My spouse ( common law) are planning to come on the new DTV visa but I have some questions hopefully someone can help with.

1)How far in advance do I need to apply,

2) is there a certain amount of time the 500,000 needs to be in my account when showing our bank statements

3) I am self employed and have a business I can run from anywhere so how would I need to show proof of this and that I don’t work for someone else?

4)

And would I need to reapply for this visa every 180 days or how does that work?

Thank you for your help in advance ☺️

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is inquiring about the DTV visa for themselves and their common law spouse, seeking clarification on application timing, financial requirements, proof of self-employment, and visa extension rules. Key responses indicate that common law relationships are not recognized in Thailand, necessitating individual applications. Financial requirements include maintaining 500,000 baht in each applicant's bank account, with specifics on whether the funds need to be seasoned. It is advised to apply no more than three months before arrival and clarified that the DTV visa allows for an initial 180-day stay which can be extended once for another 180 days, after which the visa needs to be renewed through exit and re-entry.

For #3, I also have my own LLC that I used to get approved for the DTV visa. I presented the following documents: articles of incorporation (this was the LLC registration document that was created after I registered my LLC in the state of Florida) , a signed letter from my partner allowing me to work remotely, and my partnership agreement. If you don't have a partner, then last 2 documents are irrelevant for you.

Re point 3, I wrote a document in the third person with screenshots of my company registration, business website and overview of how I make money e.g. "...meaning the business and work required is completely remote and run by Emma as she travels the world as a digital nomad."

ONE warning people.

This is the Thai VISA advice group.

It is not a group to talk about the thai taxation of foreigners. You wanna chew the fat on that go post on a group related to where you live in thailand

Only way you can piggyback on another visa if you're legally married.

Thailand now also recognizes LGBTQ marriages since this year too if that helps
James ********
@Barry *****
not yet approved LGBTQ marriages .

A common law relationship is not recognised in Thailand. If you are not married you would need to apply as individuals each meeting all of the requirements of the DTV. So 500k baht in each bank account, each showing they meet the reasons they apply under etc

Apply 3 months ahead or less.. don't apply if planned arrival is more than 3 months ahead. You will most likely be told to apply closer to arrival. They might want to see a purchased plane ticket like in my case.

The visa is valid for 5 years, multi-entry, you can extend in country once for 180 days, after that you would need to leave and re-enter.
Tod *********
Sorry
@Angelica *************
you are not correct,

EACH 180 day entry stamp on the DTV can be extended just ONE time giving you a total of 360 days in country

THEN you have to exit and re-enter to get a new 180 day entry stamp.

That is how the rule is written in thai for how that visa works

I have so far understood that the visa is one 180 days + 180 days extension, after which the visa is finished, no? Meaning, after 12 months, you would have to apply for a new visa, with the included costs. Not that the same visa is active for 5 years and just needs some border runs. Anyone who knows better, correct me. Thanks
Tod *********
@Harri *******
you misunderstand almost completely

The visa is VALID for FIVE years it is multiple entry, you get 180 days when you enter, you can extend that one time for 180 days at the immigration office. Giving you 360 days total IN country, then you have to exit/re-enter to get a new 180 day stamp.

people have already gotten the DTV, came in, got 180 days, exited, came back and got a new 180 day stamp, exited, came back and got a new 180 day stamp (I know someone who has exited/re-enter FOUR times since he got the DTV and every entry he was stamped in for a new 180 days)

here is an image of the visa validity from a DTV just issued showing the date it was issued, that it's multiple entry and the date the visa is good for

believe me it IS a visa valid for FIVE YEARS

@Tod ********
Thanks Tod. That sounds great, to have a 5 year visa with some exits after a while.

@Harri *******
it is indeed a crazy long visa, that gives a crazy long entry stamp every time you come into the country on it while the visa is valid

@Lloyd *******
can this part be explained in more detail to me.

So we can come for 180 days then apply to extend that for another 180 and after that we need to leave and come back.

Do we need to reapply for the same visa again each time we leave and can you extend it each time you come back before having to leave again or once you do it once you can never do it again in that 5 years and can only stay for 180 ?

Hopefully that makes sense
Tod *********
@Kaitlyn ********
the visa is valid for 5 years, it's multiple entry (meaning you can enter thailand as many times as you want to during the validity of the visa), each entry gets you stamped in for 180 days.

You can extend each 180 day entry stamp ONE time for 180 additional days at the immigration office where you stay in thailand. Once that extension runs out you exit/re-enter the country and get a NEW 180 day entry stamp (which you can extend again at the immigration office if you want to

There is nothing that makes you take the 180 day extension on each entry you could just enter, get 180 days, then exit/re-enter and get a new 180 day entry stamp without ever getting the extension

Wait and see what people say about the extension <- this DTV is just over 8 weeks old and NO ONE has gotten an extension on an entry stamp yet

I'd say take it a step at a time, you're getting WAY ahead of yourself.

Get the visa, come to thailand get the 180 day stamp

thank you so much for explaining more for me ☺️

the taxation thing has not happened yet and no-one knows how it will be implemented, but it is 180 days in any year, so leaving and coming back will not 'reset' the 180 days count.
Lloyd ********
Check with where you are applying as to if the 500k needs to be seasoned.

@Lloyd *******
maybe silly question but do I not just apply online? Sorry I’ve travelled

To Mexico and Dominican and it’s all done online so just want to check
Jonas *************
@Kaitlyn ********
I I think you apply at a specific office in a specific country and they process it.

At least for the DTV Visa each country are differently stringent and may or may not take people who are non-residents.
Graham ******
@Kaitlyn ********
it is done mainly online but the Embassy/Consulate where you are will be setting the requirements and doing the approval
John **********
@Kaitlyn ********
depends where you are
Lloyd ********
Firstly, 'common law' spouses are not recognised in Thailand. Apply as far in advance as you deem necessary, that will all depend on the turn-around time at the location you apply for the visa.
