TLDR : Answer Summary
UK passport holders do not need to apply for a visa prior to traveling to Vietnam for short stays, as they can enter visa-free for up to 45 days. There has been some confusion regarding the need for a visa on arrival, but it has been clarified that British citizens can simply get their passport stamped upon arrival without any prior visa arrangements.

The visa "on arrival" has to be organised in advance. Allow at least 7 days.

I worked offshore in Vietnam in 2000. Flew from Bangkok, didn't need a visa although it took a bit of time getting through immigration.
