TLDR : Answer Summary
A DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) holder is facing challenges in opening a Thai bank account, as banks are generally reluctant to grant accounts to those on tourist visas. Comments suggest that while some individuals have had success, recent changes in regulations have made it more difficult. Alternatives such as using an agent for a fee or considering a change to a more permanent visa type are discussed. Key requirements for account opening include a valid passport, proof of residence in Thailand, and possibly additional documentation.

Most Thai banks (e.g., Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank) require:A valid passport with the DTV visa stamp or entry stamp.Proof of address in Thailand (e.g., a rental agreement, utility bill, or a certificate of residence from the Immigration Office or local amphoe).In some cases, a reference letter from your embassy or employer, though this is less common for DTV holders.Some banks may ask for additional documents, like proof of funds or a minimum deposit (e.g., 500–1,000 THB).

change visa to a non-tourist long term visa or get a genuine work permit first

You can't open without work permit.

As a DTV holder you are not eligable for a Thai bankaccount, so you should change your visa to a genuine long term visa, if a Thai bankaccount is important for you.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Be aware there is a error in the start of the article ( and several other copy - paste media with the same article )

A Thai Bankaccount has never been a requirement to get DTV, on the contrary it has been one of the big advantage over other visa, that you could get DTV as long as you could show 500.000 Baht equivalent in any bank anywhere in the world.

It has never been the intention that DTV visaholders should be in need of a Thai bankaccount.

You are answering the wrong person, i have the right long term visa to get a bankaccount, and have stayed long enough in Thailand to get account anywhere I wan’t.

Would never ever support corruption, by using agents and get things the wrong way.

@Henrik ****
you could get a bank account on an exempt stamp with an agent up until a couple of months ago. Things have changed for sure

What was possibel months or years ago, is of no relevance now.

Most banks will want you to go to immigration office and get a residency certificate. Not very complicated.

most banks will still

deny you even with a residence certificate. with a 12month rental

contract. with house books and whatever ID you can provide. with a thai person…

I came in on a O Visa about 3 months ago and had no trouble whatsoever opening a Bangkok bank account without an agent Not sure if DTV has different rules. Beware of the vulture's😂
John **********
It still doesn't change the fact that you do not add anything valid to the conversation. Any colour you decide to paint it, your comment was pointless.
Anna *********
@John *********
DTV is completely different so your experience isn’t really relevant

@An**
Brodley Irrelevant only for the narrow minded. Any Information gathered surely will come in handy at some stage in life. I did point out I'm not aware of the rules. My comment might be helpful to someone, who reads the post whereas yours was totally pointless and unhelpful.
Anna *********
@John *********
on the contrary. Irrelevant information is one of the reasons so many people get confused. Pointing out such superfluous information can only help clarify the actual answer to the initial question

Again no need to be rude My initial comment was not indicative of narrow mindedness nor was it pointless or unhelpful
Jim ********
@John *********
rules have changed big time since you got one
Henrik *****
It is because you have a real longterm visa not a touristtype visa like DTV.
A.c. ***********
@Henrik ****
Come on now, the DTV *IS* a long-term visa. Five years. The fact that holders of it have to leave and come back in every 180 days (360 with a simple extension) doesn't change the fact that overall, they can stay in the country for five years with it. Yes, the DTV is classified as a "tourist type" visa, but it is unique among tourist visas because you can stay for that long.
Henrik *****
No DTV is not a long term visa, no matter how many times you say it, you will only convince yourself.

You will never get resident status on a DTV, only on non-xxxx

The Thai authorities will regard you as a tourist, for as long as you are using a DTV.
David *********
If you are here on a tourist visa. Why do you need a bank account
A.c. ***********
Because a DTV allows people to be in Thailand for FIVE years (with quick exits and re-entries, but that's minor). Would you want to live in Thailand for five years without being able to get a Thai bank account? No, you wouldn't.
Mark ********
@A.c. **********

@David ********
yeah with a decent home bank its not really necessary to

have a thai account. not much more expensive. and avoids any possible tax situation in the future

to save on the 220 baht charge?
Dany ********
@Mark *****
you still need to move the

money from your foreign account into your thai account. that will come at a cost as well
Jordan *****
@David ********
I ve had a bank account since my last long term visa years ago and I still use it every time I come back for vacations. You save thousands of baht on fees and can also pay and withdraw money with a QR code which is very convenient. I am guessing you knew this already, but you are trying to take the piss
Cruise ******
@Jordan ****
does the bank close your account if you are inactive and do not return to Thailand in awhile? How long was your longest non return

How about credit card? Do you cancel them or leave them active? But if active, you do have to pay the annual fee right?
Jordan *****
Cruise Channothing happens to your mobile banking app, or account and credit cards. I only spend 4 months a year in Thailand

that's why I'm here asking, I've asked a few already and had zero success except the one agent who wanted 35k baht......I'll pay 4k baht max to open one up as its not a big deal for me but would be nice to have.
Werner ************
@Adam *******
the agent wants 35k baht, this means it’s very hard to open an account
Brandon ************
@Werner ***********
You are absolutely not going to get a bank account for 4K. Those are prices from last year. The current price I've seen is 12,000 baht in Pattaya or 15,000 baht in Bangkok, if you can even find an agent to do it in Bangkok.
Jan ******************
Technically DTV is a tourist visa and therefore not easy to open a bank account even with an agent.

@Jan *****************
there's no technically about it. It is a longstay tourist visa.

it's a bit insane though, I went to a few banks and they accept a 1 year education visa to open a bank account but the DTV 5 year visa no way lol

@Adam *******
Try going to immigration and get a "Certificate Of Residence" from them. Tell the immigration customer service rep that you need it to open a Bank account. If they let you do it, then opening a Bank account shouldn't be a problem.

DTV is a 180days visa but can use multiple times within 5yrs

Agree, it’s quite strict now. People get denied even with a Non O visa unless they do the one year extension of stay which definitely needs a bank account first.
