UPDATE ON MY POST BELOW.

Thanks for all the positive and helpful input. Except maybe for the comment on how I should spend my money in relation to new vehicles....LMAO

So, finally, my partner who is a higher level government employee was able to get time to go in and bat for me. What a sh*tshow...

1. The 50K baht transfer limit with Krung Thai Bank is set in stone for foreigners. Thank our scammer friends for that one. As an aside, I have a 1 Mil baht transfer limit in my Krungsri account.

2. I was finally able to get a cashier cheque for the amount.

3. I presented the cashier cheque ...made out to the dealership....to them. They rushed off to deposit it, and then proceeded to request immediate cash withdrawal. The bank apparently refused, and said the funds will only be available on Monday (This happened on Friday). The dealership then refused to deliver the car to me as per the arrangement. When I courteously insisted on cancelling my purchase, they suddenly decided to accept the validity of the cashier cheque. I presented them with my bank book and the cheque receipt from the bank. That was not enough...until I pushed back.

LESSONS:

1. In Isaan, language barrier will be omnipresent.

2. Due to the insane level of dishonesty and scamming in Thailand, foreigners should be prepared to be distrusted and over-scrutinised...especially where large sums of money are involved.

Thanks again for the input.

Original post:

Hi all

I am having an extraordinary amount of trouble finding an acceptable way to pay for a new car I am purchasing at a dealer in Udon Thani.

I have the money in my account. They only allow me a maximum transfer of 50K baht per day. Not an option....for obvious reasons.

They refuse to give me cash....not that I particularly want to walk around with that amount.

May I ask what the possible solution for this issue may be? In Australia, a simple bank transfer or bank cheque would suffice. This is not Australia, well aware of that.

Here, I am dealing with huge language barriers, and pushback.

Any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks heaps in advance....
Answer summary
The user experienced significant challenges purchasing a new car in Thailand due to heavy restrictions on bank transfers for foreigners, specifically a daily limit of 50,000 baht. After obtaining a cashier's cheque, complications arose during the payment process with the dealership, exacerbated by language barriers and distrust stemming from common scams in the region. The post highlights key lessons learned, including the necessity of navigating local banking rules and preparing for potential issues related to the payment process.

For those who say just change it in the app or that they transfered 1 million, how long ago was this? My experience is that K Bank changed policy last year to allow transfers up to
*****
per day. At that time I had two monthly rent payments to make, totalling over 50k, and I had to send one payment on the 30th and one payment on the 1st. Agent inside the Khon Kaen bank office told me this. She even called the call center and had them explain it to me in English. At that time they said it was for foreigners only.

Then three months ago my Thai partner sold a business she was running for 90k. The Thai buyer had to pay over two days, 45k per day. So at some banks at least, this policy has been extended to Thai people as well.

John Knox you’re not wrong. I went to the KBank branch last week after not being able to increase my limit on the app and they told me it’s not possible to increase it from 50k now. A bit annoying

Which bank? You should be able to do a transfer of minimum 500K or max 2 million. The 50K rule is not for transfers, how else did you deposit your money for you visa.

Go to the bank and ask them to remove the limit for a single purchase.

Just go to your branch, show them the car purchase papers, and can ask for a cashiers cheque, or a temporary lifting of your transfer limit. I did the cashiers cheque, one million smackeroonies easy as ... no need complcate a simple procedure
Jaco *****************

OP
TaupeRaspberry5284 Unfortunately, I am not the one complicating the procedure. Lets just say the the language barrier is causing barriers the bank may, or may not intend to be there...

Some years ago I bought a large plot of land (several rai) and paid with a bankers draft.

Haha. The seller looked at it. Didn't like it. "I want money."

I had to drive him to my bank for them to explain to him that the banker's cheque is better than money.

But yes, the short answer is a banker's cheque.

Tomas Arndt I have done the same. When I check it says I can transfer up to 2 mill per day. But when I tried to do it I was limited to 49.999 baht per day. When I asked the bank why, they told me the 2 mill limit only applies for thai citizen, foreigner is limited to below 50.000 baht per Day. Krung Thai bank.

You should be able to get a cashiers cheque from your bank assuming you have sufficient funds available
