I’m new to Visas but I wanted to share my first niiave experiences. I’m from the UK and applied for a 6 month METV e-visa online from the Thai embassy in London. For anyone that doesn’t know, the Multiple Entry visa only allows you to stay in Thailand for 60 days at a time but allows re entry as many times as you want. It was granted within a week so I travelled to Thailand in March. I did my first border run in May with 1 day to spare. I drove to Nakhon Thanom to the friendship 3 bridge to Laos. I was expecting to walk over the 1km bridge, get my passport stamped and walk back! Instead I spent 2 hours waiting on the Thai side and filling in forms and waiting for the government bus which is the only way to cross the bridge. I then found that I had to buy a 1 day visa in Laos for 1800bht and do some more form filling. I then had to wait for 3 hours in the sun for the return bus. So the whole trip took most of the day and lots of wasted time waiting.

My next 60 days aren’t up until next week and I’m in Chiang Rai currently so I took a sightseeing trip to Tachileik today and I thought I’d take my passport and paperwork and try the border while I was there. I’ve read on here that Myanmar is closed for border runs due to the civil war. I can confirm that it is closed and they won’t allow foreigners to cross for any purpose. But I drove along to the Golden Triangle (for those that don’t know it’s the joining of borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand on the Mekong river). I noticed that there is a ferry to Laos for the new Golden Triangle City (casino goers mainly!). So I walked into the immigration office to find out about it and to my surprise they stamped me straight out and I paid 70bht for a very nice Thai longboat crossing and was stamped into Laos with another day visa (2000bht). I wandered around the new Chinese City of hotels and casinos and crossed back with no problems. I had to fill in the immigration form at both sides but it was quick, easy and relatively cheap and no waiting. It was also a pleasant day trip. So anyone looking for a pleasant border run in the north of Thailand, I would very highly recommend it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares their experiences with a 6-month METV e-visa, detailing the process of performing a border run from Thailand to Laos. After initially struggling at a different border due to excessive waiting, they successfully crossed into Laos via a longboat from the Golden Triangle City, finding it to be a pleasant and efficient trip. The comments offer additional advice on visa extensions and border run strategies, including options for extending stays in Thailand and clarifications about visa rules.

You should cross Myanmar. Always best to do border runs with a war torn country.

I tried Tony, they won’t let any foreigners cross. I tried the Tachileik border which is the safest evidently.

nope, that’s only for visa exemption, does not apply to METV 😉

@Jennifer ***
this is incorrect. You can only do 2 land border entries visa exempt, meaning without any visa. There's no limitation to how many times you can enter at a land border if you have a visa.

oh mannn. Stand corrected. I will delete this. I was counting my land border exits for years 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just confirm it is correct

Great hint - but u can do extensions - please provide a location link for that border crossing you did.

Why would you leave after 60 days? Do the 30 day extension for 1900 baht at immigration office 😉 each entry gets you 90 days if we include extension

Also Chong mek is a much easier border to bounce. But yes off course you have to get the voa in Laos

thanks Brandon. I read that if I took a 30 day extension during the visa, that it would void the rest of the visa?I was planning to do the last 60 days at the end as you say, then the 30 day extension, but not until then.
Brandon ************
@Andrew ******
not sure where you read that but it wouldn't have invalidated your visa. But now you know.

@Andrew ******
that’s not true.

Maximise your stay and extend every 60 day entry by 30 days at Thai immigration then leave and re-enter for your next 60 day stamp.

Can I activate my single entry 90 day visa if it cones been waiting since 21st June I m in Los still no visa
Brandon ************
@John *********
yes but if you're in Thailand when it comes you'll need to leave and enter again to activate it

It's a little late to help you now but you could have applied for a 30 day extension for both of your entries. It won't benefit you now because if you want to maximize your time from the visa you're going to want to do a final border bounce just before the visa expires.

Don't confuse your stamp date with the visa expiration date. You're allowed to stay until the stamp you just received, but you won't be able to use your visa again past the date on the visa itself. So look at that date on the visa and if you leave Thailand and return one more time right before that date you'll get a final 60 days and then you can apply for a 30 day extension. So you'll be able to get about 9 months total if you're trying to maximize it.
