How can I extend my stay in Thailand after a 30-day visa on arrival?

Ok, guys I need your help on this, hopefully somebody can help me. I am staying in Thailand on a 30 day visa (on arrival). I just booked a condo for 3 months, so I have to extend my stay here. Now I know I can extend for another 30 days at Immigration, then fly to Laos and get a 60 day tourist visa and fly back to Thailand. That will give me a total of 4 months.

But I am a little worried that if I extend my stay with a month here, then fly to Laos to get a 60 day tourist visa, customs will give me trouble. Does that make sense?

Would it be beter to NOT extend my visa, but to fly to Laos before the end of the first month, get a 60 day visa, fly back en THEN extend with 30 days.

And for how many times can you do this back and forth? Because I already look into an year self-defense visa but it will cost my 30.000 baht.....this method seems a lot cheaper. THANKS!

TLDR : Answer Summary

They explore the option of extending their current visa for an additional 30 days at immigration and then traveling to Laos, or going to Laos first before the end of the month to get the tourist visa. Several community members confirm that both approaches are valid and share their experiences, noting potential concerns with customs and the limits on the number of extensions and visa runs.

@Robert ******
Robert *******
@Ro**
@Mi**

I think I got it figured out:

I will extend my 30 day visa exempt first with another 30 days for 1.900baht at a local immigration office, than when I am out of days I will cross the border, arrange a 60 day SETV for 1000 baht and extend this when needed at a local immigration office for 30 days.....

Oké thanks a lot ya'll!

People have been getting extensions on 30 day visa exemptions and then back to back Tourist Visa in Laos and other bordering countries for years. This is your first time doing it, you shouldn't need to worry about anything...
Jason ******
Mike Verest the extension just gives you an additional 30 days. So when that time is up you travel out somewhere and then you can apply for a Tourist Visa again and then come back and extend that for 90 days. Or if you don't plan on staying in Thailand longer than 30-60 days you can just re-enter on a free 30 day visa exemption.

You'd have to leave. Or get a 7 day extension-denied stamp.

And after getiing an extention IN Chiang Mai, I don;t need to do a visarun anymore? Somewhere I read that if you apply for a 30 day extention on top of your 60 days, you have to leave the country again.

Extend your visa exemption stamp (it's not a visa on arrival) and when that expires take the bus to Myanmar and walk across the border and get a new stamp. Repeat that 2 times in 2018. Cheaper than flying to Laos and get a tourist visa.
Robert *******
You apply for an Extension of Stay for 30 days at the nearest Immigration Office. The text on that website is incorrect and I do not believe this website is an official Thai Embassy.

Yes, but I still need to do a visarun when I apply for the 30 day extention? Because this I found on Thai ambasy website: "This is a 60-day Tourist Visa to Thailand that can either be a multiple or single entry and can be extended for up to another 30 days by means of a visa run."
Robert *******
You can come back into Thailand using a new Visa or the Visa Exempt Entry.
Robert *******
@Mi**
, with your SETV you will be admitted to stay in Thailand for 60 days, you can extend this stay with 30 days in Chang Mai as you wrote and after the in total 90 days, last date stamped as Admitted to stay in your passport you have to leave Thailand.

Good to know! But if I got a single entry tourist visa (60 days), and extend this with 30 days in Chiang Mai, do I still need to do a via run or can I stay in the country after that?
Tod *********
@Mike *******
no, you can get 30. That rule changed Dec 31st 2016 and now you can get 30 day visa exempt entries by land BUT only two of them in a calendar year.
Mike ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes, but the only problem is that you only get 15 days stay over land
Tod *********
It's not gonna make any difference if you do or don't get a 30 day extension on your 30 day visa exempt entry stamp you have now.

The 30 day extension is 1900baht at the immigration office OR just go to the thai consulate in Vientiane and apply for a single entry tourist visa for 1000baht. That gets you 60 days and you can extend that by 30 more as well.

You can get away with living here on tourist visas for a while, but at some point the consulates will start warning stamping your passport saying you can get tourist visas from them anymore. It usually takes 3 or 4 tourist visas from a consulate before they warning stamp you. You will probably also be questioned asked when you stamp into the country with a history of living here on back-2-back tourist visas.
Thomas ********************
No. This you can do in at immigration in Thailand.

Thanks! When I get back to Thailand after arranging a single entry tourist visa, will I have to go for another visa run for a 30 day extension?
