Do I need to cancel my ED visa extension before leaving Thailand if I'm returning on a non-B visa?

Any idea if this needs cancelled or I can just leave without cancelling? On an ED visa which I’ve been extending every 60 days. Reason I ask is I’m coming back in on non-b and want to make sure it’s done correctly so no problems when applying for it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses whether it's necessary to cancel an ED visa extension before leaving Thailand, especially when planning to return on a non-B visa. Commenters indicate that while some sources claim cancellation isn't required, it is advisable to officially cancel the extension to avoid potential fines or issues with future visas. Obtaining a cancellation letter from the educational institution is recommended to ensure a clean slate with immigration authorities.

Not canceling it is not going to stop you from getting a visa from a thai consulate OR doing a border bounce to get a 30 day visa exempt entry (IF they let you out of the country because some borders won't let you bounce until you cancel your extension).

BUT it could cause you problems when you go to get a new extension later on.

I would say you're out nothing but time to do it the official way no matter what the school or the immigration officer you spoke to said. Get the letter from the school saying you're stopping studying on the date you're scheduled to leave the country, go to the immigration office and they'll cancel your current extension and stamp you in until that date.

Then the slate is clean and you've officially canceled your extension.

I would say it's your choice, and that you have enough information to make a decision one way or another.

Good Luck (y)

So the Muay Thai gym said this ED visa doesn’t need cancelled and also when I got my last 60 days extension the officer at immigration said it doesn’t need cancelled.

However all the comments on here suggest it does. Anyone shed any light?

Yes, you must cancel your “extension of stay” last granted to you. If you don’t, you can return on a new Visa BUT when you go to extend or report again, they will see your previous extension of stay not cancelled and you will be fined for overstay, up to 20,000 Baht.

Simply ask your school for a letter to cancel the extension of stay, date the cancellation for the day you intend to leave Thailand, and take it to immigration to cancel BEFORE you leave.

Vinny Rodham your mate will need to go to immigration immediately upon his return to cancel the extension to avoid large fine - he may be lucky like me, and get no fine (I did mine on return within 24 hours)

The same applies to non-B extensions. They need to be canceled.

Is that for all extensions? Does it make a difference what type of ED visa, as in not to study at university but for Muay Thai?

My mate is on the same visa (also expires 16th July) and he left the country to come in on 30 days visa exempt yesterday. Will he have problems when he tries to extend another 30 days?

I think you do yes. I had to go & cancel my last ED visa at Changwattana before leaving.
