Is Thailand really as heavenly as some expats claim, or are there hidden challenges?

Thailand was an absolute heaven for me! I have no other word to describe Thailand. Heaven on earth! The most honest people I have ever met. The most polite, the most genuine. I believe No human on earth with their right mind would hate that place. I wish I could find a job to stay there forever! 🥹🙏🏽

TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats share their overwhelmingly positive experiences of living in Thailand, describing it as a "heaven on earth" due to the friendly people, beautiful culture, and delicious food. However, there is a significant debate in the comments about the reality of living there versus visiting as a tourist. Some emphasize the differences, noting challenges such as cultural misunderstandings, dishonest practices, and economic exploitation prevalent in certain areas. Others counter these negative claims, reflecting on their long-term love for the country and its people. The conversation highlights a mix of admiration and caution, pointing out that experiences can greatly vary depending on location and interaction with locals.

A man dies. Peter looks at him, goes "well... you're kinda blah. Not good enough for heaven, not bad enough for hell... So I'll let you pick - where do you want to go?"

Guy goes: "well, can I see both?"

"Sure thing."

An angel picks the man up, takes him to heaven. It's a bunch of people dressed in white playing flutes and singing. Kinda boring.

Then they go to hell. It's a party! One giant strip club, people doing lines off of bar counters, drinking, fucking everywhere.

Guy goes "well, heaven looks kinda boring, I think I'd rather go to hell."

Peter: "no worries, on you go."

Guy finds himself in a fying pan over a fire.

"What the fuck is this shit? Where's the party?"

Satan pokes his head out: "Don't confuse tourism with immigration, buddy."

I have lived in Thailand for around 6-7 years in total, and I still have a very good impression of Thai people. They appear genuinely kind-heartet to me. Much more than people from other cultures do. Many people have told me that I will realise that Thai people are not so nice when I first get to know them, but I have now known them for so many years, and still have a very good impression of their nature. Of course no-one is perfect, but Thai culture/mentality/psychology is the best you get on this planet. I really think so. Would love to retire there.
Steve **********
@Peter ********
been here 20+, would recommend, * but don't be naive.
Kev *********
@Peter ********
I am retired and have lived here approaching 10 years. I still love it BUT....there is a sense that Thais believe themselves to be a superior race. As an example. I was invited by a friend to a land deal, 40million baht. I sat silent throughout then after the deal was struck, the purchaser said in Thai " why are farangs so stupid"? I then spoke in Thai and asked him why he thought farangs were stupid? I continued and added there are clever people and stupid people in every country. His jaw dropped and he responded in English " you speak Thai" to which I replied I understand enough......
Peter *********
@Kev ********
I have the opposite impression. Regarding race, I always had the impression that the Thais consider their own race (Asian one) inferior to the Caucasian one.
Kev *********
@Peter ********
I guess it all depends on the individual Peter but I've met many who think they're superior.

I remember feeling the same when I first came to visit many years ago . I have lived here for a long time and I still love Thailand , it is my home now and my wife is Thai. Visiting for vacation and living here are very different. If you want to feel the same way about Thailand forever then you can come and visit every year but don't live here. It's difficult sometimes, I am not as bitter and jaded as a lot of the others in this group, because I actually learned the language and try to be as Thai as possible. Don't try to change Thailand, let Thailand change you .

 and also thais are very racist to Black people So there is that 🤷🏻‍♂️

If they are really racist then I am glad I didn’t went too far with non of them! I just wonder what black people did to this world to deserve this! I know Thai’s bleach their skin as they are not white naturally, but I thought it was because of the Korean’s effect on them!! Anyway F* it! I don’t care 🤷‍♂️!! As a culture honesty is valued less than face and so people will say and do things that are dishonest pretty regularly and it drives me nuts. Their relationship to truth is... Compromised. Thailand has lots to reccommend it, but it is far from heaven, lots of domestic violence, lots of sexual assaults that are either unreported or go nowhere when victims come forward, sexual abuse of girls by male teachers and police occurs far too often. Just months ago a male teacher was filmed kicking a young student repeatedly using full force muay thai style kicks that knocked the child flying each time, the child was aged about 9 years. Parents expressed concern and there was momentary outrage, but the school protected the teacher. There is a lot of grisly and violent crime here, usually as a result of jealousy or greed. There is terrible air quality in different regions of Thailand at different times of the year, resulting in many hospital admissions and premature deaths from lung cancer. Most of the fresh fruit and vegetables are laden with pesticides in levels beyond what is considered safe. Even rice is grown using chemicals tbat are banned in Western countries. There is little land that has not been contaminated by these pesticides. The roads across the country are very unsafe with 75 people dying every day in motor vehicle accidents, lots of animal cruelty and neglect, and whilst there are some truly lovely, genuine Thai people, there are a lot of false smiles and scams

