What are the challenges of teaching English in Thailand as a foreigner?

ORIGINAL POSTER
Warning for those considering teaching English in Thailand: Your experience may change based on your skin color and appearance. If you're a blonde female with white skin from a native English-speaking country, you'll enjoy working for Thai people. They'll praise you for your looks. Otherwise, things may not go well for you. Thailand has cultural rules that don't make sense, and you have to follow their system. If you work for agencies, they will lie to you. Since the school knows you're through agencies, they may fire you based on how they feel. If you bring common-sense ideas, someone will notice, and you'll be fired. You'll lose your deposit on your apartment and have to move to another school or commute long distances.

When people talk about Thailand, they mention how perfect everything is, how amazing Thai food is, and how friendly Thai people are. However, Thai food is bad for health because it contains a lot of sugar and MSG. Thailand's laws are for Thai people only. As a foreigner, you're just a cash machine. Everything, from opening a bank account to getting visas, is confusing and has long, complicated steps. Thailand doesn't want foreigners to live there. They want you to spend money and leave.

Most male foreigners you meet in Thailand are of a certain type, born in a soft lifestyle, especially in South Asia, mostly in Thailand. Since no one corrects their behavior, they fight to stay there. Thai people aren't actually friendly; they lack social skills and common sense. They fake a smile in front of you, then gossip about you behind your back. That's why you never find fit, masculine foreigners in Thailand. Living in Thailand might make you lose your sanity.

Thai people are often perceived to have a significantly lower IQ, comparable to a 5-year-old child with Down syndrome. It's not uncommon to encounter individuals who struggle with basic tasks and seem entirely clueless about various aspects of life when in Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A poster warns potential English teachers in Thailand about the challenges they may face, including adverse experiences linked to skin color and appearance. They share feelings of being marginalized and express frustrations about cultural norms, employment attitudes, and navigating the visa process. The discussion is filled with mixed reactions from the community, with some validating the OP's concerns while others criticize their generalizations and attitude toward Thai culture. Many comments emphasize the need for adaptation and respect for cultural differences, highlighting that experiences can greatly vary among expats.

Are you fluent in Thai?

Can you read it?

Why not?

Is it because you have low IQ?

Do you speak with Thai people in Thai?

Why not?

Why do you expect them to speak in English?

There's more than a hint of racism here.

Try mixing with high IQ Thai people like in the FCCT.

Discuss social, economic, political issues. Analyse and debate political issues with Thai people.

There are no facts or evidence to support your statement.

Only unsubstantiated opinion.

Obviously you don't even know what IQ is.

The Thailand government recently complained about low IQ in Thailand. IQ has been tested globally for many decades now & the results are available online. Google is your friend.

You show your intelligence level by mentioning that there are intelligent people in Thailand as if saying you know a tall Thai & therefore it disproves that most Thais are short compared to most of the global population. Nobody has said that there are no intelligent people in Thailand, & you show your misunderstanding of the fact that IQ in a country is a general average, not that each person has that IQ exactly. The average IQ is low in Thailand though. It's just the way it is. It helps to improve things when you are honest & I would hope all people here wish the best for Thailand & Thai people. Would you hate your brother if he had a lower IQ than you? Pretty odd you cry "racism". If anything I respect those decent Thai people who are intelligent & honest with the challenging work they have to lift up their people to a better life.

In the West the decent intelligent people have obviously failed. Western governments definitely don't care one bit about their own people.

Thanks for alerting me to this.

2023 IQ Scores:

Thailand is ahead of several countries in Europe:

Montenegro, Romania, Bosnia, Macedonia, Georgia, Armenia, Albania.

And ahead of several ASEAN countries:

Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei Laos, Timor Leste.

World Average Score: 82.

Thailand: 89.

The average score is not 100 as is often believed.

Source: Google - Average IQ by Country 2023 - World Population Review.

See also Thai PBS 2022:

Thai IQ Levels on the Rise.

Other considerations:

1. Who took the tests?

PISA and similar tests survey kids in state schools.

But Thailand has a high percentage attending International Schools so those potentially achieving the highest scores are not included, lowering the score.

2. There is controversy surrounding the idea of accurately measuring Intelligence.

What are the tests measuring?

Verbal Intelligence?

Numerical Intelligence?

Practical Intelligence?

Reasoning Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence?

Spatial Intelligence?

Ability to follow or create a logical and reasoned argument?

Ability to compare and assess contrasting views or information?

