Got my new 5 years DTV visa !! Very excited !!

Just posting my application experience as reference, takes around 2 weeks, all documents are sent online.

Apply to Washington DC Thai embassy

Cost: 400USD

Timeline:

7/28: sent applications,

8/6 requesting for more supporting documents

8/9 supporting document sent

8/13 Visa issued

My supporting documents:

1. Bank statement ( US, equivalent >500k baht)

2. Photograph

3. Copy of US driver license and passport

4. My CV and initial work contract

Embassy further requesting for :

1. Last year US tax return

2. Employer letter stating my remote work position

3. Last paystub.

During the application questionnaire, they also ask for the date/flight information arrive in Thailand. However they are not requesting for a proof for flight booking.

From what I understand, DTV can be only applied outside or Thailand. If you apply it in Thailand will be an automatic denial.

Looking forward to live in Thailand ( especially Pattaya) !

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post shares a user's successful experience applying for a 5-year Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) at the Thai Embassy in Washington D.C. It took about two weeks, involved an online application, and required specific documentation such as a bank statement, photograph, and a copy of their driver’s license and passport. The visa costs $400 and can only be applied for outside Thailand. They highlight the importance of providing the necessary supporting documents, including a recent tax return, employer letter, and pay stub. The comments dive into discussions about the ease of the process compared to other visas, the differences in application requirements at various embassies, and other expats' interests in moving to Thailand.

If you have a DVT visa, you can only be in Thailand 6 months per year. For the other 6 months, can you stay in Thailand by exiting and coming back on entry stamps?

@Kenny ******
you can extend your stay for another 6 months, only have to pay 1900 baht at the local immigration office, without leaving Thailand.

After 12 months is up, you can go out of Thailand and come back again and the clock reset, you can have a six-month entry stamp again. There’s no limitation on how many times you can do this in a single year so in another word, you can stay in Thailand the whole year if you want.

So it is pretty much like multi entry tourist visa, except for longer validity and entry time

so 5 years straight? That's amazing

Did you apply as the owner of your own company, the one you do contract work under? Or as contracted staff for your client?

Just curious as they seem to only ask for tax returns if you own the company you’re working for, but they also asked for a paystub which is something given to W2/salaried employees.

Normally you wouldn’t have both unless you issued yourself a paystub.
Stephen *****

@Alan ******
I am hired by a business to do contract work, which I am able to do it remotely. (independent contractor ) Of course I have other line of work, but I do not have to tell them to complicate the situation.

As a independent contractor, I do not receive W2. Instead, I showed them the 1099 and Schedule C I filed the last two years from this job. I haven’t filed my 1040 for tax year due to extension, but they are happy just to see the 1099. (I feel like there’s no need to send them the whole tax return anyway)

Fortunately, this work income is quite steady without fluctuation so I have a paystub from ADP related to this job to show them the income each month. To be honest, I feel like they are assuming that I am an “employee” from the company, So to generate letter from an “employer “ is challenging as well however I did it anyway.
Alan *******
@Stephen ****
Interring, thanks. Yes it seems like an odd request like they’re mixing up being a business owner and employee of another business.

If it was a new business and you hadn’t yet filed a tax return I wonder what they’d ask for there.

Well, glad you got it sorted out.
Stephen *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Alan ******
in this case they are asking for Copy of registration of company (outside of Thailand) , they’re just asking for some kind of portfolio of your work to demonstrate the business is legitimate

Thank you for posting this. I will be applying for a visa in a few months.

"If you apply it in Thailand will be an automatic denial. " Do you *know* this? Did you hear this somewhere? I have applied for several visa, while in Thailand. I never tell them where I am and always provide travel into/out-of Thailand, I usually provide an explanation that I travel a lot.... Hasn't been a problem yet.

Very detailed information:

You can apply in person at your local Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. It's important to note that for the DTV, you must apply from the country where your employment is based.

Another option is to apply through the Thailand e-Visa website. The eVisa application must be completed from the country where you can establish your presence.
Andi ***********
Stephen Lin Some countries do not allow applications where your employment is based. I work in Tokyo but DTV applications only accepted by Japanese citizens or foreigners with permanent residency. I have to apply via London (P.O.B) or another country accepting non residents.
Stephen *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Andi **********
wow I look at the requirement in the Thai consulate Fukuoka, requirement is way stringent! guess this is a Japanese spirit.
Andi ***********
@Stephen ****
Yeah, very strict but I'd thought they would allow all residents the chance to apply. You are based in Fukuoka?

Directed from the mouth of Deputy Counselor affair. DTV can only be applied outside Thailand. For me that is $400, I would not risk it .

let’s see if it actually last 5 years, and if it’s renewable after 5 years. The Thai government loves to change rules…🧐

like I said to many , if there is a system, then there will be abuser for the system who goes to the loophole, and then it ruined the whole good purpose. I hope this is not going to be the case, but we will see.

The $1900 10-year visa is appealing to me. Do you think this is better? Why?
Stephen *****

@Terary *********
because it has 5 year validity without yearly renewal like retirement visa and student visa

you do have to pop in and out of the country to reset the 180 day, so there's that...

@Jean-Maurice *******
Depends on the embassy. Some ask for 3-6 mths of statements.
Jean-Maurice ********
@Andi **********
yeah i’m applying to the washington dc embassy also. hoping they aren’t like that. opened my primary nomading account only 2 months ago. haven’t really had 16,000K in any one account recently enough but maybe two statements will be enough either way. plus a l bank transfer slip of the 500K baht to my thai bank account.
Andi ***********
@Jean-Maurice *******
You should be OK then with what you mentioned doing it in Washington.
Jean-Maurice ********
@Andi **********
could you answer one more thing for me if you’re aware. for people who want to share as much info as possible in their documentation, is the common practice to string all the documents together in a merged pdf. like page 1 cover letter, page 2 bank statement (1), page 3 bank statement (2)… and so on?
Stephen *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Jean-Maurice *******
yes, I do include the cover letter so it is much more formal and organize, and yes, they do have a upload limit (like 5mb something like that, I forget), so you choose the file that can best represent yourself
Jean-Maurice ********
@Stephen ****
but it initially was just one bank statement and they never asked for more than one?
Stephen *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Jean-Maurice *******
I showed one bank statement, which have equivalent of way more than 500k baht. I’m not sure about the answer if you have two accounts , but each of them less than 500k. One of my friends are actually having the same problem when applying for renewal of retirement visa, and was told have to combine two account into one, to meet the requirement
Jean-Maurice ********
@Stephen ****
it’s all in one account but I would be fucked if they ask for more than 1 or 2 statements cause I only recently put it all together. but if you presented just one statement, I could be in the clear
Stephen *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Jean-Maurice *******
oh I understand, they only asking for one, they are not requesting for the last three months. You should be completely fine!!
Andi ***********
@Jean-Maurice *******
I have seen postings by successful applicants who did that. Also, success postings without the cover letter. The main thing is to give what is asked for. There is a limit on the size of uploads which needs to be taken into account.
Rachel ****
That’s great! Thank you for sharing 👍
Greta *****
And you choose Pattaya out of all places? 🤔
Stephen *****

@Greta ****
I already made that decision 5 years ago. I live at south side of Pattaya ( Practumak- Jomtien) area so relatively quiet and close to the beach. I walk 2 mins to night market and 5 mins to beach. Transportation is easy and cheap ( Bolt, baht bus) .There is big shopping mall ( Central, terminal 21) , vibrant night life, and people from all over the world. For me its the best place
