I see a lot of disinformation spread by anonymous accounts. I don’t think there’s any reason to be anonymous who agrees?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the topic of anonymous posting in Thai expat groups, with participants expressing mixed opinions on the relevance and impact of anonymity. Some argue that anonymity allows individuals to ask sensitive visa-related questions without fear of backlash, while others contend that it often fosters disinformation and trolling. The conversation highlights instances of users facing abuse over comments made under their real names, emphasizing the need for safe spaces for honest discussions. Ultimately, many suggest that both anonymous and named posts contribute to both valuable insights and misinformation in online communities.
it’s not like I said I demand that demand I solely demand that this happens I basically put it up for a vote because I was curious to see how many people felt the same way
The only reason I post anonymously is because I feel my question is going to make me look SO INCREDIBLY STUPID. I'll still do it when I don't have proper information. I love googling everything when I need to, but sometimes you just want to see other people's perspectives and how they did things

We are all strangers on the internet. You could use your real name, a nickname or post anonymously and I honestly wouldn't care (or even notice)

By posting anonymous no one can DM/private message you with spam. That's the main reason people do it, and a very legitimate reason.

A lot of people believe that groups and forums like this are watched by immigration. None of us can know whether they are or not but I’m sure everyone will have an opinion. I think that’s often why people want to post anonymously.
A lot of people post about their worries about weaknesses in their application. Not sure how likely it is that visa officers lurk on this group, but it might lead to unwanted scrutiny.

There are sensitive topics that would better be covered under anonymous status... You're in Thailand and people aren't joking with diffamation law. As well, for the ones who got annoyed just ignore it, that's very simple. You'll find out that a lot of misinformation is coming from both sides here. Always make your own research on other websites/forums, etc.
It's not only about it. There are plenty of sensitive topics.

I agree in theory, but the average Western digital nomad in Thailand is so absolutely demented that they cannot help themselves but seethe with bitterness. It really is something to see. I've never seen so many unhappy people pulling others down in the comment sections of FB pages as I have in Thailand FB pages. It's wild!
Given that, I do understand why people post anonymously. I know people who just stopped posting because of the the insane people (mostly men). If you're a woman, there is a women-only Thai nomad page, and it's kind and supportive. I think it's all the men who couldn't make it back home who are so aggressive because they feel immasculated.
Not just digital nomads though - all foreigners here. It is the "Crabs in a bucket" syndrome!

I don’t care.
But let’s be real if the issue is bad information most of it is coming from normal accounts not anonymous posts and comments. Seems like a weird reason to want them gone to me.

There is absolutely some times when you should post anonymously. But I think usually people make fun of people enough when their post doesn’t need to be anonymous.
or when the posts sounds crazily fabricated. so many f4kes…

My main problem with anonymous posts is that some of them are people trying to see if they can bend the rules, asking the simplest of questions like "Is Thailand safe?", or just random gossip. It gets repetitive and seems the group is in a slump.

It’s ridiculous that people have an issue with anonymous and this post just about sums it up. I see as much misleading advice from names people as anonymous people. There is no need to know someone’s names unless you want to judge people. Posts like this will just make more people go anonymous. If you don’t like it leave the group.
people don't have issues with anonymous, people have issues with ppl who talk bs. People tend to be more honest and talk less s**t when they put their name and face on social medias....
yeah I’d say this group is generally pretty decent anyway but when there is bs, like you say, it’s as likely to come from a named poster as an anonymous one 🤷♂️
some people are just bored so they will post bs to get attention and replies. "I was at the airport and I saw 80% of guys from middle east countries having their dtv visa and get a lot of questions about their visa." "I got my bank account in 2 minutes with a dtv visa and a BJ from the bank clerk. I can't tell with branch cuz too many people will go there"
Kieran *******
Why do people get so upset by anonymous posts? I really don’t get it 🤷♂️
I couldn’t give a sh1t either way, I mean, who’s to say anyone’s name on fb isnt completely fabricated anyway
the things is that many many anonymous posts are likely to be fabricated f4ke posts by visa agents, old grumpy man, people that hate on DTV for various reasons. for example the elite holders that raged about it. or the retirees that worry about a young lad taking their bar girl now
found the old grumpy guy 🤣🤣🤣 dont worry you can keep Ploy.
The proof that everything i claim is correct is the fact that the nonsense that is beeing posted anonymously does not happen in real life. for example the entry denial for dtv holders or the re-check on financial documents or the cancellation of the visa by immigration officers. or the deportation and ban for missing a 90
then you got the backlash. while everyone knew that banks are not supposed to open an account for a dtv holder. that was common knowldge since july 2024. so i can see why people give you a hard time for that.
what a ridiculous and arrogant thing to say. Not everyone knew. He was trying to be helpful (I bet you have even read his comment) and there is never any need to be rude or have a go at people. Sad and pathetic you support trolls - you must be one.
exactly - what’s the difference. The advice doesn’t change if your name is Nick or Christopher. It’s beyond weird that you are obsessed with having to know people’s names on an advice forum 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Your profile is locked; it wouldn't be hard to ignore what others say and not get your feelings hurt. That's the real world for you: if you say it, then stand by what you say.
If you must know, my lawyers advised I do so for the time being. You can always shoot a friend request if you want to be nosy. I'm not hiding my face or my name. So are you for anonymous posting?
I am 100% for people having the choice. People have their reasons for doing so, many expressed in this thread. An answer or some advice doesn't change because someone is called Nick or Brad, and there are as many BS or troll comments from named people as anonymous people in all the Thai groups. In fact the worse ones are from named people as its a badge of honour for them to be a d**k and turn these groups into cesspits. You said you have reasons for blocking your profile and that's your business, you don't have to explain to anyone, but it is no different to most of the good people that post anonymously with genuine questions.
my profile is locked because of self entitled idiots that think they can gob off online without consequences, to message me privately to carry on their abuse, some people just need a good smack in the mouth.
