What are the current costs and details related to the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for Thailand?

Jul 16, 2024
Regarding DTV Pricing: Official visa fee is 10k THB. However, since the DTV is only available outside of Thailand, prices set by the Thai consulates in local currency apply - at quite a premium.

Example:

Actual current exchange rate:

10,000 THB = 254 EUR

Price asked by the eVisa system in Germany / Berlin:

350 EUR = 13,768 THB

~38% more expensive.

Even higher premiums in other currency regions!

Still a great deal visa. Just letting y'all know.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for Thailand costs an official fee of 10,000 THB (approximately 254 EUR). However, prices may vary significantly when applying through Thai consulates outside of Thailand, often being 30-40% more expensive due to unfavorable exchange rates set by the embassies. The visa is available for 5 years with the requirement to leave Thailand every 180 days, with the option to extend the stay by applying for additional 180-day extensions. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate proof of remote work or engage in 'soft power' activities, such as attending courses or workshops lasting at least six months. Applicants are advised to check specific requirements with their local Thai consulate, as these may vary by country.

Good luck to pay and then you do not full fill the requirement. There are no clear info about employer, freelancer, aso.

So you get a 5 year visa if you attend a cooking class, a Muay Thai camp, a seminar or a music festival ? Nobody will believe this. A medical treatment like a date for a breast operation and you get a 5 year visa? Try, pay and you will see the answer.

And I will start to organise Seminars and I become a billionaire

Or just wait a few more days for your local consulates to clarify what kind of proof they accept. I also believe certain minimums of “soft power” activities will have to be met. But in general, yes: you attend something for a few months but will get a 5 year visa. That is what it is.

The processing time for the DTV is really up to them - as it does not require other, centralized institutions or ministries to be involved, as far as I understand it. Sounds to me as if they themselves are also not sure / well enough informed yet about what exactly to accept as proof regarding the requirements. Other consulates mentioned they were informed the same day the public was about the launch. You are in for a bit of an adventure on this one. But somebody is gotta go first. 🙂

An extension is an additional time allowed in Thailand without having to leave the country and return. You pay for that extension at an immigration office within Thailand and they give you a new stamp in your passport so that you can stay longer. You can do that once for every time you entered Thailand.

That depends on your location / the requrements of the Thai consulate closest to you. For German citizens for example, the Thai consulates in Germany accept a copy of our national ID card as proof of current location. Other consulates in other countries would also accept electricity bills etc. You need to check with them.

Honestly it’s better. We don’t want every man and their dog rocking up begging for a visa. It should be for professionals who can prove their worth to living in Thailand. Bank balance, paying fees and requirements. It’s a great visa as you said, but it’s only fair those who are worthy and professional are approved. We’ve all had to do it on other legit visas, so should everyone else.

Making Thailand too much like the west isn’t what anyone wants, but more people who come from the west unfortunately it will may go that way.

I know many highly successful people who are very serious about their business. And they value their time over everything. They would never live in a country like Thailand where you waste so much time with immigration nonsense.

Alsothey would never do business IN without being able to own 100% of their country and the land that their factory is built on.

Add to that the new ridiculous 35% tax and you get the conclusion "Real professionals do not go to Thailand"

You maybe get some guys with their online business for a few years but they all leave if they become really successful

This is one of the things that annoys me a lot about the embassies. I complained to the BOI about the Washington DC embassy charging hundreds of dollars more for the LTR because their exchange rate was pure garbage. They basically just brushed me off and said the embassies set whatever rate they want.

Why even put a price if there's no requirement to stick to it? They probably won't even let you use that same exchange rate when you're proving the 500,000 baht.

I hear you. With the LTR the price difference came out to be even more drastic (like 500 EUR more e.g. if issued in Germany). However, at least with the LTR people have a choice, as it is also available to be issued / converted to in Thailand at the official price in THB. People could just come on a visa exemption or a TR visa and then collect their LTR in Bangkok. No such path with the DTV. Wrote you a PM in FB messenger btw ... if you have a moment to check. Cheers.
