TLDR : Answer Summary
Overstaying a visa in Thailand, even by just 2 days, can lead to various consequences. Generally, if you reach the airport, you'll likely pay a fine of about 1000 baht and receive an overstay stamp in your passport. However, if you're caught by immigration or police before reaching the airport, you may face arrest, detention, and a potential ban from re-entering Thailand for several years. While many expats report minimal issues with short overstays, it poses risks, particularly if you interact with law enforcement. It's recommended to avoid overstaying, seek visa extensions where possible, and follow immigration laws to prevent complications in future visits.

Well, can you explain why they change the visa laws every 6 months and never are clear on what has changed? They want all of china and India to come for 10 days spend all their money then leave. People who want to live here jump through more hoops every year

You should never go on overstay if you can avoid it.

Although it's unlikely with only some days, if you have any interaction with the police (random traffic checkpoint, car with facial recognition camera

or even following a workshop where they check the teacher) while you're even on one day overstay, you can be arrested, taken to deportation jail, and held there until your flight (which has to be a direct one to your home country at your own expenses). Even with one day overstay you'll be banned from Thailand for 5 years when caught.

If you get to the airport then you'll pay a fine (500 per day) and receive an overstay stamp in your passport. An overstay stamp could potentially affect your ability to purchase a visa to another country or enter another country or Thailand in the future.

there are no cases as it would be bad for business. Which is a great thing. The lineups for overstay fines at BKK are often big. Overstay is never a great idea but it all. But it happens daily and the fines are appropriate. I just thank the officers for another amazing stay and pay my fine. Good revenue for them. And everyone leaves happy

if they catch you… and if they arrest you…. And if they prosecute you. And you are found guilty…

Can you find the case history of this EVER occurring? And can you imagine why a country like Thailand would be interesting in doing any or the above?

If you plan to return, I would advice against it because you'll get a mark stating you over stayed in your visa and every time you enter Thailand or go to immigration, they will ask about it and use it as a means to extort you.

Not based on my own experience Stuart. In my old passport I had one overstay just a day late because I was changing jobs and wasn't able to exit quickly in the province I was based in at the time. After that overstay note made in my passport by immigration, they always asked about it when I had to check in to immigration or re-entered. Generally it's a simple explanation that will satisfy the officer but from time to time they would suggest they can't issue the new extension because of an overstay, 'unless I paid a fine' that was obviisuly a bribe.

I must have had overstay at least 10 times in last 20 yrs, never more than 2 days and never ever been mentioned at immigration. Maybe you were just unlucky 🤷

Yeah I got scammed only once in Phuket but lucky for me the ATM didn't have the 20K they were asking me to pull out of it so I got off with a small "fine" to "help" me avoid the trouble. Although you were lucky, others may not and one still shouldn't oversay because eventually you may run into the wrong immigration officer and or cop.

The immigratio does not care much of your overstay. Just pay 500THB per day and getting a special stamp on the passaport. Nothing serious

Instead, if the Police catches you in overstay, regardless it is 1 day or 1 year, you are considered a criminal and might be treathed accordingly. (It's a matter of luck on what can happen nevertheless, if you are involved in an accident or whatever issue, the situation will definitely getting worse.

No big deal pay fine and leave unless you are stopping and arrested then anywhere from 2 weeks to a month sleeping on the floor in the detection center and then deported back to your own country and banned from Re-Entry into Thailand for the next 5 years. $ 1000 baht at the airport or 1900 baht at immigration to extend your stay for the remaining time before your flight out. Up too you as they say in Thailand but they have check stops out all over the place very risky if you ask me.

yes, but if you get involved with police for any reason like accident, checkpoint for alcool or whatever then big troubles start same for only 2 days

Sure not the immigration at airport or land border, then you get only a small fine and a red stamp ( red stamp no more elite visa)🙏🏻

overstay can cause many problems if it wants to and yes other countries can look at overstay from other countries if they wish. It’s simply not worth it. I’ve done it and caused me anxiety everytime the IO officer used to question me when I arrived. I ended up buying a new passport so it wasn’t visible and never got questioned again 🤣🤣

the anxiety would kill me as well. I don’t know why the OP just doesn’t get an extension. He’s gonna have to pay ฿1000 fine. The extension is only 1900 so he’s only out 900 for the two extra days. Well worth it in my opinion.
