TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry revolves around the challenges faced by a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) holder trying to open a Thai bank account. Many bank representatives and agents have been approached, but success has been elusive, with one agent quoting an exorbitant fee of 35,000 baht. Multiple comments discuss the difficulties of obtaining a bank account on tourist visas, emphasizing that banks prefer stable, long-term customers and are currently tightening regulations against fraudulent activities. Suggestions include approaching agents, securing a residency certificate, or considering pre-paid accounts with banks like K-Bank. Overall, DTV holders face significant hurdles in obtaining bank accounts in Thailand.

As a DTV holder you are not eligable for a Thai bankaccount, so you should change your visa to a genuine long term visa, if a Thai bankaccount is important for you.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Be aware there is a error in the start of the article ( and several other copy - paste media with the same article )

A Thai Bankaccount has never been a requirement to get DTV, on the contrary it has been one of the big advantage over other visa, that you could get DTV as long as you could show 500.000 Baht equivalent in any bank anywhere in the world.

It has never been the intention that DTV visaholders should be in need of a Thai bankaccount.

you could get a bank account on an exempt stamp with an agent up until a couple of months ago. Things have changed for sure

Most banks will want you to go to immigration office and get a residency certificate. Not very complicated.

they said no.......must be a recent thing, seems there really cracking down on this.....even 2 or 3 agents I've contacted the last 1 hours all said they can't do it anymore for DTV holders because of too much fraudulent activity going on with DTV holders

It’s harder now with all the new rules and regulations…if you just to open an acct for the QR code payment you can do a pre-paid acct through K-Bank…

My buddy got a Thai driver license and a motorcycle license and opened a Thai bank account, and he had no visa, he was in Thailand on a 2 week vacation. 🤣 He said he used One Stop Visa in Pattaya.

@Phil *****
👍 That's around the prices I was given when I was looking before I decided to do it myself. Very reasonable compared to some.

I came in on a O Visa about 3 months ago and had no trouble whatsoever opening a Bangkok bank account without an agent Not sure if DTV has different rules. Beware of the vulture's😂

@John *********
rules have changed big time since you got one
Henrik *****
It is because you have a real longterm visa not a touristtype visa like DTV.
David *********
If you are here on a tourist visa. Why do you need a bank account

to save on the 220 baht charge?

I ve had a bank account since my last long term visa years ago and I still use it every time I come back for vacations. You save thousands of baht on fees and can also pay and withdraw money with a QR code which is very convenient. I am guessing you knew this already, but you are trying to take the piss

@Jordan ****
does the bank close your account if you are inactive and do not return to Thailand in awhile? How long was your longest non return

How about credit card? Do you cancel them or leave them active? But if active, you do have to pay the annual fee right?

that's why I'm here asking, I've asked a few already and had zero success except the one agent who wanted 35k baht......I'll pay 4k baht max to open one up as its not a big deal for me but would be nice to have.
Werner ************
@Adam *******
the agent wants 35k baht, this means it’s very hard to open an account
Brandon ************
@Werner ***********
You are absolutely not going to get a bank account for 4K. Those are prices from last year. The current price I've seen is 12,000 baht in Pattaya or 15,000 baht in Bangkok, if you can even find an agent to do it in Bangkok.
Jan ******************
Technically DTV is a tourist visa and therefore not easy to open a bank account even with an agent.

@Jan *****************
there's no technically about it. It is a longstay tourist visa.

it's a bit insane though, I went to a few banks and they accept a 1 year education visa to open a bank account but the DTV 5 year visa no way lol

@Adam *******
which banks take the ed visa ??
Jesper *******
@Adam *******
DTV is a 180days visa but can use multiple times within 5yrs
Jan ******************
@Adam *******
Agree, it’s quite strict now. People get denied even with a Non O visa unless they do the one year extension of stay which definitely needs a bank account first.
