What are my options for renewing a NON-O marriage visa in Thailand if I want to travel from May to July?

I have a NON-O marriage visa. Which expires in June and find this very inconvenient , since I would like to travel May through July.. Hence , I would be away for renewal time period.

Spoke to visa agent today. They recommended the following,

- do a land border run , get a 30 Entry.

- within days , file for 90 extension , TM87 form. And pay the free 1,900 Baht.

- then after 45 days , apply again for NON-O Marriage Visa TM7 . 1,900 Baht.

?? Does this sound correct and doable ?? Or am I being led down the wrong path ?

This puts my renewal date into September , which i can deal with.

I have all paperwork , documents and funds required. Just don't want to deal with June renewal time frame.

Canadian with Thai wife.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, holding a NON-O marriage visa expiring in June, seeks advice on renewing it while planning travel from May to July. They discussed options with a visa agent, who suggested a land border run followed by a 30-day entry and subsequently applying for a 90-day extension. However, community responses indicate ambiguity around the steps, specifically about filing for extensions versus new visa applications and the associated fees. Alternate strategies like applying for a 60-day family visit extension and scheduling the NON-O visa application to fit their timeline were also suggested. The consensus suggests the user should approach their local immigration office for guidance.

Cancel your existing extention before you leave then get a new Non Imm O on your travels. You'd be stamped in untill October on your return and then apply for the 1 year extention of stay.

@Steve ******
I'm not leaving. Visa issues. Border run at most.

@Brian **********
Ok, when you said travelling I thought you meant abroad. That makes your situation easy to deal with. Just return to Immigration on the day they request, get your stamp and be on your travels.
Graham ******
So have you used the 60 day extension for visiting Thai family?
Brian ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Graham *****
never. I was planning on going and speaking with immigration tomorrow about it. Good idea .

60 day

Then non-o 90 day

Then 1 year non-o with 30 day , under consideration period.

Correct ?
Graham ******
@Brian **********
Yes, start again with a new Non-O then the 12m extension

@Graham *****
3 steps and a considerable period . Perfect.

,?? How far into the 60 day extension for visiting family , would I apply for the 90 day non-o with TM87 ?? Do you know ?

If you’re over 50 why not transfer it to an extension of stay based on retirement. You’ll lose what’s remaining of your marriage Non O.

@Gareth *******
I need a September or October renewal date for my lifestyle .

I was previously on an extension of stay based on marriage. It was due to expire when I was out of the country. To prevent having to start a whole new non O process I was able to convert it to an extension based on retirement. It’s the easiest solution, which you could do now.

@Gareth *******
Having to restart the non-O process is identical to getting your renewal done. Always the same documents are needed. In the end, it comes to the same thing.

Bob **********
@Brian **********

@Bob *********
yes , but a bigger hassle in June and July .. .Starting over is not what I wanted , but I listened to visa agent and this is where I am now.

They're basically saying you start over again which may or may not suit you. You can renew an extension 30 days in advance at most offices and 45 days in advance at some. They may even let you do it even earlier than that if you can show you have travel booked. As you're on a marriage Non-O you'll need to ask them about the under consideration period too
Paul *******
@John *********
It doesn't make a difference though. The requirements for a new extension and for a renewal are identical. The only minor issue comes with having to either get a new non-O abroad or converting another type of visa in country (such as a tourist visa).
John **********
@Paul ******
sorry I'd forgotten he was on a married Non-O so wouldn't have to worry about money from overseas. I've never heard of a tourist visa being converted to a Non-O, I'm pretty sure it's not possible without first applying for an in country Non-O
John **********
@Paul ******
if applying for a new in country Non-O in which case 800k baht would have to be transferred in from overseas if he can't get an income affidavit. You can't convert a tourist visa to a Non-O, you have to apply for a new Non-O.
Paul *******
@John *********
In some cases you can convert from a tourist visa. In any case, someone who's already been on a marriage visa in this case (not retirement) would presumably continue maintaining the minimum balance required to qualify for that even when not on that visa, so they can easily get back on that extension.

An alternative is applying for the 12 month multiple entry version, which for business people traveling abroad for work a lot, is every bit as good and might be more suitable than the in country extension.

I can renew early , yes , but will be out of country for the under consideration period. Easier to get everything moved to September. Lifestyle

Are we assuming the 90 is really 30 and just a typo.

Other than that yes that will work.

BUT YOU CAN manipulate the system.

When you are expiring go and apply for a 60 day visit family extension ( this assumes you haven't used one recently) , then go back during that 60 day and apply for the extension.

Then you don't have to leave.

Speak to your local immigration office, an agent is not necessary unless there are other issues.

If asked why you are doing that , you can say you need time to season your funds for 2 mths. To meet the criteria.

@Chris ******
I interesting. Well said. Thank you. I'll check..

@Chris ******
he says he will be out of the country

@Michael *******
will be in country , border run if needed
Brandon ************
The 2nd step is not filing for a 90 day extension. It's filing for a new non-O visa and the price is 2000 baht not 1900 baht.

Then after 45 days you would apply for the 1 year extension.

There is no 90 day extension available from a visa exempt. Unless you meant filing for the 30 day extension from the 30 day visa exempt entry, and then filing for the 90 day non-O from that.
