I have applied for LTR visa under pensioners category. The folks at Thai Board of Investment are unwilling to accept balance in the money market fund with Fidelity and asking me to provide proof of Thai insurance with minimum coverage of $50K. I am seeking your suggestion for the cheapest health insurance provider acceptabtle for visa purpose. I am looking for the cheapest one as my current insurance coverage will continue indefinitely and I don’t want to pay for expensive coverage when I already have one.

Also if I get the coverage, can it be from a future date as I don’t plan to move to Thailand until November. Those who have got OA visa from US may know this as they may have obtained health insurance. Thank you all!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is applying for an LTR visa in Thailand under the pensioners category but is facing challenges with insurance requirements. The Thai Board of Investment requires proof of at least $50,000 in health insurance coverage, and the user is seeking the cheapest options available. Several commenters suggest options including AXA and MSIG insurance, which are known to be acceptably priced for visa purposes. There are discussions around the timeline for obtaining insurance and moving to Thailand, along with different personal experiences related to insurance and visa applications.

I came over in February with a one way ticket for retirement I got 60 days on arrival, I am 69 and don't need any insurance policy, I have my own house here and I just went to my local immigration office in sisaket and got an extension for one month, then I went back 15 days before it expires and got three months the immigration officer said that they will give 12 months next time I apply it cost 2000 baht each time you apply for visa, I have 800,000 baht in my thai account and my pension that's all

With respect to financials, the BOI needs to see a yearly income if at least $80,000 I was able to do this by investing in a special retirement annuity that paid out immediately and provided a certificate which BOI accepted.

As a word of caution, it took 8 months to obtain our LTR’s as the BOI kept requiring additional information including attested proof that my wife and I were still married (I chose the sponsorship route to minimise the income requirement)

Why is your current insurance not usable for that?

I had to get a new one because Swiss insurances can’t be used once I deregistered in Switzerland. So I got an expensive one with coverage even for a heart transplant (better safe than sorry).

May I ask if BOI rejected a Fidelity Investment account with CASH balance of more than $100k over 12 months of period even though the CASH has never been used to purchase any company shares ? If yes it is very strange because these CASH balance fetch more than 5% interest, better than a bank savings account.

, you are right but they refuse to accept it as liquid. They only want an account which is marked as savings account. I transferred the funds to my Fidelity checking account to prove that money market funds are liquid as cash but that won’t be acceptable either. I am now going for the easy option to buy insurance to avoid back and forth.

insurance doesn't avoid the need to prove passive income for the Wealthy Pensioner LTR. You need both.

@Jo**
, passive income was never an issue for me. BOI wanted $100,000 in savings account instead of the money market funds I had in Fidelity account to avoid the need of health insurance

maybe a good option.... As you state you only need this insurance for your visa therefore you can increase the excess to significantly reduce the cost.

The cheapest insurance for OA visa is AXA, can buy directly online, not need to go to an agent.

, spot on! I am 80 and mist insurers not interested. I got good cover exceeding LTR requirements at a reasonable cost, all on-line and with direct conversations with an actuary to discuss medical results which I volunteered in the spirit of transparency.

Why are you applying for a visa now if you plan to move in November? You're going to be wasting many months of the visa. Once you're approved you only have a limited amount of time to obtain the visa before the approval letter expires. And you cannot get the visa without the insurance.

And the non-OA insurance has nothing to do with LTR. The non-OA has a $100,000 minimum and must be from a specific list of Thai insurance carriers. The LTR insurance does not have to be that much and also does not have to be from that list.

, I will have 60 days after BOI approval to apply for Visa and that will be in the timeframe I plan to move

Insurance requirement for LTR is $50K as I noted in my post. It can be from the specific list you are referring to so I am looking for advice from those who obtained insurance for non-OA visa from US

@Bipin ******
those companies are all overinflated because they have a captive customer base. Find your own cheapest insurance possible to meet the requirement.
