hello my friend is thinking to overstay her visa by 2 days... can she just pay extra when he gets to the airport? is there a risk of a huge fine or worse?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Overstaying a visa in Thailand, even by just two days, is against the law and comes with significant risks. While it is possible to pay a fine of 500 baht per day at the airport, doing so could lead to serious consequences if caught by authorities before reaching the airport. The main concern is not just the overstay itself, but the potential repercussions if your friend is stopped for another reason and found to be overstaying. Advice from the community emphasizes the importance of respecting visa regulations and suggests applying for a visa extension instead of risking an overstay.

Let's keep ONE thing in mind. OVERSTAY IS ILLEGAL !!!
That's it in a nut shell, :/ Now what ever your excuse for overstaying is (and yes I'll call it an excuse because it's rarely a real reason) IF you're caught out on overstay before you get to the airport or the border to stamp out there can be serious ramifications.
My advice is; IF you can get an extension of stay (even the 7 day extension denied stamp) rather than getting an overstay DO IT. I would avoid an overstay stamp by any means if I could.
And I think on that note we're done ;)

As a general rule there is no issue with a short overstay and you can pay the fine of 500 baht a day at the airport.
With that being said, keep in mind overstaying is illegal. It's not so much the overstay that is a problem it's getting caught INSIDE the country for something else while on overstay that can run you off the rails.

I can confirm having speaking to people who got caught at checkpoint that police do not apply the laws for a few days.

Pon Thaeus the overstay banning penalties came into effect on March 20, 2016
i peruse a TON of thai related forums and travel groups every day, IF people were getting hassled for having an overstay stamp in their passport comin' back into thailand they'd have commented about it.
I would say until it starts popping up on the inter-web somewhere a LOT there is no issue (other than at the thai consulate in penang)..
Perhaps the word has not drifted back to our group, which is relatively small compared to the number of travelers affected...just saying there is no way to say for certain.

Robert A. Piccus seeing as many hundreds of people pay their overstay fines when they exit the country on a given day. And many of them re-enter as wekk we would have heard about it IF it was causing even a sporadic problem

....and just because there are no confirmed reports
, that is not correct. :/ There are no as in ZERO confirmed reports that a short overstay affects a person's ability to return to the country OR to get a visa at a thai consulate (other than from the Penang consulate).

Overstay is overstay......respect where you are. Expect no lenience if you disobey.....no sympathy. Why does she feel above the law?

Apply for an extension 1900 baht.. your friend does have this option.

IF she gets caught outside by the authorities on an overstay, she will be in boat loads of trouble.

If your friend makes his way to the airport, the fine will be 500 Thb a day overstay and an Overstay stamp in his passport. If your friend gets stopped by Police or any other official and the passport get checked during these days it is jail, judge, deportation on own costs and blacklist for 1 year.
