TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian expat successfully obtained a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for Thailand in just 3 days, submitting an employment contract, driver's license, bank statement, passport, and photo. The process was straightforward, but there were questions regarding specific document requirements, such as the content of the employment contract and its relevance to remote work. Discussions also touched on the costs involved, with the DTV costing about AU$600 (approximately 14,200 baht), along with potential verification of employment by the embassy.

Hi
@Sebastian ******
I have applied and they have asked for letter from employer showing my current employment status and salary

Now problem is both my Lead and HR are on leave

And embassy has given me weeks time.

May i know if in your case did someone called your employer to verify your details?

In worst case I am thinking to prepare a format and submit it because i have already submitted contract and salary slip copies of last 3 months.

Let me know if embassy actually verified from your employer by calling or email?
Roberto ****
Does the employment contract have to indicate that you work remotely?
Andi ***********
@Roberto ***
Some embassies insist that is indicated in the contract or a letter from the employer/client. You have to confirm with the embassy you will apply from.

@Sebastian ******
. How can you proof residency with a driver’s license? In Australia, is your address printed on it?
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Bob ******
Yes, address is printed on the driver license.
Andi ***********
Did your employment contract have an electronic signature? I read one embassy accepted only wet signatures.
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Andi **********
No, just a scan of the actual signed document.
Andi ***********
Sebastian Kaess Thanks
Felix *******
Thanks for the report. I encourage you to try and get a Thai bank account in a random bank. Will they provide it, or won't? I think it's very important.
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Felix ******
I have Thai bank already but when I am back in Thailand I will check if it's possible with the DTV.
Felix *******
@Sebastian ******
I also have a bank already, but bank and driving license is a good litmus test whether this is treated as a tourist or non-immigrant visa. I will try myself next month too.
Jesse *******
Did you need to have a flight booked?
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Jesse ******
No need to upload an actual plane ticket. I had to provide just the date of arrival and the flight number.
Jesse *******
@Sebastian ******
thank you I applied this way

hey i have question

If I travel for initial 3 months and exit Thailand and if I re enter after 1 month so I would can stay for next 3 months - or 6 months i.e my counter of stay will start from 0 or 3 months?
Brandon ************
@Goel *******
every time you enter with a DTV you get a stamp for 180 days
Ch**
Thank you for your sharing Sebastian. How about freelance who cannot proof the employment contract?
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
I think freelancer have to proof their work with a portfolio showcasing skills, work samples, maybe income? Contacting the embassy is the best option.

@Ch**
... I'm sure there are many ways to qualify for this visa if you have the Bt500,000 and Bt10,000 application fee. I can think of a few, i.e. just be a digital nomad in your home country, that is where you are invited to put things in motion. You don't have to be an expert??
Ch**
@David *******
Thank you.
Prieto ****
so the DTV gives 5 years? You can extend the 180 days 1 time every year and getting out after the 365 and in again will allow you to stay the 5 years straight?
Maxim ***********
@Prieto ***
Yes, but the extension is optional. You can border run as many times as you please. You can get in and out 50 times per year if you want, that's the meaning of multi entry.
Sean *********
Do you know if the employment agreement needs to have a term the length of the visa? How do Americans who work remotely provide an employment agreement? All we get are offer letters generally.
Andi ***********
@Sean ********
The employment agreement does not need to be for the length of the visa.

I wonder if there is any country that the DTV fee is ACTUALLY

An in-person application in Laos is exactly 10K THB in cash.
Greta *****
@Andi **********
Can you apply for this visa in person in Laos ? I thought you have to apply in your country of residency
Andi ***********
@Greta ****
No, there are embassies that accept nonresident DTV applications in person. Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, China, Laos. I have been in contact with the Thai Embassy in Laos and may apply there in Sept. Check the Thai Embassy Laos website it tells you what you need.

Thanks this is great - quick question. Did you send in your whole employment contract or just the last signed page? I'm asking because mines roughly 20 pages long
Sebastian *******

@Khun ****
2 pages containing work details, salary and signed page. Company policies and such was an extra document for me, which I didn't attach.

