TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a residence certificate in Bangkok, an individual needs to ensure they have completed their initial 90-day report, as this process often requires being in Thailand for approximately 4-5 months. Applicants typically need to present various documents such as the TM30 form, a copy of their visa, and a completed application form. There is often a fee associated with the certificate, reported to be around 200 Baht, though some have mentioned alternate locations where it may be issued for a lower fee or even for free. The process can take around 40 minutes if all documents are in hand, but exact times may vary by location, such as at Chang Wattana or other immigration offices.

What is an arrival card

in ancient Thailand, in a dark time few care to remember, the noble warriors of immigration would guard the borders with an iron fist and deadly cunning. Those few they deemed enlightened enough to enter the kingdom, however, would be required to fill in a small piece of card with the details of their return flight and have it stapled to a page in their passport. This, was the legendary TM.6. This, was the arrival card.

@Thomas ***********
Whats a "boarder"? In the context of a national boundary, it's spelled BORDER.
Thomas ************
@Paul ******
I'm writing an epic immigration saga here, there's going to be typos in the first draft

@Thomas ***********
This card is still used now. Handed out at all land borders.

In which cases do you also need residence certificate (apart from getting driving license)? Do you also need a lease agreement, what if you're in a hotel or living with somebody or own a condo?
Samuel *********
@Brch *****
buy a motorbike/car and put your name on the green book.

I just went to main immigration and to lok sai immigration. Both said no to 30 day visa exempt stamp. Also went to british embassy they told me to go to immigration
Paul *******
@Nick ********
Try another office or approach an agent. No, you don't need to be using an agent for your visa extension for them to assist you with getting a certificate of residency.

Nick Rostron so sorry, maybe a different day and clerk would be better? Worth a try. I went to the government offices in Khon Kaen with my Thai fiancรฉ for his business issues, as an observer. I couldnโ€™t believe the endless paperwork. We had to drive over an hour each way. The sad part is; could have been handled easily through a fax. I was amazed how patient, cordial, and accepting the Thai public were.

Can only get a residence certificate afyer your first 90 day report, which means at this time you would have been in Thailand for about 4-5months already, this while your insurance will only cover you driving with a IDP for 3 months, it seems like the bank account conundrum, you need a Thai bank account for a long term visa, but you cannot (easily) get a long term visa without the bank account
Mark ********
@Riaan *********
who told you that your insurance is only valid for 3 months or the IDP for that matter? Neither assumptions are correct
Alex *******
@Riaan *********
So what happens if you never do/get a 90 day report because you frequently travel into and out of the country so that no travel undisrupted period is at least 90 days?
Viola ********
@Riaan *********
no, 90 days report you can get without any requirements. So itโ€™s not a locked circle ๐Ÿ˜…
Richard *********
@Riaan *********
Thats ONLY bangkok< Phuket u can get one on a 30 day visa exempt stamp>>

You need one to:

Open bank account

Buy a vehicle

get a drivers license
Riaan **********
@Richard ********
that brings me to another thorn in the flesh, seems like official rules are only guidelines and each immigration office and officer interpret it differently.

Wonder of it will ever be standardized throughout the country.
Steve ********
@Riaan *********
My insurance doesn't mention IDP. Phew!
Eric *****
This is not true. I got a residence certificate last week in Bangkok and I've only been in-country for 1 month. I have not done a 90 day report.
Riaan **********
@Eric ****
you were lucky, read point number 2 om the original photo, it is required, some embassies of your own country can issue it, but not all
Jeffrey ************
@Riaan *********
90 days = 3 months. Not 4-5.
Riaan **********
@Jeffrey ***********
and to get the original NonO, and then extension on that? Some immigration offices will only allow the extension when you have less than 30 days. So even if you get it in your home country, it is for 3 months, then you come here, have to stay for 2 months before you get the extension, only then does the 90 days before your first report start, which is 5 months
Jeffrey ************
@Riaan *********
What !!!! The 90 day notification is that you have been in country 90 days.....
Riaan **********
@Jeffrey ***********
the 90 days only start when you get your extension on the original visa
Jorge ****
I had to get one of those to renew my Thai driver's lic, 200 Baht at immigration.
Jo **********
glad I will never need one
Paul *******
@Jo *********
If you can apply for a pink ID card with yellow housebook, that should be very beneficial for you. In fact, I think the pink ID card might also be accepted for driver license renewals (would need to check). Sometimes it depends on the office.
Paul *******
@Jo *********
Why not? Even on your visa you'll need one to apply for a driver's license and to buy or sell a vehicle.
Jo **********
@Paul ******
really? thatโ€™s crazy.
Paul *******
So the embassy letter or pink ID are two other alternatives. I think a work permit is another option as well, for buying and selling a car but for obtaining a license you do need a certificate of residency in any case.
Paul *******
@Jo *********
Yes that's the rule..if your embassy issues such a letter, great. It may be possible to apply for a pink ID card and then use that when buying selling vehicles (in addition to your passport).
Jo **********
@Paul ******
