Hi guys, need some advice please. I’m looking to get a Thai Drivers License here in Bangkok. I currently have my US Drivers License. Currently on 60 day Covid extension stamp. I read that to convert a US license to a Thai one I would need a “certificate of residence” either from the Immigration or the Embassy. For US embassy it costs about 1500 baht to get that paper on the same day, however there are no appointments available until later next month. I heard apparently it costs about 200 baht at the Immigration.

Since I’m a tourist and not required to do 90 day reporting, can I request certificate of residence from the Immigration? If so, what are the documents please?

I have TM30 and living with relatives.

Thank you 🙏🏻

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking guidance on obtaining a Thai driver's license by converting their US license while living in Bangkok on a 60-day Covid extension stamp. They need a certificate of residence to do so, which can be obtained from either the US Embassy or Immigration. The user notes that the embassy option costs about 1500 baht but has long wait times for appointments, while they hear Immigration may provide it for free but often for a small fee (200-500 baht) and potentially face delays. They ask if they can request this certificate from Immigration as a tourist and what documents are needed.

Have you thought about International Driver's License?

At Immigration it is supposed to be free. BUT some offices argue that the free method takes 3 weeks; some say it needs to be sent by mail; bla bla.

In the end most people (i know) end up just paying between 200-500 baht and get it on the spot.

Hence... U don't get a receipt.

Passport (and maybe TM30 which u have) should be enough.

Not sure what counter in Chaengwattana.

As far as i know all offices around the country can issue that paper. I purposedly tend to avoid CW.
