Can I open a bank account in Bangkok with a Digital Tourist Visa (DTV)?

Feb 2, 2025
I'm in Thailand with a DTV and planning to be here as long as the DTV allows me (with the included extensions and re-entries) to its maximum. I'm a Digital Nomad, and was wondering if my type of situation has some chance of opening a bank account in Bangkok? Sure I can hop around and ask every branch, but if someone on DTV had success in some specific branches/banks, I'd like to know.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The main concern of the poster is about opening a bank account in Bangkok while holding a Digital Tourist Visa (DTV). Comments indicate that banks generally do not prefer opening accounts for tourists. However, there are reports of specific branches, like TTB, starting to accept DTVs for account openings under certain conditions. Alternatively, community members suggest hiring an agent to facilitate the process for a fee, which has been a common workaround.

I know only two types of people who always make sure everyone knows what they are when posting: Americans and 'digital nomads'. Both just love how it sounds I guess

TTB branches in Bangkok have started accepting DTV visas as a basis for opening bank accounts. Here are the requirements:

The DTV is a tourist visa, and banks don't generally want to open bank accounts for tourists in Thailand.

You can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by finding an agent to facilitate obtaining a bank account for 4-5,000 baht.

in Bangkok 4k? I asked my landlord and she said agents take up to 50k. Cheaper for some nationalities. I already have an account from before retirement but it’s a long trip to isaan just to change my passport number in their computer. Bangkok is at the exit of my condo 😂

50k what it costs to get a visa and a bank account, and that's an expensive agent at that. It can be gotten for like 20-30k normally for the visa included. A bank account shouldn't be more than 5k

she knows that I already have a visa. I tried all banks within a 1km radius. Ktb wanted to help me but it was a buddha day so they couldn’t. Seems like after years I still have not enough connections 😂 maybe I’ll try again sometime. Thanks for the price estimate 🙏

according the the LA consulate it’s a Non immigrant visa

The LA consulate does not write laws. The Royal Gazette which is where the visa was published and put into law, specifically calls it a tourist visa.
