Phuket Immigration office is still attempting to charge for Residence Certificates. In October I refused saying that their boss had said in the Phuket Gazette they were free and also it was common knowledge. The certificates were provided in about 20 minutes without issue. On this occasion the young woman who took my form and passport asked the boss sitting behind her and he nodded to accept the documents. Waiting for them now, if Iโm still here in a week Iโll update

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether a Residence Certificate in Phuket should be free or if it incurs a fee. One user reported a successful experience obtaining the certificate without charge, highlighting conflicting information regarding costs in different locations in Thailand. Some commenters mentioned experiences of being charged fees or needing to tip for expediting services, indicating a broader issue with bribery in immigration processes. Examples from other cities, like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, show varied practices and fees, with some maintaining that the service is free but may take longer without payment.
It take two persons to bribe, one asking for it and one willing to pay for it. Welcome in Thailand, a country with a culture where a tip to get a service done when you want is accepted by most people and it is not only Immigration, it is every office in Thailand also for Thai Nationals. We have to accept it or fight it, when we are asked. That the service slows down when we fight it, does not sounds strange to me. I wish you good luck and hope you do not have to stay overnight in the office while waiting. I close this topic, just because there is nothing we can do to stop taking bribes inside Thailand.
It is free. And they are given 3 weeks to send it to your postal address. So... If you want it today, you pay. Or convince them to do it for free. But if you'll try to be rude... Might end up waiting it by Post, lol =)
Chiang Mai it's free.... but takes a month. If you want 1 day turnaround they direct you to the agent across the street for 1000 baht. Tipping by proxy ;).