3. It is held that non-verbal IQ tests featuring shapes, patterns, and sequences are measuring a specific ability, Spatial Intelligence, and cannot be generalised to suggest overall Intelligence.

They are invalid.

And practice increases your score, revealing a basic flaw.

A genuine Intelligence test must cover a wider range.

4. Motivation.

How motivated are the students to do the test?

If you think it's boring or pointless you don't apply yourself.

Your score goes down.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to alert me to this.

A more pressing issue is Thailand's PISA scores.

This requires serious government review of teaching aims and range of methods used, Singapore being a model.

@Kevin ********
It should be pretty obvious that the majority of natives in the region have a low IQ. I could see that easily in my first day here. The evidence is everywhere.

Yes, IQ testing measures certain types of intelligence. It is accurate in what it measures.

I know a number of professional Thais who are very competent who acknowledge this difficult issue for the country.

From what I've seen, a lot of the ruling class of Thais look down on the rest of their citizens & use general low IQ as a justification for nepotism, corruption, etc... which really holds the country back as obviously not all poor or middle class Thais have low IQ, & not all ruling class Thais have high IQ.

At first living abroad is like a vacation - everything is amazing and cheap, and the people are so nice. Then you begin to realize that it's not all what it seems and they start to get under your skin. Things that should be easy are impossibly difficult. If only they would do things the "right way". A lot of expats give up here and move. But if you can make your peace with the differences, figure out where to fit in and accept what you can't change, you discover that your experience closely matches what you make of it.

Possibly, or you may just not be used to the Thai way of describing people. They don't mess around with politically correct ways of describing you; if you're fat, then they describe you as fat, if you're Black, then you'll get described as Black; if you're not conventionally 'good looking', they will call you ugly ... It's not a criticism, it's a description, minus the political correctness.

Something you need to get used to ... They aren't 'judging' you, they are honestly describing you.
Dirk **************
I believe it is important to consider a more nuanced view than the OP. Adapting to different workplace norms and cultures is part of working abroad, and many foreign teachers in Thailand report positive experiences, highlighting the welcoming nature of Thai schools and communities. Thai cuisine, known for its diversity, offers both healthy and indulgent (aka unhealthy) options. The use of sugar and MSG is not unique to Thai cooking, and many people appreciate Thai food for its variety and flavor. Living in a foreign country often involves learning new legal and bureaucratic processes, a common aspect of the expatriate experience worldwide. It's unfair and inaccurate to stereotype a whole population based on your limited experiences; Thailand is known for its hospitality and warm social interactions. Addressing racial and gender biases is important, but it's not representative or fair to paint any country with a broad brush based on these biases. Prospective teachers should seek out a variety of perspectives and approach such opportunities with openness and a willingness to embrace a new culture.

I taught for a couple of years. There were headaches, I was not treated fairly, there were most definitely teachers who were better than me. The food sucked and I had to be at school on time in the mornings, I had to grade homework and wear nice clothes, blah blah blah.

All-in-all, the experienced sucked (yes even for fair skinned people), but it was worth while and I would do it again, if for no other reason than experience, culture exchange, to give back to my host community..

Wow, this is the most racist comment I have read on FB in a looong while. Are there Thais in the group? No one complaining to FB? To the OP: Thailand is for Thai people, they don’t need immigrants like Europe, USA, Canada etc as their demographic situation is still strong enough. They don’t want your culture, your “common sense”, your telling them how to run their own business, how to smile and how cook their own food (you can also cook your own). Has someone forced you to come here? It’s funny how you came into a country of people”with lower IQ compared to 5 years old with Down syndrome” in hopes to get a job and actually make living while the only “skill” you can offer is English language (and you are not even a blond). It certainly looks like someone has a very Low IQ, but they are not Thai

I assume that you have taught English in Thailand and had a bad experience. If so, you need to learn that paragraphs need to be organized and run-on sentences aren’t acceptable. Nobody likes reading a wall of text, especially when it’s hateful and racist.

I found your random hate of MSG especially random and unrelated. I would have left that out of your ‘dissertation’. It doesn’t pertain at all to the horrible point that you’re trying to make.

Based on your tirade and the way it’s been written, I don’t think you should be teaching anyone the English language, bruh.

I’m a “qualified teacher” (Master’s degree) who did a year in Thailand. Yes, a key reason why I left to teach in Japan was the crazy bureaucracy at all levels. But I never got the impression that it was caused by racism. Thai people have to deal with the same whenever they deal with the government.

