Hi Friends,

I know you have heard this question many times but please can you help me? I'm from Australia and entered Thailand with no visa on 1st April which allows me to stay for 30 days before I have to depart. I will be in Koh Lanta and I would like to extend my stay for at least 2 more months. How do I go about doing this? What Visa will I need? Where should I go to get the visa? Any other helpful info will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian expat in Thailand seeks advice on extending their 30-day stay on Koh Lanta, having entered without a visa. Suggestions include applying for a 30-day extension at the immigration office in Krabi Town for 1900 baht. Another option is a border run to Malaysia to obtain a Single Entry Tourist Visa which grants 60 days and can be extended at the immigration office. Alternatively, travelers can do an out-and-back trip to the Malaysian border to receive a new 30-day visa exempt entry stamp that can also be extended.

Yes as Tod said -(expanded a bit for your locale) go to Krabi Town immigration office - extend for 30 days - then when that 30 days is running out - take a hired taxi or rent car or border run van to Thale Ban National park border checkpoint in Satun Province (not far from Koh Lanta). Do an out and back in at the Malaysian Border - get 30 days. Then extend that 30 days.

Of course, merely pointing out you can’t ‘bounce’ Malaysia anymore, unlike Burma, Cambodia & Laos, conversely all of which require a visa at a cost, unlike Malaysia.

Given the alternatives - a night spent in a 400-500 baht equivalent Guesthouse - seems okay

yep. A night.

Still can be done - just have to stay longer.

Not allowed to ‘bounce’ anymore by land border with Malaysia. They insist you spend 1 night.

From Koh Lanta the shortest way is visit Penang in Malaysia and apply for the Single Entry Tourist Visa, on return you wil get 60 days Admitted to Stay and can be extended with an additional 30 days at immigration office

What you could do is go to the immigration office and apply for a 30 day extension for 1900baht. Then when that is running out you could go to the border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp right back into thailand to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp. AND if you wanted to you could extend that by 30 days too at the immigration office
