My husband went to three banks today in Chiang Mai trying to open a bank account with his DTV. All saying they couldn’t do it. Anyone have success opening a bank account recently?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expatriates with a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) are facing challenges in opening bank accounts in Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai. It has been reported that certain banks, like TTB in Central Airport and Bangkok Bank, have specific requirements including a passport, DTV visa, lease agreement, proof of residence, ID copies, and in some cases, a Thai driver's license and proof of work or education. Experiences vary; some individuals succeeded while others encountered difficulties due to the non-resident status associated with the DTV visa.
I want to ask if we cannot open bank account. Then how are we eligible for tax if we stay more then 180 days in thailand. As we don't remit any money into thailand account?
I’m pretty sure it’s free to set up an account as long as you put money in it. I don’t remember being charged anything so even if they did charge me it was a very small amount..

Try Bangkok Bank Soi Buakhao branch. The requirements were just a Thai sim under your name plus buy a 1-year insurance from the bank (5000 baht). The other branches at Beach Road & Jomtian reject foreigners without work permits or long term visa.
Yes, an insurance policy by the bank and they allowed me, on a 30 days tourist visa , to open an account if I buy the policy. There are agents that can open an account for a fee higher than that.
You have to pay If you don't match the requirments... At least you will buy a insurance or something ...so your Bank Account coast you 10K-20K. It only pays off after 70 withdrawals, if you pay around 15K or 45 withdrawals at a price of 10K. It's not worth it for me. Of course, it could also be that you are one of those strange influencers who tell people that they should emigrate to Thailand and all that

crap. So that you can tell your friends at home that you are living in Thailand with a TR visa or a DTV visa. 😂🤣😂

Anonymous participant 401 to not get dinged 220 baht every time taking cash out from ATM. Being able to not touch dirty and contaminated cash/coins, stay cashless most of the time.
A modern person would want this, unless dealing with some cash business and got pile of cash sitting around.
Not just that, but most banks will charge you a withdrawal fee on their end (AUD / CHF / USD/ EUR 5) usually and a percentage charge of up to 3-3.5% of the amount withdrawn.
Only a small handful of banks refund these charges.
Thus withdrawing money from a Thai ATM can be very costly using a foreign card.

Participante anónimo 401 it's not about not needing it, but some people want one, so why not? (personally I don't need it, and I don't have any).

where do you live and in which places do you spend money that you have to have QR code pmt option? I was in bkk for a month, never really had a problem at food courts, restaurants, shops etc. Used my credit card most of the time. Now in pattaya, same thing

Paying rent, purchasing a vehicle, convenience of every day spending, the list really goes on. If I want to buy a car for 200,000 baht, should I get cash out of cash out of the ATM 10 times over 10 days and pay 2200 baht and have a huge liability carrying that much cash? Many dealerships charge 3% on visa/mastercard transfers. Should I pay 6,000 baht extra? Just because you didn’t need a Thai bank account for a month stay, doesn’t mean other people don’t.

Participante anónimo 401 in convenience stores the minium amount to use credit card is 200 baht, in some restaurant 500 baht. The QR code comes handy when you need to pay only a water bottle or a pack of mangoes. It can be used also for the BTS and MTR.

Anonymous participant 401 Thai ATMs charge an access fee. International transfer to Thai bank is cheaper.
Bc the logic is to save money on atm fees but 24 percent your wages is a lot more lol. You don’t need to pay taxes on the DTV income outside of Thailand only
If you import it there or paid there or use their banking system.

I’ve been going around Chiang Mai also. Only bank that gave me list of requirements was TTB Central Airport. They want
any ideas as to why the Thai driver's license is important? I don't drive and don't have a license in any country. I wonder if they'd refuse me based solely on that.
it’s the same for me I don’t drive nor intend to drive, but TTB does require it. I tried to used my state ID from Australia, but they require a Thai drivers licence. It looks like someone at TTB headquarters just made that decision and that’s the requirement. I intend to just get a motorcycle licence to open the account as it doesn’t seem too tricky.
Pattaya agents used to charge 3500-5K and Bangkok was around 2-4 x that. I heard of being asked for 25K recently to open an account in Bangkok. You got a good deal.
