ED visa when leaving Thailand

My son had a 1 year ED visa extension a while ago.

For different reasons, it happens that the extension was ending the 31st of May while the end of the school year is the 20th of June.

His school (an international school ) made a new letter. We went back the the immigration office and they extended again the visa until the 30 of June.

The question is... school is ending the 20th of June... we plan to leave Thailand to go to Cambodia (holidays) , request an SETV there to come back in thailand and wait for the new school year to apply for another ED visa.

Does he have to make the cancellation process before leaving thailand (planing on the 25th) even though the school already mentioned that school is ending the 20th but immigration gave until 30th?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquires about the necessity of canceling a one-year ED visa extension before leaving Thailand for Cambodia, noting that their son's current extension lasts until June 30, but school ends on June 20. Comments suggest that while it might not directly affect obtaining a new tourist or ED visa, officially canceling the extension through the immigration office is advisable to avoid potential issues.

this is what the stamp they give you when you c cancel an ED extension looks like;

on this example they had an extension that was valid until the 25th of July, they went in on the 22 of JUNE and canceled it with paperwork from the school stating they were stopping studying on the 6th of July.

This stamp canceled their ED extension and let them stay until the 6th of July.

, that is an extension of stay stamp and in theory at least you should go cancel it before you leave the country (although not canceling it will not affect you getting a tourist visa from a thai consulate or a new Non-ED visa)

There could be problems with the extension of stay on the new ED visa though because you never canceled this one.

I would say take a letter from the school stating the child stops studying on the date you're going to leave the country, have the immigration office cancel this extension and stamp them in until that date and then leave the country on that date <- that is how you officially cancel and extension of stay.

leaving on the date an extension runs out does NOT officially cancel an extension :/

you do what you want. I an just relating how it's done officially.
