What should I do after being denied a Thai visa application in Hanoi?

Jan 15, 2026
Hey everyone! I just got denied after 4 days in Hanoi. Every requiremet met. I had 500k over 4months, soft power cooking class for 6months. I just also read that its happening to more people applying in Hanoi. What is my best route now, re apply in a different country? I suspect they might be rejecting due to a high volume of applicants…

They are not randomly rejecting or cancelling applications due to an increase in applications that is just ludicrous

I’m guessing something was wrong with your application and you’ll probably not find out what it was

Was your 500k something you put into an account specifically to get the visa? Was it an active account or an account that has 501,000 and no other activity? I own a Muay Thai gym (tiger eye) and I've got a lot of experience since the DTV was introduced and I am convinced that the number one factor by a long shot is the financial proof. And I think (this is all speculation btw but I think speculation that has been earned after seeing a lot of applicants) that simply meeting the minimum standard of financial proof is often not enough. Maybe sometimes it is, but you may get an embassy official wanting to be more strict in their assessment than others.

Of course that's not the only factor but I think it's the biggest. There are other factors such as a misspelling or other error in the application, etc but I think financial proof is by far the most important.

Soft options looking more unlikely to be approved, also 3-6 months, more likely to get a MEV instead. Check your application (screen shot every page) before submitting so you can cross reference for any obvious errors. What is your nationality?

Happened to me in November! I got rejected in Hanoi after waiting 2 weeks, I was not asked for any additional documents or anything. Submitted the same application in Paris and got approved. It is Soft Power 6 months cooking course with Arun Thaï Cooking School. But I heard from the school that for cooking class they recommend to take a longer engagement 6+months now to maximise your chances. Good luck!

Find the reason for denial - fix it and re-submit. It could be something as simple as not using the full name as appears on passport - is the school you planning to attend have DTV approval ?? Check with the schools ones who are approved for DTV usualy will have staff at the school to assist you with the application process - meaning filling out forms for you send them to you and you file at local embassy

What is DTV approval for a school? Is there an official list or certification?

check with the school that offers DTV and ask them their approval raiting. If a school is approved with DTV or ED visa they will usualy have a staff member dedicated to the application process that works for the school.

Meaning they will put the packet together for you then send it to you for you to file it with the embassy or you can upload documents on line via e-file which ever works better

I wish, but reports from consulates and border show inconsistent application of rules. Seems that if there are way too many DTVs they may pull the plug or change the rules. Hopefully for us already with visas nothing changes.

It just doesn't make much economic sense. From what I've seen the DTV holders are definitely not from the affluent class in the west, they have limited spending power. The current DTV visa cost is a real bargain, I think most are prepared to spend more if required. Not long ago as far as I remember the Elite for 5 years was 500k, compare this to DTV which is around 12k in Australia.

they might stop the whole DTV thing, or they might not. No one knows for sure as of now. They just started it recently, and I personally haven't read anything saying they are planning to stop it anytime soon (and even if they do, it wouldn't affect those who already got their DTV anyway, at least for its initial duration). The DTV is one of the post-Covid 'remedies' made to attract more foreigners - and their funds - to Thailand, and it's being quite successful at that. Yes, there are abuses, as for any other visas, be it ED or else, but those using this visa for legitimate reasons and following the official rules should have nothing to worry about. And I hope they keep cracking down on all those using it for purposes other than its original / official ones.

lol, source? I own multiple estate properties in my home country, and have been living with this passive income here for years. I previously had an Elite visa that costs way, way more than the DTV. I own my condo here as well, and I believe I easily spend at least as much as any 'average Joe' doing any remote work here. And there are probably plenty of other DTVers doing the same, using soft power classes, simply because they can.

Ah yes, it's inexplicable why they trim down the soft power?

"Thailand is clamping down on "soft power" visa abuse, like the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and Education (ED) visas, because people are misusing them for long-term stays and illegal work, bypassing proper visas, which strains resources, creates security risks (like scam centers), and undermines legitimate long-term residency programs. The focus is on stopping fraud, ensuring genuine tourists/workers, and preventing foreign criminals from exploiting loopholes, leading to increased scrutiny on repeated border runs and questionable activities under these visas"

First, this isn't an official government press release. Then, this article simply mentions the fact that Thai immigration cracks down on border runs, which is nothing new and it does not affect DTVers anyway.

Propagating unverified / non-official information is not helping anyone in this group. Moreover, your 'unofficial' source says that most visas are being under scrutiny, including ED and DTV, and BOTH remote worker and SP applicants are concerned. It's not just Soft Power applicants, and not DTVers only. Immigration officers are just doing their job... This kind of article brings nothing new to the table, except some fearmongering titles for those clicks.

yeah, whatever you want to believe. But what I do believe is that BOTH the crackdown on visa runs AND on non-legit bank accounts was mainly triggered by the abuse done by some Chinese mafia and Asian groups of scammers operating in the country. As of now, it's perfectly legit to get a DTV for Soft Power activities, and it was actually made for this very purpose.

And the other way to get this visa is even cheaper! Simply showing some portfolio or company documents allowing you to work remotely from Thailand can grant you the DTV, which means even less money spent by each applicant for that visa, lol.
