Can I extend my DTV visa without an active remote project or should I do a border run?

Jan 30, 2025
Hi everyone, I have been here on DTV since September and I got the visa because of a remote opportunity I had at that time. The project has ended now but I still meet the funding requirement set by DTV. Now, I need to either extend my 180 day stay or do a border run. Does anyone know if not having a remote project will cause any issue at the immigration? Both land and air travel because its likely that I will visit Cambodia

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about what to do now that their remote project has ended while holding a DTV visa. They are considering either extending their stay or doing a border run but are concerned about the potential implications of not having an active remote project. Comments suggest that while a border run may be the simplest option, extending the visa might require presenting the original work-related documentation, leading some to recommend finding a new remote job quickly.

I think you can showcase you work portfolio, at least for the application process. However if they require an active contract to extend in country, then that would be a bit hard, and a border bounce might be the easier option.

It doesn't have to be a remote project. But the non remote project cannot be in Thailand obviously

There is a lot of people who do seasonal contract work then have downtime for 6 months. Nice work life balance too

Isn't this a bit overdone?

He still has a valid visa. Nowhere is stated that the visa becomes invalid the moment your remote project ends.

A certain time between projects is normal I think.

He is in the same position as those of us on soft power and the course has finished. To extend in country he needs proof or just do a border bounce for a new 180 day stamp.

yes, that is correct, but for a border bounce with a valid multi-entry visa you should not need an agent.

He doesn't need an agent. However it sounds like he suffers from anxiety so using an agent might be best for him.

If you are not comfortable, I recommend doing it through an agent. I have recommendations. Inbox me.

If you plan ahead you can get a return flight to Vietnam for 4000bht. Spend the night or two. Better than giving 6500+ to sit in a bus going to the border

Just do a border run. Extension is going to require you show all the same requirements as before.

if you already have this visa I wouldn't think you'd be required to present all the documentation you submitted to obtain it. When the visa expires I would understand you'd need to reapply and show evidence again.

Bounce out/in is your best option I think. Gives you another 180 days, then another bounce, gives you a year to get something else together.

Use an agency and do a same day border run if you're worried about being asked. Even though it's highly unlikely.

The OP is worried about being questioned on re entry. They are no longer working remotely.

You'll need to show the workation-related documents again if you apply for an extension in Thailand. This gives you an idea of what immigration might request if they start checking at the border. For now, that’s not the case, but never say never in Thailand—people are already being questioned about their activities. Best would be for you to find a new remote job as soon as possible to fullfil your initial visa purposes.

Is there any other way instead of showing the remote work? I can also register for Thai language or Muay Thai classes

Anonymous participant I'm not quite sure how to proceed with the move (do you need to change the DTV purpose somewhere?). Yes, you can do so, but the process would be similar. You'll need an ongoing activity for the extension in Thailand (confirmed) and possibly the same if they decide to scrutinize it more closely at the border.

I believe you are overthinking it. True, with the work gone, you might have issues extending. An agent might help you find the most benevolent immigration office and/or have already some experience with a case like yours.

If you want to be cheap, just go to the nearest immigration office and ask for yourself. Remember: you did nothing wrong and just want to keep enjoying Thailand. They should be supportive if you have funds.

Doing nothing wrong and continuing to enjoy Thailand applies to most people! But not a reason for extension of stay. He's better off doing a border bounce whilst he looks at options

Anonymous participant just leave and return. You have a five year visa. You only run into problems if you try to extend it inside Thailand. Just border bounce for five years, and you are fine. They only check things if you try to extend it.
