Hi, I'm planning to go to Thailand in May and look for an English teaching job. I have a US passport. I understand you can get 60 days on a tourist visa, so I'm hoping that's enough to apply and get work. I'm expecting that I will need to then go to another country and wait while the visa processes. Do you know how long it takes and if I can go to a neighbouring country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is planning to travel to Thailand in May with a US passport to look for an English teaching job, initially on a 60-day tourist visa. The conversation discusses visa options, the role of employers in obtaining work visas, potential extensions for tourist visas, the importance of having a bachelor's degree, and the challenges of finding adequately paid teaching positions in Thailand. Recommendations are made to apply for jobs before arrival, bring necessary documents like transcripts and diplomas, and consider contacting schools in advance. Several users also warn against coming to Thailand without an assured job.

Make sure to bring your transcripts from University and a copy of your diploma. If you want to work at a Thai public (government) school, they will need those. As many have said, the public schools pay about USD 1,000/month. Not great, but one can certainly live on it. The Thai school year starts in May but schools will prefer to hire before then, so it would be best to contact schools asap. If you wait until May, there might not be many positions still available.

There are also private schools (some of which operate on a US-like schedule (school year starting in September) and tutoring centers where kids go to take classes after school.

If you work at a school, plan on being there for the whole school year--it takes a while to get the hang of things, esp. if you've never lived in Thailand. It's also much better for the kids if the teacher stays at least for the whole year. Good luck!

it's not easy to find a decent paid teaching job. you might end up with schools paying 1000us$/month. Korea pays the best, vietnam surely pays better than thailand

Beacon Yamsaard intl school here in HuaHin is a very reputable school, and I have spoken to several teachers from foreign countries that works there. Hua Hin Intl School is also good,,,and Hua Hin is a very nice town, 3hrs from Bangkok, and right on the ocean with beaches and lot's of golf courses if you play too.

I take it that you have a degree? if not the only thing you may be able to do is teach English on line and hope you don't get caught?

I would not come without a job already guaranteed, this country is not the same as the US or Europe, if you do come without that guarantee you may end up very disappointed.

I assume you have a bachelors degree? Without one you stand no chance

a bachelor degree is required to teach in a school. That’s been the case for some time.

It's mostly about your employer. Some employers are willing to provide the huge amount of paperwork required to convert your visa to a work visa without leaving Thailand but most will send you to a nearby Thai embassy or consulate to apply for your work visa from there which requires significantly less paperwork.

With a tourist visa you can also apply once for a 30 day extension.

What countries you can go to is between you and them and your passport. That has nothing to do with you looking for a job in Thailand.