And Thai people suffer indirectly from the red tape with visas and schools and agencies. Since people with options are put off teaching in Thailand, schools frequently have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get anyone in the classroom at all. Thai students lose out when they have to learn from alcoholic sexpats who are only teaching because they can’t do anything else. You complain about foreign men in Thailand, but you don’t really have to associate with or rely on those kinds of people if you don’t want to.

Since Thai schools are so desperate for teachers that they’re willing to keep such lowlifes (absolutely nothing against boozing and whoring, but please don’t do it when you have people relying on you the next morning), it’s hard for me to believe that teachers get fired for suggesting common-sense ideas. Ignored yes, but fired?

Actually given what I saw foreign teachers put the agencies and schools through, I can’t blame them for becoming jaded with foreigners. And I didn’t really see much prejudice against foreigners anywhere else in Thailand.

The same goes for gossip: I never saw Thais gossip more about foreigners than they did about each other.

You talk about feeling like Thai people are stupider, but remember that foreigners in Thailand are a select group who inherently have broader horizons than most. There are lots of dumb and narrow-minded people in every country I’ve visited, including my home country of Australia.

And as for sugar in the food: I personally like my som tam and fruit shakes with on sugar, and it was the easiest thing in the world to ask the sellers not to put it in.

Even though I can’t see myself working in Thailand again, I’m glad I got the chance to experience it, because I got to see a side of life I otherwise never would have got to see. And I still like the place and enjoy visiting from time to time.

I'm a 16 years old Thai girl that has been to 17 countries around the world and have always been interested in other cultures, I never expected any country I'm travelling to to be perfect. Every country has its own goods and bads, so as Thailand. In the school I'm studying in (an international school in bkk), everyone respects other's cultures, black friends and teachers are loved and treated as equally as other colored skin. I do understand what you meant by racism in Thailand, you've probably met many stupid people here but that doesn't mean all Thai people are as bad as those few groups of people you went through. I don't think generalising a country by only the people you've met is a good thing. Sorry if you left Thailand feeling bad, it's life, I hope you'd move on soon and become happier as a human being. John Ibis Sorry, I didn't make it clear, I was learning at the international school but when I reached the required age (16) I decided to quit school and took GED (it's quite common among international students here in Thailand right now). If u don't know what it is, it's basically a test to certify people that they have passed 4 main lessons taught in school and we would get a high school diploma for it. So... I had approximately a year to do things I wanted to try out stuff (like a gap year to discover myself and applying for university and play around lol). For the question, I casually asked the hotel if I could help them with tourists with my languages without the need to pay me and they agreed (it is legal if the child is 15 or above but they had to sign papers and there are requirements we have to follow. I inserted a pic from google but unfortunately it's all in Thai😥) but lastly they still give me some money and other treats to thank. Oh and for the nurse aid internship, I took a course on this (they only needed a high school diploma to enter) and they made everyone intern at a hospital of choice:) I am now studying in a science international course at Chulalongkorn university, 1st term, and there are also many other GED students who are my age in the course (most of them are international kids). Oh lastly, I get to go to many countries because my dad works at many places around the world. I'd say it's a normal thing in the international kids society too coz many friends of mine have been to more places than I did`:0 Thank you for your kind respond though 😊 I appreciate it.
Andi ***********
John Ibis I'm not naive neither is she. I suggest you READ before running your mouth...lol
Namthip ************
John Ibis Even if I might look like I've lived elite my whole life, I still visit my grandparents' in the country side every weekend and live as normal as other people. I ride bike taxis, I fish in the canal with my cousins, who studies at Thai public school where even the English teachers could speak less English compared to me, I live with nature and I've worked at small hotels to gain experiences on holidays and also worked as an internship as a nurse aid at a middle classed hospital, in quarantine I also taught English online to 12 students every business days for 6 months. I'm trying to say that we really couldn't judge anyone we don't know or generalizing stuff we don't know the whole story about. If you're pointing out on the racism part, I'm a muslim who's been looked down to as well by other people, that doesn't make me think that the whole country is not livable or the people there are mean. I accept who I am before entering the society, I notice that the people who discriminate me are only a very small part of the whole lot happy memories I had. And I think every country has its own bright side and dark side to it. FYI my parents worked so hard to make me live better than how they were at my age. I hope this message helps.

Unusual for Thais to comment about a stranger’s behaviour - usually “it’s not their business”. You can pass through a village and no one (except the kids🥰) will notice you.

So, you’re a failed English teacher with a chip on their shoulder about race?

