Hey guys im trying to apply for DTV and they ask me when i plan to arrive and leave. I wanna stay (obviously) for long term like 2-3 years at least. But i will leave Thailand for a short trip to Japan after 5 days after arriving to thailand. but after that i will return and stay there. What would be the smartest answer? Just say 5 days? i fiear that they might gimme just a normal tourist visa because its "enough" for the period of time. should i just say 4 Months? to make it look like im more in need of DTV than a TV? maybe some people who successfully applied to DTV and got approved and have similar situations can tell me :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a DTV visa, it's suggested to indicate a stay of around 4 to 6 months rather than stating an intention to stay for 2-3 years, as the DTV is typically issued for shorter periods. Concerns were raised about taking a short trip to Japan shortly after arriving in Thailand, but it seems that this does not significantly impact the application. Responses from the community advise ensuring that your stated length of stay reflects a realistic duration while allowing for eventual extensions in the future.

I'm not sure that anyone knows exactly how DTV will work and there seems to be no definitive answer yet The first 6 months are not up. Many Thai visa experts are confused. If you follow the objectives I have indicated above, it seems if you want to be in Thailand for 5 years you can get the visa, in 6 monthly renewals over 5 years subject to the approval of doing border runs and being absent from Thailand for over a set time i.e. 24 hours. Many Thai visa experts in Thailand are confused. It is not available inside Thailand so most Thais know nothing about it.

I would just put 150 days as once you have it and are in it’s obvious you can change plans.

You must leave every 180 days it is possible to get one extension 180 days but we’re waiting to see how it works

Exactly why I want it.

As you know, you can only stay in Thailand for 360 days on a DTV, so I would not put 2-3 years. Suggest somewhere between 4-6 months.

The DTV is supposed to be good for 5 years provided you leave and re-enter the country every 180 days and have an acceptable reason to apply for it outside Thailand at a Thai Consul or Embassy and proof of your intentions. That's how I read the instructions...So where did I go wrong? 5 years is the major reason why people want to obtain the DTV. It gives you some level of continuity for 5 years and you can be under 50y/o to apply. It is not a retirement visa. i.e. If you have evidence that you are a computer nerd working for a company outside Thailand you are likely to obtain that DTV. And likely pay Thai Tax.

Exactly correct. Unlike some advice given on FB.

Yes, I know all of that, but on the application it asks you when you believe you will enter and when you believe you will exit. Like you said, you either have to exit before 180 days or 360 days, if you get an extension. That would count as your next exit and is what you write on your application. You wouldn’t stay in Thailand for a full 5 years, so wouldn’t put a date five years later as your exit date.

You don't need to worry about the trip to Japan. 4 mths is fine to put.
