My fiancé is arriving from Australia on 23rd January and stay until end of July 2024. We are getting married in Thailand mid Feb. Due to other travel he didn’t have have enough time to get a Tourist Visa in Australia.

So he will enter on visa exempt and then we will apply for a 30 day extension.

1. My first question is how long after his arrival can we apply for the extension?

After the extension we will go to Penang and a get a 60 day Tourist Visa.

2. Can we extend the Tourist visa another 30 day?

We will then leave again and re enter on visa exempt for the last month.

3. Will that work to get another entry visa exempt?

He has a flight booked to leave Thailand in 22July.

I am also Australian.

TLDR : Answer Summary
My fiancé is arriving in Thailand on a visa exemption and will marry me in mid-February. We want to extend his stay after his arrival and have questions about applying for a 30-day extension, obtaining a 60-day tourist visa, and the process for re-entering Thailand on a visa exemption.

He might need an airline ticket to leave withing the first 30 days as he's entering on a visa exemption depending on airline

you need proof of intention of leaving thailand. It does not have to be a flight. Not everybody travels on return flight tickets travelling around various countries. Airlines only have to protect themselves that travellers are moving onto somewhere else with proof by any means. Doubt an airline after discussion would refuse you once you produce an itinery and receipts of travel out.

1. My first question is how long after his arrival can we apply for the extension?

-> Depends on the province he will be staying at the time of application. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and some others allow you to apply for a 30-day tourism extension when you have 45 days or less (means anytime once he arrives there) with the entry stamp. Most offices accept when the stamp remains less than 30 days. But a few offices including Jometien (Pattaya) and Samui let you apply for tourism extension only within the last week of your stamp. Check the local immigration office for their policy.

2. Can we extend the Tourist visa another 30 day?

-> Tourism extension is only ONCE per entry, then you need to leave the kingdom.

3. Will that work to get another entry visa exempt?

-> You can apply for a 30-day tourism extension ONCE per visa-exempt or tourist visa entry.

He needs to leave one more time to stay until later July as a tourist.

When he enters on Visa exempt, he is going to go to IT Square Laksi Plaza temporary office, just next to Lak Si station of SRT Dark Red Line.

When he enters on Single Entry Tourist Visa, he is going to go to Chaengwattana Immigration office, Government Complex Building B.

And you can book online

This is general requirements for tourism extension.

Just did mine today. It costs 1900 baht. You need a photocopy of your passport photo page and your entry stamp page, and you need a passport photo plus the address of where you are staying. And your physical passport of course. There’s a place next door where you can get your photo and photocopies done. It takes a couple of hours to go through the whole process, there’s a lot of waiting around for your turn.

They didn’t ask me for one, but I’ve heard other people have, so I think it’s at their discretion.

it appears at random selection or those who have been in Thailand with a recent history of visa exempt entry and varied extensions.

thanks Ellie. Can I just ask a follow up question. In regards to Q2. Once we have the SETV from Penang will he be able to extend this another 30days?

Q3 yes we will leave the country again. Do you think there would any issue with him entering visa exempt for the last 3-4 weeks. He has proof of flight out.