Why don’t you fuck off back to whatever shithole you came from and get a real job instead of calling the entire nation of Thailand retards with the mental capacity of 5yr olds.

The idea that there are no physically fit foreign men in Thailand is utterly absurd. You obviously spent most of your time in Pattaya or nana. Ever heard of muaythai? Ever been to Phuket? It’s hardly full of fatties….

Honestly, I wonder how high your IQ is compared to an average Thai, the fact you felt the need to post this indicates you’re not as intelligent as you might think.

That's all correct and the low IQ is not exclusive to Thailand, it's common in most of south east asia. I will however argue this point, Thailand is still an amazing place to live and a great country with lots to offer in terms of lifestyle. Being an English teacher would obviously be miserable but if you have money already or an easy online source of income, Thailand can still be paradise. The thai people can often ruin the experience with their dishonesty, racism and greed but it's the same in all poor countries.

Sounds like a sacked teacher 🙄😂

As a lot of people often say, people that go into teaching do so simply because they can't think of anything else to do or don't have the motivation to do something more interesting and exciting.

I have first hand experience of teachers and I can tell you they are mostly university educated spoilt brats who totally owe their existence to 'mummy and daddy' who came up with the money for their education only for them to take the easy route at the end of it.

I have only respect for Thailand and it's people yes not every one is nice same as everywhere else. Thai culture is about their deep routed religion and IMHO smacks western countries and their culture out of the park.

I see extremely hard working people in Thailand working long days (normally in excess of 12 hours) and 6 days a week mostly on low pay. Brats would never even notice this 🙄

John Ibis A fair few people embellish their skillsets on job applications and use resumes / CV's that are professionally manufactured, so he would not be the first, nor last to slip into a role he is ill qualified for.

As a previous hiring manager who thoroughly vetted candidates, I can assure you that poorly skilled people do at times slip through the vetting process. Perhaps they had friends who acted as referrees and gave them glowing reports when it was false, who knows, but the point is, these are not assumptions, this is information he provided, albeit we had to disect his commentary to get here:

He states the following:

> He worked in Thailand teaching English.

> He worked through an agency.

> He was fired.

> Because he was fired, he required a new role which was not convenient for him to live in the accommodation he had acquired so he is CHOOSING to move rather than travel long distance to a new role.

> By moving, he is forfeiting his deposit and this is somehow someone elses fault?

His post is very confusing and runs in circles, showing a poor command of the very language he is meant to be teaching, so it is obvious that he does not possess the skillsets to teach the english language at a professional level.

If you take a position in a foreign country without having the skillsets to perform that job, the onus falls on you to perform that job. If you fail to perform at the level you are expected to and instead blame:

> Thai's

> Blonde females

> Non-physically fit western men

> Unhealthy food

> Compare people to those with learning disability

This shows a lack of understanding the root issue and refusal to take responsibility for his own poor experience. Instead of taking on board any feedback and learning and growing from it, it shows a lack of maturity, as well as a mentality of someone unlikely to succeed in a role as a teacher of students. To be able to teach you must first be willing to learn, not blame others. You need to be able to mentor those who are not grasping the information you are offering, not blaming them because you lack the skills to impart your knowledge or lack there of.
Larry *********

Lesson in life here for you - to get respect you must show respect. To be respected, you must own your own mistakes and shortcomings. You do neither. Thank you for sharing your experiences and concerns about teaching English in Thailand. We understand that living and working in a foreign country can come with challenges, including adapting to different cultural norms and navigating bureaucratic processes. It's important to approach these topics with sensitivity and respect for all individuals and cultures.

While it's true that experiences can vary based on various factors, such as appearance, it's not constructive to generalize an entire nation or its people based on personal experiences. It's crucial to recognize that experiences can be subjective and may not reflect the broader reality of living and working in Thailand.

In terms of Thai cuisine and culture, remember that every culture has its unique characteristics and values. Personal preferences and challenges in adapting to a new environment are valid, but it's important to express these opinions in a way that respects the diversity and richness of different cultures.

As a community, we aim to promote understanding, respectful dialogue, and the sharing of diverse perspectives. We encourage our members to share their experiences and opinions constructively, fostering cultural exchange and mutual support without resorting to stereotypes or offensive language.

Let's use this platform to support and learn from each other, embracing the rich diversity that comes with international experiences, and assisting each other in overcoming the practical challenges of living abroad.

Regarding the complexities of the visa process and other administrative tasks in Thailand, our Facebook group is a resource where you can get general help and advice from the community for free.
