TLDR : Answer Summary
An educator intending to move to Thailand in June seeks advice on securing a job and accommodation as a native English teacher. Key responses include suggestions to explore ajarn.com for job listings, links to educational videos, and insights into the teaching experience in Thai universities.

I only found this article (

/teaching-at-a-thai-university/) after my stint teaching English in Thailand, but it was the same as what I would have written. In fact, I wondered if it had been written by someone who’d picked my brain about my teaching experience. But, no it was published while I was still in high school! Nothing had changed in the meantime, and I’d hazard a guess that little has changed since.

How do people get teaching jobs here teaching English if you cannot speak ir understand Thai?

Don’t get me wrong, you’ll be able to get better teaching jobs if you can speak Thai / have a degree / have qualifications etc. But the unfortunate fact is that in Thailand enough employers are desperate enough for teachers that everyone can get hired somewhere on the food chain.

Forget not speaking Thai, I saw numerous raging alcoholics keep teaching jobs because the schools had no-one to replace them.

Because you don't speak Thai to your students

but you have to still be able to understand them if they need to communicate in Thai for some reason. That is why there are bilingual teachers in the US. Makes sense to know Thai too for a teacher. Never heard of any countries where a teacher doesn't have to be bilingual.

How many countries have you heard of? I've taught in 4 countries where this is common. We're not in the good ole US of A any more Frank.

Often there will be an assistant for classes where the students cannot speak the new language, or the students can speak enough and you all only speak the language being taught. If you speak their language to them, they stop trying to speak English and only speak their language. Yes it helps to know some phrases to control a classroom but it isn't completely necessary to speak the language of your students.