I guess can't go wrong sending the whole lot, if the important parts are all spread apart.

I know that. Investment bank accounts have money in it.

@Will ****
is it an instantly accessible account, not one that takes x hours or days to get money out of? Normally an investment account would be invested in bonds, shares or whatever and they won't accept that

I don't know, I showed an Australian Bank account.
Will *****
@Sebastian ******
it would be an investment account with a bank instead of a checking Or savings account.

What does the employment contract read ? Does it have to mention working while living in Thailand?
Guen ******
@Randy *****
I’m also curious about that. For example on German embassy website they mentioned:

“Please upload your employment contract or employment certificate stating that you have permission for remote home office in Thailand or your business registration in case you are freelancers.”
@Sebastian ******
is it mentioned in your employment contract you are allowed for remote work abroad explicitly?
Andi ***********
@Guen *****
That depends on embassy. Tokyo embassy requires a direct statement of being allowed to work remotely in Thailand.
Sebastian *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Guen *****
I haven't found anything on the embassy website in Australia that it has to be mentioned. So in my contract that phrase is not included. It does make sense to have it included, probably could have asked my employer to change the contract.
Guen ******
@Sebastian ******
thanks for your reply

Thailand is not mentioned in the contract. What is mentioned is, that I perform my duites remotely (I am a system administrator), weekly zoom calls (with company during Australian work hours), and flexible work hours.
Chris *****
Isn’t it odd? You submitted an employment contract but the remarks stated “Employment Prohibited”. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Jim ********
@Chris ****
it means employment within Thailand I.e working for a Thai company. Remote working is fine and pretty much the whole point of the visa

The e-visa system. You don't need to send your passport in anymore. Just login and upload your documents. Depending in which state you live, you choose the embassy. Queensland has to choose the embassy in Canberra (but it's all explained when you login).
Liana *******
@Sebastian ******
I’m an Australian citizen planning to apply for this visa very soon, two questions:

1 - I just recently had a METV from Canberra embassy expire on 18th July (and was in Thailand with many other tourist visa’s prior to this), essentially trying to assure the embassy every time that I am there simply for travel/leisure. If I then apply for a DTV via the same embassy so soon, would this create a discrepancy in the eyes of the embassy and potentially effect the outcome, where now suddenly I am a remote worker? Or do they not care about this bc they get my money 😂

2 - Is there any way for the embassy to determine whether I am actually in Australia at the time of applying or not? I am not in Thailand right now, but I’m not in Aus either, but I’d like to apply via Canberra embassy as they have been super efficient with every application. I can upload my drivers licence and proof of flight from Aus to Thailand. Besides this, would there be any way for them to know that I wasn’t in Aus at the time?
Helen ********
@Liana ******
technically, by applying to a country where you are not currently located, you are violating the terms and conditions of the e-visa system because you are providing false information. Previously they could request proof of flights from the e-visa country into Thailand and had declined visas when it didn't match up. How they would track that or what would trigger them to investigate, no idea but I personally wouldn't risk losing the visa fee.
Henrik *****
@Liana ******
It will be registered where you are, everytime you go through a pass control into any country.

In Thailand it is very visibel, because you get a stamp in the passport, but essential the same will happend in any country when you show or scan your passport.

You may contact the Thai embassy in the country you are in, and ask if you can apply from there.
Liana *******
@Henrik ****
so even if I am not providing my passport to the embassy (as it’s not required with eVisa), do they have some kind of software that tells them which country I am located in at the time based on which immigration checkpoint I have passed through? I didn’t think countries would share this information between them.
Henrik *****
@Liana ******
You will have to provide pictures of you passport, and you will have to show evidence, that you are residing in the country, where you apply from.

Number 1 & 3 in required documents.
Shar *******
@Sebastian ******
ok but you are in Australia I think. We are in thailand now. We are going to try and apply from hong kong
Greta *****
@Shar ******
You have to apply in the country of your passport for this visa
Maxi ******

you can't apply in Thailand
