What are the options for extending my stay in Thailand while applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage?

Hello, I am a Canadian citizen applying for a non-O visa based on marriage to a Thai. I am in CM on a tourist visa 30 day extension that expires on August 26. My cash is currently seasoning in a CM bank, thus the earliest that I can apply for the non-O visa is August 20, then having only 6 days remaining on my tourist visa extension.

I do not know how long it will take to complete the non-O visa process, so I am considering what options would be available to extend my stay here while the process is completed.

Some alternatives we are considering include:

- border bounce for 30 days extension

- apply for 60 day extension for visiting Thai family

Any suggestions or advise to get us through the non-O application period would be much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian citizen in Chiang Mai is applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage to a Thai national, but is concerned about the timing as their tourist visa extension expires soon. They are exploring options to extend their stay, including a border bounce or a 60-day extension for visiting family. Community members clarified that the seasoning of funds is not required for the initial Non-O application, and highlighted the need for 15 working days to process the visa. They also noted that the initial visa does not have a waiting period after approval. Various suggestions and clarifications were provided to help the user navigate their visa application and extension options.

isnt there then a 30 day 'under consideration' period after being granted the visa?

, no. Under consideration period is only for yearly extensions. Not for the initial in-country visa.

As your married just before your current tourist 30day extension expires you can apply for 60day visit family extension, without bouncing anywhere.1900bt..(as long as you havent already had one since entry)

they have no need to do that if their ultimate goal is getting the Non-O and then the year extension πŸ˜•

They don't need to "buy time" as their stamp has the required days left on it and they don't need to have the funds seasoned

You don't have to wait for two months for your funds to be seasoned for the initial in-country visa in Chiang Mai if I remember right. Two months of seasoning is only for yearly extensions. But you need to check with CM office to be sure.

And you have to have 15 working day minimum to be able e to apply for an in-country visa in Chiang Mai. So The latest day you can apply may be 25 July (there are two national holidays until 26 Aug).

Refer attached for a rough timeline of the in-country procedure.

As you are a Canadian, you can check with your embassy in Thailand to see if you can get an affidavit for your financial proof or not. If you have an affidavit from them you don't have to show the money in a Thai bank account.

This is the financial requirements part of the general requirements list for an in-country visa based on marriage to a Thai national. You need to check CM list though.

I believe you have your wires crossed a bit

In Chiang Mai you need a minimum of 15 WORKING (business) days to apply for the in country Non-O visa (that's about 21 calendar days)

Also to apply for the initial 90 day Non-O visa there is NO seasoning of funds required. <- That 2 month seasoning is only when you go to get the year extension AFTER you get the Non-O visa and it runs down..

I'd say you're fine as long as you apply for the Non-O on or before the first week in August (end of July would be better πŸ˜› )
