality tourists. Well behaved and educated people doesn't have to do with having money. Tons of wealthy people with bad manners around. But you're belong to the ones who take "having money" as quality. Shame on you
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Vira *****
Having money is just one quality, of course that does not guarantee good behaviour, but I am quite sure for Thailand just as most other countries they see spending money as the most important quality.

then the rich Chinese boy who crashed his car with military weapons should be treated as VIP. Money now isn't as important as national security hence the overhaul of visas including thai privilege visas

I came here to say that. Money does automatically equal class. The visa changes are more about corruption, not bad behavior. If that was the case, the walking streets like Soi Cowboy and Soi 11 in Bangkok would be close down.