Just to check, you like Thailand ?
Michael ***********
I cannot describe it any better I went there for a month ended up staying two months, ate some amazing food and really enjoyed the street food visited a lot of the markets they have all over Phuket and Laguna , made some incredible Thai friends .
Brandon ******
Been exactly my experience after 6 trips.
Roy *********
I agree buddy, I came here because my friend invited me 9 year's ago.

I was skeptical but now I'm still here 😉
Steve *******
@Roy ********
good for you - i couldn't take Pattaya full time. Probably would be fine with Hui Hin or Chang Mai or south...
David ******
I could not agree more. I came on a 2 week holiday 27 years ago and never left!! Amazing people, country and culture.
Brown ********
@David *****
wow you're lucky. Surely you've met some dodgy people though in 27 years. It's as believable you haven't as a guy saying he's never had a fight with he's Thai wife of 27 years
David ******
@Brown *******
met many unscrupulous individuals but mainly foreigners and never got involved with them.

Kept myself to myself and funny how the harder you work the luckier you become. Built a strong business over 24 years, side by side with my wife. Sure there are times of different opinions between us but working through those times is what makes you stronger.

I still love my life and stand by my love of Thailand and it’s people along with all the fantastic foreigners I have been lucky to befriend over those years.

nice work mate.

I envy you. I have visited several times and each time I want to stay. I don’t know how you just left everything behind and found a place there. I have been too scared to pull the trigger. But I know reward comes with a willingness to take risk.
Steve **********
@Rusty *******
well worth the shot. Once here, even the memories of 'there' are gone.

Not not for All.
David ******
@Rusty *******
Guess I was young and full of optimism or perhaps naivety depending on your perception. Best move I ever made. Hard early years but this is a land of opportunity if you are willing to give it time and work hard.
Stephenie **********
Have you been drinking alcohol sir?
Paul ********
@Stephenie *********
No he sees the beauty of the people
Steve **********
@Paul *******
' The people ' are not. Pattaya or Nana nor Loy Kroh
Steve *******
@Stephenie *********
no he went for a walk down Soi 6.....now thinks he is Tom Cruise (like many of us)
Steve **********
Na, no book can explain, even Thai Fever. or others.

As for Soi 6...have to experience 1st hand .

@Steve ******
for some guys just getting those cat calls from every girl when you walk down the street is a confidence booster. That is until they realize they're doing the same thing to the guy right behind them.
Steve *******
@Bruce ********
yep.......100% and even then that bounces off some of the really thick ones... ;-)
Steve *******
@Bruce ********
exactly...but if you are early enough, no one is behind you and you get attention that you have never had in your life. Could get to a newbe's head if he was starved. I had a buddy with me the 1st time who had been there 2 x b4....so I knew what to expect. But i can see how it would make you feel better. everyone should read "A fool in Paradise" before heading out to SE Asia.

Ian **********
Agreed, everything is just amazing
Steve ********
Roland Winter Ah ok. I didn't think so. 🤣
Steve ********
@Ian *********
Everything amazing? The rubbish and garbage piled up in places, the plastic bottles and cartons dumped in waterways, the stench from the canals, the electric cabling on display everywhere, the old dirty buses, the cars not giving way to pedestrians etc etc? Get real please. Thailand is a lovely country, but to say everything is amazing is delusional
Ian **********
@Steve *******
your looking at the menial things, yes it needs typing up but to what the Western world full of expense and corruption, I will take the opposite thanks but each to their own
Steve ********
@Ian *********
It's just your use of "amazing" as though it's something really exceptional, which it's not. I could describe Laos as "amazing", I could describe New Zealand as "amazing" if I focused on the positives and conveniently ignored the negatives, as you've done. And the western world full of corruption? Yeah, let's be thankful corruption doesn't exist in Thailand
