TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently in Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa (UK) and plans to extend it by 30 days. They are inquiring about neighboring countries from which they can obtain another 60-day tourist visa. Community responses suggest several options for border runs, primarily highlighting Laos (specifically Vientiane) as a popular choice for a visa application. Other suggestions involved potential visa runs to Penang, Ho Chi Minh City, and additional Southeast Asian locations, although experiences differ across regions regarding application ease and requirements.

A friend applied in Penang for 60 day. He had financial statement, accommodation but no air ticket out-refused. "One woman was refused entry to Consulate for wearing shorts"

HCMC you need to book an appointment but 3 of us had no issue obtaining our 60 day visa. Applied Monday morning and collected Wednesday afternoon no queues no issue.

Yes it was straight after visa exemption and 1 extension. We stayed in HCMC for 10 nights.

from Chiang Mai it is probably easiest to visit the Thai embassy in Vientiane, to apply for a 60 days tourist visa single entry. The requirements are absolutely doable (contrary to absolutely shitty requirements in Penang, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh), however you will need an appointment with the embassy, and they require 3-4 working days for the processing. Here is the relevant webpage of the Vientiane Embassy

You might want to say where abouts you are in Thailand so others can advise on options of which embassy or consulate might be the closest or easiest to apply at. Lots of choices in SE Asia. Some require appointments, some require applying online - and then visiting the embassy once approved to get the visa.

Only China uses the evisa system and I have no clue whether they’d allow a visiting foreigner there to apply for one.

OK the Vientiane embassy requires appointments. Savannakhet doesn’t but it’s a fair bit away from you.

You might want to look in to flying to Penang (also doesn’t need appointments - KL does). Singapore requires an online application and once approved you get an appointment time. I don’t know much about the Cambodian consulates. Perhaps others can advise with direct experience.

From memory I believe Hanoi embassy requires an appointment but HCMC consulate doesn’t - but you’d have to check on that as I haven’t looked at either option for a long time.

better forget Penang, HCMC and Hanoi. Their requirements for an application to a tourist visa are next to insane 😑😑

Laos is probably the most popular choice for a visa run of the neighboring countries

Why not just bounce at Chong Mek and get a 30 day exemption stamp that you can then extend another 30?

You do know how far Chiang Mai is from Chong Mek?

Nong Kai- Vientiane or Mukdahan-Savanakhet are closer!

I know, OP hadn’t told us location yet when I made the comment.

I usually fly to Ubon, but I combine it with photography in the area as well.

You go to the Thai Embassy or Consulate website in the country you are thinking of visiting and check their requirements. Every one has their own idiosyncrasies. He wasn't being rude, he was giving advice

Every country surrounding Thailand offers that option either through the e-visa website, or at the Thai embassy/Consulate in each country.

I believe the only country in Asia that uses the evisa system is China. I have no idea on their policies regarding foreigners applying for a tourist visa from there.
