I will be applying for my second ED visa next month to continue studies at the same language school. Do I still need to cancel my extension of stay before travelling to Vientiane as I believe you require a letter stating from the school which date your studies will be ceasing on, well as I’m continuing my studies do I still have to do this? I’m guessing that I do because I will be obtaining a new visa and subsequently in the future a new extension of stay after 3 months. Just want to confirm the CORRECT way to do it, cheers.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a second ED visa to continue studies at the same school, you generally do not need to cancel your current extension of stay. In many cases, especially if you are studying at the same institution, you can directly obtain the new visa without cancelling the current one. However, there is some conflicting information, with some advising that cancellation is necessary before departing for a visa run. It's advisable to gather the necessary paperwork from your school confirming your continued studies.

actually IF you are studying at the SAME school this is one of the FEW cases where you do NOT need to cancel your current extension of stay based on education :O You just get the paperwork and go get a new ED visa from a thai consulate.

At least in Bangkok no one cancels their basic/intermediate ED visa extension when they leave the country to get a new ED visa for the advanced level thai classes.

Yes the Extension of Stay must be cancelled before you leave the country.
