it's not always easy. My son couldnt get British passport automatically. He had to take his father's US nationality. Now his son can't get USA passport.

I disagree a child should take the father's surname - especially if he doesn't have the foresight to marry her before carelessly impregating her. She's the one carrying it, birthing it, breastfeeding, with all the physical, hormonal and emotional repercussions, not to mention it's in her country. Not all countries grant citizenship automatically to people born on their soil (and for some it might be almost impossible for the Thai mother to get a visa), but I think most, if not all, grant it to the children regardless of where they are born, but sometimes the father needs to be married to pass his citizenship.

yep, if you are not married when the child is born, the child is a "bastard" (sorry for the GOT ref 🤣) and the mother have sole custody 100% how i know this, my wife have a son with a thai guy, before she met me. He had no say when she brought the son abroad even thou he sought legal advice to prevent it

I am the father of a Thai child and I am not married to my child’s mother.

However, my name is on both of the child’s birth certificates (Thai and the translated to English copy)

Also, my Thai child has USA citizenship but has never been to America (yet).

As for parental rights, you are correct in that the Thai government doesn’t recognize me as the father even though I have supported the mother and child for nearly 11 years now.

When I visit Thailand, I always do a visa exemption, and occasionally do a 30 day extension.

So far I haven’t needed to do any other types of visas because I usually just make one trip here per year.

Yes, I’ve done at least a dozen border runs (to Malaysia) over the years as well.

Obviously this is the most convenient way for me because I am in the southern area of Thailand near Hatyai.

you forgot that even with all that you mentioned if the mother doesn't write a letter and accompany you to immigration you will not get a visa based on having a child.
